I think that all sounds very reasonable. My only quibble is that it should be affects and affecting Melbourne.

Clarifying the gif part are you saying no gif or to write a description before adding one? I don’t usually do gif unless it’s a pm to a friend, but just trying to understand that part when I read it, due to it can affect some people with its nature
- I feel like (though I'm not Raven so I could be wrong) that it's more so adding alt text to an image. It's helpful for those who are blind/hard of seeing, or even those with shitty Internet to describe the image/gif. I don't think there is a way to pause moving images here on lemmy/aussie.zone which is disappointing, but I feel like keep gifs to a minimum.
  I would recommend just linking it with an alt text accompanied for those who might not want to view it but still want to understand what you're conveying.
- I believe it's no gif unless you absolutely have to. Gifs could take a long time to load and it could be rather visually stimulating.

I'm pretty happy with everything here. I think that, my major concerns are just trolls and such. Since what I remember of the DT was a lot of really welcoming folks (even now here while I stopped being active in the DT it feels like this place is safe... a safe space as one would say), but when it came to posts on the subreddit at large there were just some horrible and mean people, especially when it came to threads about the current climate/the American culture war they're trying to bring here.
Obviously, everyone has a right to their opinion, just as I do. But a lot of those would get ugly, luckily they'd be pretty downvoted quick. But other than that, it's a pretty simple rule list that makes sense. And I'm sure you folks on the admin team will edit the rules with enough warning if something comes up!
- Agreed. I remember the first time i was on the melbourne sub like 6 years ago and the users were evil, ive blocked them till this day. Only came back during lockdowns and found dt was a much more decent, totally diff kettle of fish

If anyone remembers all my long rants in the Reddit DT, I have some kinda good news about it.

Things at the hosue have been much more settled, it appears one of them (the main noisy one) will be moving out and back in with his family. He hasn't been here in about a month and a half, so things have been more chill. One of the others is just going about her life as usual. She tells and throws things once every day or two still, but not as bad as it was. And then the other one is still chill, he's never caused many problems

And on the lead tenant thing I mentioned a while ago, it seems things are going well. They lined up a house that sounds chill and I had my first meeting with the program coordinator on Tuesday. She gave me a rulebook I need to read, and then this coming Friday we meet with her again and I officially sign the papers. After that, it will be about 4-8 weeks until I move in.

It's still stressing me out a bit, mainly because I don't fit one of their requirements properly and I'm only about half fulfilling it. Allegedly they'll be pretty lenient on it, but lenient as in they'll accept me, but if I don't 100% meet it within a few months, I'll be locked back and sent back into Resi.

It's also kind of fucking with my head because I've been here for 4 years, and although I've never considered it to be, or felt that it is my home, that's the longest I've ever lived anywhere in my entire life. For about 3/4 of those years it's been pretty bleak living here and felt like a never ending nightmare, but now that it is ending and comparitively the end is so close I can basically touch it, it feels is backwards to what I'm used to

I've only just got here but Bright and the drive in is very pretty. Totally guessed the motel wifi password like a hardcore hacker because they didn't give it to me and there's nothing in the room about it.

Now that I'm settled it's time to go for a look around. I friggin love alpine regions/mountains.

Instead of doing anything constructive I have been reading about the Aboriginal stories about Raven (AKA Crow). Known as Waa to the Wurundjeri People. Waa was originally a white bird, who stole coals/fire from seven sisters who were keeping it to themselves. He either dropped some or ended up throwing it at other animals who were wanting to have some too, which is how fire came to be used by mankind. In the process Waa started a bushfire in which he was burned, which is how he became black.

I love my job but they cut my hours, so I went job hunting. First interview and they offered me the job which is 30k more than I am currently getting. They want me to start in 3 weeks but I’m so scared I’ll quit my current job and then hate my new one and never get to go back.

Has anyone has a situation where they got the job and ended up hating it

$30k extra will buy you a lot of time off to yourself if you decide it's not the job for you.

it does happen, but no job is permanent and if you absolutely hate it you can get another one. 30k is a lifestyle upgrade amount of money, and/or a lot of savings. however, no amount is worth a job that sucks. did you get a bad vibe in the interview or is it just the unknown? also can you negotiate with current job?
Just a friendly reminder that no one but you has your best interests at heart! Even if the new job sucks well you just proved your worth a lot more than you thought and established a precedent that you can in fact find another job!

