This used to be treated as an STI by gynecologists a few decades ago in the USA when it was recurrent. Then they stopped doing that and women had a horrible time. They literally had to refuse their partners sex*unless and until they got treated, and so the doctor needed to hear was "it keeps coming back after we have sex" to write the script.

I'm just kinda surprised this is new news, I know people that were getting this kind of treatment a few years ago.
I guess it was just doctors that had heard about it and were doing it independently rather than it being a widespread practice.
