Why do people host Lemmy instances and how do they pay for them?
  • What does it actually cost? I have no basis for a ballpark guess even. I've seen this question asked to a number of admins and haven't seen a direct answer.

It's hard to judge how sustainable a donation based approach is without that info.

  • You choose what instance you are on. Quit the pseudointellectual whining.
  • Isn't this a case of take your own advice?

Many instances have already defederated lots of stuff. If you feel strongly about that shouldn't you migrate there over asking other instances to do the same thing? Seems like if he wanted to he would have here by now.

All just feel like fediverse problems and IMO the action should be take ~2 weeks off line and then evaluate there all the shit lands and decide. In thedude's shoes, I would have already pulled the plug on this as way to much hassle to get into the middle of. Props to him for not.

  • Tired of expensive SodaStream refills and weak carbonation?
  • I've been doing that style thing for years and it's great. Have to say I disagree with his process a bit though. I don't have the space or time to let it carbonate for a few days.

I use a 1.5gal keg. Dump an inch or two of ice in the bottom and fill to about 1 gallon with water. My co2 regulator is set at 50psi. Connect co2 and shake for about a minute. You'll hear it stop bubbling. Leave connected on counter for 15 minutes. Light shake every time you feel like it for those minutes. Disconnect the co2 and put the keg in the fridge. Usually I leave it for another 30 minutes or so before having some.

No need to leave the co2 connected to serve with that pressure and space. You can be drinking the seltzer after that first minute if you want but it is better with that extra time. No patience for days.

  • (Beehaw.org) ANNOUNCEMENT: defederating effective immediately from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works
  • If both a member of Beehaw and a member of lemmy.world are on a community on a third instance (like midwest.social), our comments and posts are invisible to eachother, like the other isn't there

Is that really how it works? It's contrary to my understanding but I can't find that covered in the documentation.

I assumed that the discussion on a post on a 3rd party server would be served by the 3rd party and I would still see comments from beehaw users on that posts.

  • What does the "19.01" mean?
  • I've never really thought about how it's done on the older generation parts. On the newest it's etched by laser. We had a generation where it was stick on barcode and that was the worst.

  • What does the "19.01" mean?
  • Usually it's the date code.

At my company that code would mean 2019 week 1 (first week of jan). We also do a shift number as a 3rd part.

It's also common for the second number to be months.

  • I've always wanted this as a painting

    !

Or the professor opening his wall safe. Too bad I can't paint.

    Jerboa and Newpipe
  • There is a fork of NewPipe which supports sponsorblock. That clips out the segments your talking about. Mainline NewPipe won't support that as an ethical stance so only in the fork.

  • Spez's AMA is live, the shitshow begins
  • I think the real answer has to be that he gave them real numbers he expected them to pay. They all said wtf no but he promised similar numbers to his investors from the official channels.

People who are doing better then him (profit wise) at his own game bailed when asked for things he promised to deliver.

  • What search engine do you use? (and why?)
  • It's only a few bucks a month. I think so.

The only thing I don't like is needing to be logged in to search. That always feels like a huge invasion of privacy. The at least claim that they don't log search contents though