I've always ALWAYS had "buyers remorse" when starting a new job but I think it's just anxiety of something new and unfamiliar. Once I've settled in it's always been fine. Just keep remembering why you left in the first place.

Went to the zoo, it was bloody windy! I feel like most of the animals were like yeah nah! All of the reptiles and snakes were out and about though, which is pretty rare!

I love the zoo! Even just walking through the gardens feels like an escape.

Good day for laundry - wind and sun. It's also hard rubbish weekend in Darebin, so I'll be looking out for large plant pots and mesh to cover the fence in the courtyard. Let the curb crawling commence (after breakfast). Reduce, reuse, recycle!

I'd be a bit worries about the laundry blowing away. With some of the gusts out there the hard rubbish might blow away too!
I do love a good hard rubbish crawl. We have on demand pickups here, so don't get the concentrated collections anymore.
- Trees are definitely thrashing their branches around here. My consolation is that the laundry will dry very fast today. Hard rubbish day is lots of fun I reckon. It's remarkable the number of items that keep appearing only in front of different houses each year.
Oh I came across the BEST pot in someone’s hard rubbish on my morning walk this week. It was too heavy to carry so I was gonna swing by in my car to grab it. But I walked past it again not 15 minutes later on my way back and it was gonna. 😞 Gotta act quickly if you see something good
I wish my council still did it that way (Merri Bek), but you now have to book a collection and you're allowed 2 per year of a certain size. If you go over that size you lose your second booking. I like it better when everyone puts their stuff out all at once, and then you can go around having a polite lift and sift of everyone else's stuff. Last time we booked a collection they forgot about it for weeks. When we rang and reminded them they came and got it and the nature strip was all dead! In the meantime people had been coming after nightfall to add paint cans and other stuff that you're not allowed to and the pile was huge.
I’ve got a hard rubbish collection coming up too, and I’m putting all the good stuff out today in case someone wants it. No large pots though, unfortunately. Hopefully the rain holds off

in the market for a new job and article this morning about australian companies trialing and succeeding with 4 day work weeks here has me glimmer of hoping. difference in quality of life between 5 and 4 days is incredible.

Just gotta make sure it's not Bunnings' idea of a 4 day work week which is really just a compressed work week (same ft hours over 4 days)

- I am going to be a pioneer of the 2 day work week (20 hours a day)
- For real. I prefer 5x8 over 4x10.
We do a 3/4 day on Fridays and even that adds to quality of life dramatically
- haven't heard of that before, sounds excellent. speaking only for office/knowledge jobs and maybe not 100% of jobs are like this but.. almost every one i have had has contained substantial filler, would happily trade for time off and more compressed/efficient work hours. we would easily spend half a day a week in meetings that don't need to happen.
It really is nice. I did half day Fridays for years and the weekend felt extra.

My hot water unit is finished, the gas pilot isn't staying on for more than 24 - 48 hours. The unit is from 1995. I've been told they don't usually last almost 30 years so this house did well with it. It's a fun game going into the shower on a cold winter's day and wondering if hot water is going to come out or if the pilot's gone off. Going to cost 2k to get replaced! Love these unexpected large expenses. Anyway, trying to not let it ruin my weekend. Things break, such is life.

The subscriber counts here are a bit dodgy. I think it is only showing the subscribers on the instance you are in, not overall. I accidentally went to my other group from this account and thought it had dropped from about 200 subscribers to 3! It makes me wonder how many subsribers we actually have here, if the 358 showing is just people subscribed from this instance we may actually have quite a few more. Although I think the users/posts/comments counts are really more meaningful anyway.

Will fall back on the Sistine Chapel ceiling by a proper jigsaw brand with a real picture on the box. Not in the mood for deciphering a jumbled up picture.
Sister has lent me a rather nice jigsaw called Diverse Women. No women in the picture just a lot of squiggles. Maybe that one after the Sistine Chapel.

