A FAIR study of US newspapers found the overwhelming majority of times the vague term “identity politics” was mentioned, it was referring to Democrats and the left.
It's not really ironic that the right uses identity politics, and therefore the rich right leaning newspaper owners use identity politics to make the left look like people only support them because they identify as Democrats.
I'm agreeing with the article, using an example to reiterate the article's central message that there's a discrepancy between how the term is usually directed vs reality.
