how do instance bans work?

So I realized that lemmygrad must be banned in beehaw's instance list, but I can still see beehaw user comments in lemmy.ml communities, if I respond to them can they see my comment?

Also, is there a way to see all the instances which have banned lemmygrad?

- I think you have to go to individual instances to see who's been blocked
  
  seems really weird, if I leave a reply to someone and dont get a response I have to go through the effort of going to their instance and checking the ban list, seems like an issue that should be fixed idk