Off topic, hey just wanted to say thanks for talking about Atomic Heart on reddit a couple weeks back. I never would have known about it as I am super casual gamer. I’m about halfway through it now and it’s a KILLER game 10/10. It’s like if Half-Life and Bioshock had a baby.
<3 I 100% get you. Mental health sucks, my doctor gave me the wrong health care plan and no medicare is saying I can't get the care plan for some reason. So now I have to like wait for the doctors to get back to me but I feel like I might have to make an appointment to see them.

Just some thoughts.

If you can't tell what the product is, the product is you.
It has often been a problem with artwork, both on social media sites and when you do things like enter competitions or use your own work to be printed on an item you are often giving away the rights. Now that AI is involved our words have also become more valuable to companies, even random passing conversations.
- Oh, I have no illusions about that. It was just a passing thought on the times I’ve seen people get mad about seeing content used in online news. If anyone thought they still owned anything they posted, they just might want to think again.

So I had this problem where I couldn't open more than one page in my browser. I asked the man to have a look and he said everything is fine. Then the interrogation started.

Me: I don't know. Chrome I guess.

He shakes his head. Then proceeds to educate me on Google vs Google Chrome vs Samsung browser. Now you smart people probably already know this. I did not even though I've had 3 Samsung phones and 3 Samsung tablets over the last 10 years. I have learnt lots in the past few days. I will continue to learn. I at least showed him how to use the airfryer the other day.

- One of the bonuses to relationships that I like. Especially when their expertise can help you further. I'm a writer, and one of my stories that I hope gets published one of these days, involves a character from WW2 Russia. So my partner helped me a lot when it came to guns from that time. Of course, what I bring to the table is just stupid Wikipedia knowledge because I need to know stuff that doesn't benefit me in life at all.
- Once someone shows me something I can pick it up quite quickly. Plus he is a very good teacher. Very patient and he makes me demonstrate what I have been shown so I get it. We do compliment each other. There's been a lot of funny moments.

Had an interesting day, yesterday I watched a pretty cool YT of Danny Elfman, he's old and weird and awesome and so talented. But watching him gave me the confidence to be older and weird too. I'm just miserable if I wear beige and be "comfy" and be my "age". I like to have some style, I like to express myself, have fun, wear black even. So today I bought black and stylish stuff, including a cute jumper with embroidered stars and moons and a grey cashmere top . Felt good. :)

God that Aldi mushroom triangle pasta is nice! But of a tomato/Italian sauce on it and it’s heavenly!

Has anyone renewed their learners before? I thought I could just renew it online, but nope looks like I have to go in and renew it... what's annoying is that they're only open when I'm at work!

So I was curious about what's happening over on Reddit, and turns out some subs are opening up because they're worried of Reddit admins gutting the mod teams and putting new ones in. It's already happened with advice animals. Not like it hasn't happened before, the head mod of Kotaku in Action (basically that whole gamergate shit, that IMHO, the guy who started it lied), essentially privated the sub because he was over it and hated seeing how hateful people were, he was removed and Admins put in new modding team.

What's the mobile app for this site? "Jerboa for Lemmy" and using aussie.zone for the server? I'm trying to hook up some old DT members.

Jerboa isn't too bad once you get used to it's quirks imo. But I wasn't able to figure out how to sign in with Aussie.zone so I ended up creating a sh.itjyst.works account and I use that instead
- I signed up at sh.itjust.works first and could not get the aussie.zone to show on it, so created another account here. I didn't realise I could re-use the same user name, so ended up with a new identity too.
I was using Jerboa but have decided that using the site from my phone's browser is a better experience for the time being. The Dev needs to work on it, or someone does, but he said he doesn't have time.
- I am now of this opinion too..I hadn't used the browser version on my phone, but now after your comment, I have and, yes, it's way better than Jerboa. Which is unfortunate, because I like using 3rd party apps for things.
- Lemmy as a whole is still very much a work in progress.

I really need to try to videoing life more, it's way more aesthetic. I'm constantly impressed by people who video things and make it look so nice.

I've never been much of a videoer (is that a word?) but I had a trip to the zoo in Canberra recently and it was so much better to take moving images of a lot of things, I have become quite the convert. It also helps that there are so many easy editing apps to cut out the decent bits.
