Hi, Connect 1.0.59 brings a new profile page, improvements to how routes are handled within the app, and a host of new settings. I hope you like it!
I'm still thinking about what a 'new to Lemmy' onboarding might look like. Also I know some people reported issues with the markdown editor yesterday, if this version still have issues please add a comment and I'll try and sort them out today!
What's new
Community name and user name are now direct links, with a setting to disable it.
Added a quick link to the official community within the app
Added confirmation on exit app
Added swiping on the left edge of home will open the drawer.
The drawer navigation actions should be more responsive now
Added an option to adjust how nested comments look. Also I added a couple presets within Settings to change it. I hope you like the presets I've chosen.
Added some improvements to the profile page. Tabs for overall/posts/comments and a page header
Added some haptic feedback for swipe actions
Bugfixes
Fixed comment cards in the reply view are no longer clickable
Fixed a three dot menu being invisible (web)
Fixed some routing issues when creating a comment or editting a comment. Instead of the previous state being in history it should now show only the state after the change.
Also please let me know what you think of the colour palettes I've chosen for the comment lines. If you're thinking of one that would be cool I'm happy to add it in :)
The best just got even better, thanks for everything!
Minor gripes:
the gesture "remembers" the farthest you go no matter when you actually leave your thumb. (ie if i want to upvote a post and I go a bit too far to the right on the bookmark gesture, and go back to the upvote icon without releasing the gesture, it bookmarks the post instead of upvoting it)
it would be nice if the downvote action was included in these gestures, for all the beans posts ;).
I still have the same issue on my tablet (also reported by @OneDimensionPrinter@lemm.ee) about not all subs showing up on the left tab. Everything is fine on my phone.
No joke, connect has become amazing in a very short span of time.
You've actually got more features available than jerboa, and the layout is so nice!
One bug though, did a search and the back arrow at the upper left doesn't work, nor does the back button on the navbar. No issues with scrolling so far on this version.
The new version no longer crashes on launch on my Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, so whatever you did fixed that. The scrolling speed is too slow with a mouse wheel in Samsung DeX though. App looks great otherwise and I'm looking forward to playing with it some more.
That might be related to https://lemmy.ca/post/862903 (@SpezCanLigmaBalls@lemmy.world I haven't forgotten this!) I don't have a good way of testing this currently but I did try increasing the scroll speed before but it made things kind of jumpy on normal touch scrolling.
Feature request please: Gesture swipe up or down on an image to dismiss it and return to post. Same for gifs/videos if you implement a built-in player at the some point.
Feature request 2: some border padding on images in community view. I enabled show 'Post titles Above Images' but without a border the title and post text look disconnected
Connect is feeling very good to use! Excellent work with this update, it's becoming my main Lemmy app. I love all of the new features and customization options.
I'm personally a big fan of the "Earthy" color pallete for comment lines.
The new fixed thumbnail height toggle doesn't actually seem to work for fullwidth despite it saying so
The area for me to tap to see the comments menu or hold to hide and unhide the comments seems to be only on areas where there is text and not the whole section. This makes it hard to interact with comments that are very short on text.
There don't seem to be clear card like dividers in card view mode between posts when using the AMOLED dark mode
Any chance you could support custom tabs? Using the open for anything that currently doesn't work leaves me in webview, which neither has my logins nor tge features I need from my browser.
Not really, that opens as a full link, not a custom tab. Custom tabs are basically like webview but open to other browsers that don't track you. They also include addons if your browser has any.
Further that option makes everything open externally, even images and links. I would like to only see the things replaced that currently open in system webview, like posts with (most types of) links, or the "open" button in various menus.
I can't read websites well without certain addons for example, so I am forced to tap the "open external" of the webview every time.
The keyword is "android custom tabs" or "chrome custom tabs" I think.
Hey there! I really appreciate the constant improvements the updates bring. Connect is the app I mainly use for lemmy now.
I'd like to request a feature. Could you add an option for title to be above media(image and videos) posts? It's what I was used to on the various third party reddit apps I used to use.
Just tried the apps available for Android, and Connect is clearly the friendliest and prettiest client. I know it's early days, but I think I'll be experiencing lemmy from here, at least until Sync comes out.
Request: I'm on team serif for comment font. Can we have font choices?
Hi Kuro, thanks for all your awesome work and the crazy rapid development. It's really paying off with how great the app is progressing!
Would you consider adding and option for an alternative cardview, similar to Relay, that has the author, community, post age and title in the header of the card followed by the image or content then in the footer it has the comment count, vote buttons and more options etc.
That order of information is conditioned into me after many years of Relay use 😂
One thing I really liked about RIF's comment view is that it had an explicit show/hide button for collapsing/expanding comment threads. The long press to collapse is okay but a bit annoying to use when you're trying to collapse lots of comments with a long nested thread with many branches. Any chance we could get a setting for an explicit button with this functionality?
That works, thanks. But the subscribed/local/all preference is stored in your profile settings on the Lemmy instance, shouldn't Connect follow that like the other apps?
A feature I would like is an option to open in external browser rather than only webview. If I want to share a link on at the moment it's quite difficult
The previous history being shown after editing a comment was particularly annoying. Glad you fixed that.
Oh and since it seems like you're working on the user experience side of things, I made a post here with some suggestions for you to consider regarding the app!
Deleted comments still appear, just with a "deleted" indicator next to them. I'm not sure if this is intentional or not, but if it is, then maybe there could at least be an option to not display the deleted comments?
Hello, I just heard about this app and tried it out. It's instantly become my favorite as being most similar to RIF of the ones I've tried. I figured posting feedback and bugs to the current release thread will keep things the most organized.
[Bug] Post titles do not display for me (Galaxy Fold 4) in open/closed mode. I've tried toggling through the various themes and post view styles with no luck.
[Request] When clicking on a comment, it expands to display ways to interact with it. If you click on another comment, the options for the previous comment remain visible. The "ActiveComment" should be the only one with visible options to conserve screen space.
Hi, thanks for the feedback! If you change the 'Font type for posts' or 'Post Titles above Images' setting does that have any affect? Just trying to narrow down what might be causing the issue.
Finally got the update. Some great improvements in there! Had to reconfigure my settings, but that only took about 30 seconds.
The swipe to open side menu does seem a bit glitchy, however.
It seems to open the side menu at the same time you swipe back to your home screen. Unfortunately, I just have to immediately clear it away to see my home screen.
Once you're actually on your home screen (which is where you'd expect it to work), swiping doesn't do anything.
Of note, I'm talking about the swipe action to the right from essentially anywhere on the screen. If there's a separate action I'm missing from the extreme left edge, that being overridden by Android's own built-in back gesture.
EDIT: Oops. My bad. The Android extreme edge swipe does open the menu from the home view. I'd just not been using it in favor of the swipe from anywhere.
