I believe "The Giver" has been overlooked.
- Where the Red Fern Grows
- But he didn't freeze to death. There are sequels to The Giver. Gathering Blue isn't a direct sequel but in the same universe. I forget the name of the actual sequel.
  
  I learned something today. What I remember was him pulling up a pleasant memory as he was slowly freezing to death.
