Yes it is, but because Americans will be broke and unable to buy things, it will hurt suppliers and their host countries too. As in "we're not gonna buy your stuff until you do what we want".
The situation for Australia is just plain nutty. Trump wants us to start importing American beef, and undo our federal pharmaceutical procurement thing, or endure a 10% tariff.
The thing is we don't export much to the US and there are other markets for our products. Also, we are pretty happy not having a US style health system thanks.
you think companies will just use a flat amount to cover the 'tariff'? fat chance. this is america, they're gonna keep their percent-based margins, probably add to them, besides, to offset lower sales volumes.. and those profit margins get added at every link in the distribution chain. retail prices will be closer to double than 'only' 54% more.
To be honest: nothing dramatic will happen. You'll just start buying less useless "stuff". Start paying more attention to quality, because you can't afford to replace broken useful stuff.
The era of excessive consumerism is over. It is more good than bad, actually.
