Could any of the main characters of Prodigy have been affected by the Borg assimilation in Picard S3?

Could any of the main characters of Prodigy have been affected by the Borg assimilation in Picard S3?

Season 1 of Prodigy takes place in 2383. This means the main characters would be about 18 years older at the time of Season 3 of Picard.

When the Borg assimilate the younger members of Starfleet, using "recievers" added to their genetic code through the transporter system, it's said to only affect individuals prior to a certain point in their brain development - around 25 for humans.

The characters' ages in 2383 are:

  • Dal: 17
  • Gwyn: 17
  • Jankom: 16
  • Rok: 8

No age is listed on Memory Alpha for Zero, but they're also Medusan, have already broken free from the Borg once, and I don't know if Medusans even have genetic material that the transporter could detect. (Also, Murf's age is explicitly said to be unknown.)

In 2401, Rok would be about 26 (not including the time spent in the slowdown in "Time Amok"). For her to be affected by the Borg assimilation, I think we'd have to make a few assumptions:

  1. She's still in Starfleet
  2. Either her brain development takes slightly longer than in humans, or the estimates are off and she's a bit younger than 26
  3. The algorithms in Starfleet transporters that recognize common species DNA (which is what the Borg code hijacked to install the receiver) specifically recognizes Brikar like it does for other, more commonly seen species

Number 1 seems likely. Number 3 seems plausible - Rok wore an appropriately-sized environmental suit in (I believe) "Crossroads", although that was likely created by a replicator - perhaps the vehicle replicator, if the ordinary ones weren't large enough.

To me, number 2 seems the most unlikely; Prodigy a show aimed (in part) at teenagers, and - in the absence of any reference to these species differences in the show - it seems logical to me to assume these characters are intended to be at similar state in development as humans of the same age. And the estimate for Rok's age seems to put her just over the age where she would be affected. Part of me wonders if the writers for "Võx" were thinking about this.

Anything I missed (at least prior to Prodigy season 2)? Or any other characters we've seen who might be young enough to be assimilated in 2401?

A list of casual communities on Lemmy (that aren't just tech news or politics)

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/2216085

---

Searching Lemmyverse is good for finding communities. !trendingcommunities@feddit.nl is also a nice tool for finding new places.

I posted this on the other site but I thought I'd copy over here too, lots of good communities around to subscribe to if you want a more casual/fun frontpage that isn't just tech news, elon musk, or politics.

note: all of these communities have posts. If they appear empty, it simply means nobody on the instance you use has visited them before (or you might have blocked them and forgot, I've done it before, lol)! I will try to keep this thread updated over time.

Note: if you wish to auto-subscribe to all of the communities below, I have a post in the comments that describes how to do so.

--- My rough criterion was:

  • Of interest to me or a wide audience
  • Has a decent amount of activity
  • Casual / fun / interesting / cool / funny / chatty communities.
  • 0 negativity/negative vibes, news, politics, overload of tech or niche tech news/info, etc.

A list of casual communities on Lemmy (that aren't just tech news or politics)

@daystrominstitute@startrek.website What can we know (or at least guess) about Tellarite culture and behavior from Jankom Pog?

This is going to be pretty open-ended, but I'm curious: given that Jankom is the only Tellarite main cast member of any Star Trek series, what might his personality, behavior, relationships (etc.) tell us about Tellarites as a whole, or their relationships with other species within or outside the Federation? Obviously, it's not easy to know much from Jankom in particular (given that he's a kid and grew up among pre-Federation Tellarites), but thematically, I think it would be nice if one could draw some lines (even if it's wild speculation) between his his role in the team, and the fact that the Tellarites we see in ENT not only help found the Federation, but never leave it, even after the Burn (IMO, one of the most fascinating bits of worldbuilding that's ever been dropped in an off-screen monologue).

For instance I know i can navigate to https://lemmy.ml/c/daystrominstitute@startrek.website to see the "daystrominstitute" community at startrek.website, but is there a way where I can see all (or even just the most popular) communites at startrek.website, while still logged into my lemmy.ml instance (so i can just hit the subscribe button if i want to join)?

new startrek lemmy communities

There is a new lemmy instance at startrek.website where people from /r/daystrominstitute and /r/risa are migrating. The communities currently there are:

I'm posting this here on !startrek@lemmy.ml because, with >500 subscribers, it is/was the largest startrek community on lemmy by subscriber count prior to the presently ongoing influx of new users from rexxit.

You can hopefully click the relative links above to access these communities through whatever instance you're reading this on; if you get a 404 then you'll need to go to startrek.website and copypaste the link to each community into the search box on your home instance to cause it to federate them.

