And don't forget, knowing how to use your weapons is more important than just having them. Yes an amateur with a weapon is still dangerous, but someome who knows how to use a tool is far more effective than someone who doesn't know how.
And if you know someone with a few different kinds practice with theirs before you buy your own. The last thing you want to do is get something you can't handle/use and have it gather dust.
And stick to common calibers, trust me. You want to be able to get ammo basically anywhere without issue.

You'll note the author of that piece, even when trying to be rational and self effacing, just slobbers all over boots as he does it. I'm not going to hold it against a guy who gets it just enough to recognize something that's toxic and dangerous when he sees it, but that's also very typically the kind of guy I see at my range and they most definitely do not get it.
