What is your favorite though provoking movie?
  • The Man from Earth; low budget sci-fi mostly just people talking in a living room. I like how it plays with expectations about knowledge of history and explores different epistemologies of the supporting characters in their line of questions or how they engage with the core concept.

  • US Supreme Court rules Trump has immunity for official, not private acts
  • 2021-01-02 Trump on a call with Georgia election officials asked them "All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have because we won the state."

Not an official act on any planet in this solar system, how is this not a loss for Trump?

  • ScummVM is my emulator of choice, like ePSXe it runs on phones and opens it up to a bunch of classics

  • If you don't mind a classic chess. Blitz/bullet/rapid/horde are different styles that don't take as long to learn enough to have fun. Chess puzzles or against the computer are available if you want to keep it strictly single player. Lichess for multiplayer or I like chess tactics pro for puzzles.

Crosswords, there are programs like alphacross that aggregate from other sources to try different puzzles to find ones that aren't too easy or hard.

  • Alright, you've had enough fun today buddy.
  • Driving without a destination or repeatedly passing the same point multiple times is usually how the measure it

  • Supreme Court allows cities to ban homeless people sleeping outside, even when shelter space is lacking
  • They want to imprison homeless instead of house them to exploit them for slave labor. Abolish slavery in prisons and see if they keep outlawing homelessness.

  • Alright, you've had enough fun today buddy.
  • Bullshit cruising or loitering ordinances that should have never been passed would probably be the excuse cops use in many areas

  • Netflix mulls introducing free ad-supported tier. The circle is complete
  • I won't support any streaming service that has a sub+ad tier. Ads with no sub or sub no ads, anything else is incredibly greedy and the same as cable TV.

  • Analysis: The fertility crisis is here and it will permanently alter the economy | CNN Business
  • Good, lower OECD birth rates means member countries can open the borders more for immigrants looking for better prospects, better compensation and benefits for jobs in high cost of living areas, and less stupid hiring processes. Every labor shortage is a capital shortage. Also notice how CNN quotes executives and no labor leaders.

  • What the fuck
  • I find Frank Zappa's opposition to censorship pretty inspiring and hope this trend continues:

"The biggest threat to America today is not communism, it's moving America toward a fascist theocracy, and everything that's happened during the Regan administration is steering us right down that pipe. [...] When you have a government that prefers a certain moral code derived from a certain religion and that moral code turns into legislation to suit one certain religious point of view, and if that code happens to be very very right wing, almost toward Attila the Hun."

  • If I learned anything from Carlsen-Niemann we're going to need to check their butts.

  • In the books I think the shire does end up getting attacked after Sauron is defeated in the post war Battle of Bywater.

  • What space object do you find the most interesting?
  • My two biggest are probably Sol and voids. I wish I could directly observe the phase transition as you approach the star's core, understand it's corona patterns and behavior, observe deeper to predict CMEs, etc it's just so close and present in our daily lives and still very mysterious. For the voids I'm not sure maybe because it's defined by its boundary more than its contents, but they are pretty common and some are huge and it's just difficult to study something that is defined by its lack of something.

  • For Many Greeks, Six-Day 48-Hour Work Week Now Set to Begin July 1st
  • Every labor shortage is a capital shortage. If you compensate better for pretty much any job people will work them. It's employers trying to shift the blame, but if they want 500 widgets but can only afford to employ enough staff to make 50 widgets it's not the employees fault they didn't get an extra 450 widgets for free, labor doesn't work that way.

Tips for living an advertising free/minimal life?

Just trying to live with as little advertising as possible and curious what tips or tricks the community has aside from moving out to a cabin in the woods.

I can't really get away from road side advertising for now. Public sporting events are completely infected, and for the ads I am forced to see I try to make a conscious effort not to buy their goods or services. I won't subscribe to a streaming service if they have a sub+ad tier, if they're separate free with ads or sub no ads I'll support it.

Not really for any moral stance, but ad blockers are good at avoiding malware and some services are basically broken if you have to wait for an ad network, and I just feel mentally healthier in general without the extra propaganda.
