The Washington National Cathedral bishop criticized the new president as he just sat there and watched.
Summary
Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Episcopal bishop at the Washington National Cathedral, directly confronted Donald Trump during his inaugural prayer service, urging him to show compassion for marginalized groups.
She criticized his policies on LGBTQ rights, mass deportations, and immigration, calling for mercy toward undocumented immigrants and children fearing family separation.
Trump dismissed the sermon as "not too exciting," while his supporters condemned Budde’s remarks as inappropriate.
Budde’s bold address marked the first public challenge to Trump’s agenda during his second term.
They are exactly appropriate. When the Reverend is calling you out, you're supposed to fucking listen. These dudes are all about hierarchies and traditions until it doesnt suit them.
How do we reconcile that with Trump's ambassador arguing that Israel has a "biblical right" to the West Bank? There's no consistency of principle here, except for the principle of "whatever suits us".
He didn't say the service was "not so exciting". He said "I didn't think it was a good service, no" and "they could do much better" (source).
I know it's not a huge deal, but I'm fucking tired of the media misreporting and softening his statements.
And of course he went further on his social media:
The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart. She failed to mention the large number of illegal migrants that came into our Country and killed people. Many were deposited from jails and mental institutions. It is a giant crime wave that is taking place in the USA. Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one. She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology! t
Trump supporters are pissed and saying this bishop was giving Trump a “cnn or the view “ type lecture.
I wonder what they think of that Jesus dude who said similar stuff. I wonder if they’ve heard of him. They’d probably roast him as a liberal beta
Jesus was just a weird hippie wandering around telling people to be nicer, until he messed with the rich folks’ money and promptly got nailed to a tree. He probably already has come back and got shot at the border while seeking asylum.
Matthew 25:40 and all that, not that most Christian’s have actually read the book.
I used to be Christian. Reading it again later as an adult, my overall takeaway of the stories was that there was this guy with divine knowledge walking around constantly being disappointed with the state of humanity and a hair up his ass about it. I suppose it wouldn’t be any different today, were the same entity to come back, for some fucking reason.
Oh, poor donvict. I bet this will really roast him as he leads the charge on rolling back rights and filling up his coffers with all the grifting and the stealing.
We need more people to say stuff like this. Trump's entire stick is controlling the narrative and getting everyone to bend the knee so they say nice stuff about him. Any attempt at a counter narrative, no matter how mild mannered is a threat to his narrative and control over the discourse.
His social media response is damage control. We'll be in a better place if we start talking about how immigrants are great and trans people want to be ourselves. Talking about how we would all have more money if we taxed billionaires would help to. The fact billionaires remove wealth from the economy by never paying taxes, never paying wages, and price gouging us all at the grocery stores.
Different denominations have different views. The Episcopal Church if the USA is very progressive in its current form. Two presiding bishops ago there was a woman in charge.
