It's not a bad way to create a barrier to griefers. Nintendo's market is mainly children, and they don't want random assholes creating accounts to troll kids.
- and maybe those so called children should learn digital safety.

Kind of annoying, but it was locked behind a subscription paywall anyway, so not a big leap.

I'm all the way out on subscribing, so already not a feature I planned to use.
If Nintendo calls me, we’re gonna have words about that Wii Zelda game.
