  • I thought that it was mostly religious folk who studied religion. Considering that this place is quite atheist in nature, I thought it would be unpopular.

  • The folks I'm surrounded with approach God as a scientific concept. I mean it's not a wrong approach by any means btw. It's just that when approached scientifically, theism sounds like absolute bullshit. Kinda like how old plague doctors and blood letting would sound like to modern doctors. Hence, studying it (at least in my circle) sounds like a waste of time. Which is why I thought this opinion would be unpopular.

BUT approaching it from the historical perspective, where it's something that humans did/still do makes things so much more interesting!

  • Unpopular Opinion @lemmy.world

    Studying religions is actually fun!

  • Okay, so according to the trans mountain pipeline corporation, it returned 1.7B to the owner in 2025 and 0.45B in Q1 2026.

It says that the forecasted dividends for the coming years are higher. I'm not sure how they forecasted this, but whatever.

They also talk about some "optimization program" to increase throughput volumes by 30%.

Regardless, let's say the average revenue goes to around 2B per year. In that case, it would require around 20 years to break even (considering the 4.5B + 34B put in by the feds). Everything after that is profit.

Buuuut yeah, I don't have data on projected oil demand till 2046. And constructing ANOTHER megaproject in addition to this one... Yeeeeah I dunno....

They like putting up business studies and projected revenues and all that for everything. Why not for the new pipeline? That's just so unprofessional and irresponsible.

He just now looks like an entertainer, or a cheerleader instead of someone actually willing to engage in good faith convos.

  • Wellll there's still a hidden variable (which is hidden in the plan seat list of whatever, that contains who that seat belongs to).

We haven't been able to prove such hidden variables present before collapsing the wave function yet.

  • If God is real then God must die.

If God is real then God doesn't love the creatures on this planet. This sentient creature created a reality filled with suffering of the highest order.

A counter argument to this is this:

We cannot understand God's plan as we aren't capable of understanding it because we aren't God.

This argument is quite stupid in my opinion. Zeus raped people. Is Zeus bad? I think we can agree that Zeus is bad. If a super advanced alien created a human zoo, put humans in it without their consent and also put in wasps whose stings make the humans want to kill themselves. Would we say that the alien is benevolent? Would we say "oooh, Mr. Alien is too advanced for us to perceive their plan, but Mr. Alien definitely loves us"? No, we would try to escape and kill that alien so that it can never harm us ever again. Why does God get special treatment then?

  • I'm not sure if ur profile picture is real, but in case it is: You, sir have a magnificent beard!

  • I fail to understand time and time again how people can tolerate those little annoying squeakers. They aren't even cute ffs.

That being said, firecrackers just suck. Animals, babies, the elderly, folks sensitive to loud noises, folks with war related PTSD, the environment, all of this has to suffer because "oooo prettyyyyy".

There are other forms of celebration and entertainment that do not have such negative externalities. Example: the opening ceremony of Paris 2024.

  • Quite a few assumptions being made and quite a lot of hyperbole.

    • The richest man in the world is not representative of the human race. Also, settling Mars (within timelines that musk is suggesting) is not treated seriously by any institution with significant power.
    • We aren't putting earth's ability to host life in jeopardy. Not even close. Yes, human caused climate change is bad. Worst case outcomes lead to most human settlements going under water and extinctions in a manner that the planet has seen only a few times. But again, not even close where we need to abandon earth cuz we "ruined it" or whatever. Not even nuclear war would lead humanity to come to this conclusion.

As for why a civilization should be interested in spreading out as much as possible in case it wants to survive:

    • spreading out reduces the probability of extinction. Right now, one gamma ray burst that's close enough, and that is aimed at earth can render the entirety of humanity extinct. But if we were more spread out, not all humans would have to die. The same logic can be applied to relativistic weapons aimed at earth.
    • spreading out gives us access to a lot of resources. Earth's gravity and atmosphere makes it hard to manufacture and launch megastructures. Megastructures can allow us to create really cool stuff.
    • many humans find exploring the universe really cool!

If alien species are anything like us, I highly doubt that they'd come to the conclusion that you've posited.

  • IT REALLY IS!!!

  • No.

Also, I'd recommend caring about being cringe. True freedom is achieved when you stop caring.

  • If he was alive, he should have rights too. However, he should be in a facility that doesn't let him out. His existence out in society, communication with society is all a massive threat to society.

  • Solution X wasn't 100% effective, hence solution X was ineffective.

We're talking about federal policy. Stuff that the federal government can do. Can it do more? Definitely. Is it actively doing stuff contrary to what would be considered as "climate protection"? Yes. But that does not make carbon taxes good or bad policy.

The logic behind taxing carbon is the following:

    • carbon emissions are a negative externality
    • taxing something tends to reduce that behavior
    • subsidizing something tends to encourage that behavior.
    • a tax that taxes consumption of goods, where the act of consumption and production of that specific good leads to carbon emissions, discourages consumption of that good. The collected tax was redistributed to folks.

The effect of the above was simple. If you lived a lifestyle that resulted in more carbon emissions, you suffered a loss. If your lifestyle involved less carbon emissions, you profited. Regardless, the tax encouraged you, and through your consumption habits, the entire economy to reduce carbon emissions.

Right now, the federal government has dropped the consumer carbon tax and instead increased the industrial carbon tax. The effect is literally the same. Industries pass on the tax to consumers. Except, you don't get a rebate anymore lol.

  • MLM = Men loving men.

MLM also means "Multi level Marketing" (scheme). It's basically a scam. Herbalife was one of such companies that used this methodology of scamming.

MLM scams work like this: Hey, we have product X. Buy this product from us and become a distributor. You can ask other friends and family to sell this for you or you can sell it yourself! You have total control. You set your own work hours, yada yada yada. Buy 1000 items of product X from us now!

Quite a few people I knew growing up got caught up in this Herbalife nonsense. They used to buy a lot of their product (which was a meal replacement powder to allegedly help for weight loss) so that they could become distributors.

So what's the difference between a legitimate company looking for a distributor and a company running an mlm scam? A company looking for a distributor has its real income flowing through actual consumers. An mlm scam has its income coming from such so called "distributors" down the road, who buy the product from other distributors so that they can distribute it further.

Many of the folks I knew who were in this Herbalife thing eventually had to consume all the product they bought themselves lol. Herbalife got rich in the process.

  • A phone is quite likely one of the most touched and seen item by the user in their day. For something like that, tactile sensation, ergonomics and looks kinda do matter, no?

I can't be the only one who receives genuine pleasure from handling a clean, smooth glass brick every day, right?

And yes, phones are expensive and important. That's why we just... Use them carefully and not drop them.

If I purchased an expensive car, I'd use it carefully. I wouldn't cover it up with plastic protection mats or whatever you protect it in case I crash.

And again, about dropping the phone... Just... Don't drop it? How does a drop even happen? Is it really that hard not to drop a phone?
