  • July 2023: What Board Games are You Playing?
  • we had a quick family camping trip. so some small games in the downtime.

Survive!: Escape from Atlantis, is always a blast. I actually won, since the two older kids were so intent on killing each other's people rather than hunting down dad's.

Magical Athlete - my copy is worn and well loved, but it's never leaving. We had a race with the druid (moves whenever someone uses a special ability) and the Ranger (move 4 when rolls a 1 or 2...so almost always at least a 4). The entire race the ranger never used his ability.

I live in a town of 5k, so I'm sure it's the same.

Picked this up yesterday at my local BG store!
  • Nice. I have a 1st Edition copy that comes out about once a year. It's an event to play it, but worth the effort. I recently 3d-printed a Mt. Doom miniature to use with it.

What Board Games have you Played Recently? - June 2023

on another site we had a thread that was simply to discuss what you've played recently and any general thoughts on those games. Thought I might kick it off here.

Suggestions of coop games to play with kids 10 & 12?
  • any other games they do like? what works for one 12 year old won't for another.

Menara - cooperative dexterity game, where you building towers Legendary - Marvel Superhero deckbuilding . "Semi" coop, but if you tweak the difficulty, the focus is on coop Flashpoint:Fire Rescue - Firemen. rescue people, fight fires.
Pandemic/Forbidden Island - this is the 'classic' coop. it's a little puzzly for my tastes, but it's popular.
D&D Adventure Games - Wrath of Ashardalon, Castle Ravenloft. alittle older, but scratches a coop dungeon crawler itch.

my son (11) really enjoys Aeon's End and Spirit Island.

  • Day 3: Best Dexterity game - Menara
  • Menara is what we graduated to after Rhino Hero Super Battle. It's always impressive to see on yhr table.

Have you looked at the expansion at all?

  • Day 3: Best Dexterity game - Menara
  • We moved to Menara after Rhino Hero Super battle. It's significantly harder, but it shouldn't be to difficult to tweak it if needed

  • Do you colour your miniatures?
  • As an alternative, I've been 3d printing bases to differentiate plastic miniatures. Similar to the bases in something like Argent or Blood Rage.

Obviously not as pretty as painted minis, but significantly easier to play with

  • Will lemmy.world be defederating from beehaw.org now?
  • No, it's how I said it. I just checked - there are a couple posts from Ruud's beehaw account over there discussing it. If you visit the conversation with an account not from lemmy.world, there are a number of posts that show up that we can't see.

  • Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators From Subreddits Continuing Apollo-Related Blackouts - MacRumors
  • power users and mods leaving. The big key is how moderation continues on reddit. whether the scab mods and those that stayed are able to control the bots and spam or not. if they can, then reddit continues mostly as normal.

  • Will lemmy.world be defederating from beehaw.org now?
  • I didn't think this made the beehaw stuff read only. I thought we got a snapshot from the moment they defederated, and it doesn't update after that. .world users can comment, but that's only on the snapshot that .world is storing. as time goes on it veers further and further from the 'real' content stored on beehaw.

  • Undaunted:Normandy with my 15yo son
  • My son is 12, and hasn't expressed any interest in Undaunted. But he really enjoys Aeon's End and Warhammer Invasion. WH:I is going to hard to find. Aeon's End is a co-op deckbuilder, that's pretty thinky and really leans into the coop aspect of things.

  • Mint imperium - the space game in a metal mint box
  • I have it sitting on my kitchen table. I've punched and organized since it came, but I haven't played yet.

I've seen the complaint about the rules a couple times now. That it really assumes you've played Star Wars Rebellion, if you haven't the rules aren't quite thorough enough

  • Best Coop Boardgames?
  • I've played a lot of Betrayal. I play tested it at AvalonCon back while I was in high school.

It's very random, and has the potential for some really great games and some real duds. I know in the later editions there have been efforts made to tighten up the scenario balance, do maybe things are better. But From my experience, maybe 1 in 3 games has been 'good', 1 just meh, and the last a steamroller for one side. So many of the scenarios depend on thr size of the house, with too large or too small of a house making it unbalanced. Or specific items being useless or over powered. And many of the scenarios have pretty loose rules.

As long as you understand that, it's a fairly light game that can have a decently large group working together.

I've enjoyed my copy, but there was a stretch where it was OOP and going for big money. It wasn't worth that, but for a regular in-print price, it's fine.

  • What phone are you using?
  • Another S20FE here. I've had new phone fever recently, but I keep having to ask myself....what exactly am I going to gain from spending almost a grand on a new S23.

  • Just getting into retro emulation. What are your favorite titles to play?
  • There are exceptions, but for most games, given a choice between SNES and GBA versions, the SNES one is better. Usually sound is severely compressed on the GBA and the visuals are washed out.

  • Lemmy.world starting guide
  • as long as the instances are federated, you can interact with communities on other instances. There's alittle extra effort needed to subscribe to a community on another instance, but it's not difficult.

it does mean that you are subject to the uptime of whatever server the community is on. So things like Lemmy.ml that are having difficulties right now affect more than just the users on that instance.

  • Filament Dryers

So tried out some PETG for the first time, and the first couple prints went really well. but I believe it's picked up quite a bit of moisture, sitting in the basement.

What's the current recommendation for a filament dryer? there was one on /r/3dprintingdeals a bit back, a Sunlu S2. is the S1 good enough, or should someone who's fairly recreational with everything spring for a S2? I see food dehydrators recommended sometimes, is there anything specific to look for in one?
