Do you go through any physical measures to ensure the privacy of your devices?
  • I'm sure you're already aware, but the framework laptop includes toggles for mic and camera. I'm a big fan of the laptops in general because of the upgradability and ease of repair.

  • Notes taking app
  • I've been using Carnet for note-taking, which is a nextcloud plugin. It has been a great replacement for Google keep, but it's really buggy. How has your experience with Nextcloud Notes been?

  • Shortcut to go to `YOUR instance` from `ANY Sublemmy`
  • Hey, thank you for this, I had been wanting something along these lines. I have a personal instance, and this will let me import more communities for myself. I just tried it and it works a treat. Takes it a couple of seconds if the community is not yet in my "All" list, but it totally finds it and then I can subscribe or just let it be. Thanks!

  • Yeah, I'm hoping it will clear up with time as other commenters have suggested!

  • Thank you for the input, I'll keep an eye on it and hope it fixes itself with time.

  • Thank you, I'll keep an eye on it and hopefully it will slowly fix itself as well

  • My wife can't eat onion, beans or garlic. What are some of your favorite recipes without them?
  • I'm sorry it's not a recipe, but a good ingredient to have in your cabinet is asafoetida, also known as hing. It is a powdered root used in Indian cuisine to impart a strong onion-y flavor. You could try adding it to curries or sauces to get some of that flavor back! It's very pungent, so it's a good idea to store it tightly

Sorting by hot includes very old posts

Hello all! I am posting from my own self hosted instance, running 0.18.0, but this issue existed in 0.17.4 as well. When sorting posts from my subscribed communities by Hot, I will get a handful of newer posts, followed by an entire page or two of old posts going as far back as 4 years (not with new comments), before finally seeing fresh posts again. Thus far I have been scrolling past all the ancient posts every time I open lemmy (both through Firefox and jerboa) and going straight to the fresh content, but since the issue wasn't resolved with the new release I'm wondering if anyone knows what is causing this behavior and if there is a fix. Thank you!

Self Hosted Lemmy instance comments terribly out of sync?
  • Yeah, people around here are super helpful! Sorry we don't have the same problem, hopefully someone else can give some insight!

  • Self Hosted Lemmy instance comments terribly out of sync?
  • I had a similar problem that ended up having to do with my server's language settings. I didn't realize you can select more than just "Undetermined" by holding down shift or ctrl. So everything tagged as English didn't appear until I went back and fixed it. You can read the whole odyssey here: https://lemmy.ml/post/1205767

  • Safer to host NPM on a VPS?
  • I've definitely heard bad things about Oracle deleting people's machines without warning. Unfortunately I don't know anything about Ionos. I may go with Linode, their cheapest VPS at $5/month has a 1TB transfer limit, which I might stay under. But please let me know if you end up finding a decent option from a reliable company!

  • Safer to host NPM on a VPS?
  • I've definitely thought about it, and I would if it were just me. I share some services with family and I don't want to be responsible for troubleshooting if they accidentally uninstall tailscale or reset their phones

  • Safer to host NPM on a VPS?
  • For sure, I think Oracle has unlimited bandwidth even in it's free tier. Ionos is one that I was looking at, fairly cheap but also offers unlimited transfer

  • Safer to host NPM on a VPS?
  • Thank you for explaining and for the examples, it's definitely time to start learning caddy. I liked npm for the simple gui, but security and reliability are more important

  • Safer to host NPM on a VPS?
  • Are you sure it's abandoned? The docker page was last updated three days ago and there is activity on the github page. Are they just updating the software without pushing any security fixes? I've definitely not had issues renewing certificates

  • Safer to host NPM on a VPS?
  • Thank you! It does seem like there are afforadable VPS options that don't limit traffic anyway, so I might as well start there.

Will Authelia break federation for my lemmy instance?

Basically what the title says. I'm assuming the answer is yes, because I would be able to fetch data but no other server would be able to fetch anything from me. So maybe I could browse other instances but not comment or post in any of them? Thanks!

Safer to host NPM on a VPS?
  • Thank you! I have a followup question if you don't mind. If I host npm on a vps that allows me, say 500GB of data transfer a month, and I am streaming media through a jellyfin instance that I have forwarded through the VPS, will the media I'm streaming count against that transfer amount? This seems like basic information that I should have learned a long time ago.

  • Safer to host NPM on a VPS?

Greetings! I currently host a number of services on an old pc in my basement. I have ports 80 and 443 forwarded and am running Nginx Proxy Manager as well as Authelia to protect most of them. I have set up a lemmy instance that I am using as my main point of access to the fediverse. I guess I have two questions. I am assuming that hiding lemmy behind Authelia would break Federation (although maybe only one way?), is that correct? And secondly, would it be objectively safer for me to pay for a VPS, run Nginx Proxy Manager there and then forward all of the traffic to the services hosted in my basement server using Tailscale? Thanks!

  • [SOLVED]Self hosted docker instance not fetching new posts and comments
  • It seems like you can select everything in the admin panel, which is what I did. But only the languages that have actually appeared in your instance will show as options in the individual user settings, so I was only able to select Undetermined and English on my user. Anyway, the devs should format the language lists as checkboxes, that would have completely solved the issue since I would have known from the start that I could select multiple things. My browsing experience just got exponentially better!

  • [SOLVED]Self hosted docker instance not fetching new posts and comments
  • Damn, there it is. It was the language, actually the opposite of what you described. I logged out of my instance and magically all the posts appeared. Then I noticed that only posts without a language were appearing. I had undetermined selected as the server language in the admin panel, I didn't realize I could select more than one thing (and the warning about deselecting Undetermined had me thinking that only having undetermined selected would let me see everything). So, I turned on more languages in the admin panel and then selected English and Undetermined as the languages in my user account and voilá! Thank you for your help!

[SOLVED]Self hosted docker instance not fetching new posts and comments

Hey all, just wondering if I'm missing something or just have a fundamental misunderstanding of how federation works. I spun up a small docker instance for myself in order to interact with federated lemmy without bogging down the existing servers. I am noticing that although I am subscribed to a lot of communities, some of them don't seem to be updating. I know that my instance will only fetch new posts and comments from the communities I'm subscribed to, but even those are not being updated. Some communities seem to be working, but others just aren't updating. Is there a requirement that I'm not meeting to be able to fetch new data? Appreciate any ideas, thank you!

Edit: the problem was in the instance's language settings. It is not obvious, but you can, and should, select multiple languages in your instance's admin panel (at least Undetermined and your main language). I solved by selecting every language in the admin panel, and then selecting the relevant ones again from the individual user settings.