Sadly startrek.website is already blocking federation with lemmygrad, home of what has historically been imo the best (and largest by number of posts) trek-related lemmy community !startrek@lemmygrad.ml (here is an absolute link, so people reading this from instances that block lemmygrad can see it). I hope the startrek.website admins will reconsider this block!

edit: here are some other lemmy-or-federated startrek communities from the comments here, and elsewhere:

/c/StarTrek@lemmy.world is under refreshed management
  • Creator or Daystrom here: the conditions that created Daystrom eleven years ago don't exist on Lemmy. More simply, Lemmy isn't big enough to host a new Daystrom.

I made Daystrom because /r/startrek was so full of memes and jokes that it was increasingly difficult to have an actual discussion about Trek. Discussion posts were drowned out between low-effort posts like memes and jokes and even if you did get a discussion prompt to garner some votes, the thread itself would have a bunch of jokes at the top, because jokes are easy to upvote. If you wanted actual discussion, you had to go hunt for it.

On Lemmy, the meme subreddits have already taken off and so it's unlikely that StarTrek@lemmy.world is going to be flooded with memes. StarTrek@lemmy.world is so small that if you posted a discussion prompt right now, it would very likely be the top post in the community for the next 24 hours.

Now of course, there's no guarantee that if you posted a discussion prompt in StarTrek@lemmy.world, the answers won't be jokes and dismissive replies. For whatever reason, Trekkies love to respond with comments like "the real answer is 'don't think about it!'" which is mildly rude, honestly: if someone makes a thread about it, obviously they would like to think about it. But, outside of the very largest communities on Lemmy, there is so little comment activity that it's easy enough to sift through the replies and discuss with people who would like to discuss.

One could make a community that enforces Daystrom's two key rules: only discussion prompts allowed, and no memes/jokes/dismissive comments. But daystrominstitute@startrek.website exists... and it's pretty much dead. Enforcing these rules in a place as small as Lemmy comes across as heavy-handed.

So, tl;dr if you want "Daystrom on Lemmy," I invite you to post discussion prompts to StarTrek@lemmy.world.

  • Dear Lemmy, **why** Star Trek??
  • Unfortunately, outside of the meme zone (i.e. !risa@startrek.website) there isn't a whole lot of engagement anymore. Once the blackout was over, the reddit communities opened back up.

    I mean, look at r/DaystromInstitute versus !DaystromInstitute@startrek.website – it's not pretty.

  • Possible headcanon reason why consoles always explode on the bridge
  • Over at Daystrom, this comes up from time to time. I've formed a head-canon for it as well. To quote one of my comments on a thread there regarding the explosions (and the "rocks"):

My understanding is that the "rocks" are a product of the electroplasma system being exposed to air. Whether that is some sort of coolant that is meant to seal the EPS leak in that console or some sort of EPS byproduct reacting in air, I don't remember or have a head-canon for it.

All of that said, if I form this reply into one worthy of Daystrom, then I say it is an intended safety mechanism to protect the crew against catastrophic failure of the EPS conduits.

So, the consoles are exploding from the failure of the EPS conduits and the expansion of the coolant.

  • Can I view a list of the communities of a lemmy instance while logged into my own?
  • Yes, you could just go to https://startrek.website/communities for the list of communities on that particular instance.
However, subscribing to a community on an instance where you do not have an account takes a few extra steps.

When looking at the list of communities on another instance where you do not have an account, clicking the Subscribe link from the list will result in a popup stating that you're not logged in and if you click on the community name, a Subscribe button will not be shown.
However, most, if not all, communities will have instructions in the sidebar for how to subscribe from your main instance without the need for creating an account on the instance where that community resides.

To do this using the example of the startrek.website instance, if you wish to subscribe to the daystrominstitute community, you would enter "!daystrominstitute@startrek.website" into the search field on your main Lemmy instance where you are logged in.
Generally the first item in the results will be a link back to that community, which will look like:
    "Daystrom Institute@startrek.website - 448 subscribers"
Click that link and you will see the content of that community again, but now notice that a Subscribe button will be shown in the sidebar.
Clicking Subscribe may result in a note that says "Subscribe pending", which I believe is due to some syncing that needs to occur between instances. Just give it a few minutes and then that community will appear in your list of subscribed communities.
You can now read, post and reply to that community just as if you had an account on that instance.

  • Which communities are you currently missing on Lemmy?
  • Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using an URL instead of its name, which doesn't work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !daystrominstitute@startrek.website

  • Sub Rehab - See where reddit communities have relocated to
  • Okay so, i'm viewing this from a kbin instance. I clicked through to the link, found a community i'd like to join, but can't figure out how.

    !daystrominstitute

It's (i think) a Lemmy instance. I can't figure out where to paste the above in order to follow it. I tried the search in my instance here and it came back "empty", which I don't know if that means that they're not federated together, if this is a temporary "the servers are getting hammered" situation, or if i'm doing something wrong. Can anyone help?
