You know you love to see it
No worries. It's all good. ๐
That's Eric S Raymond (ESR) not Richard Stallman (RMS). ESR was an early and influencial voice in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), advocating for a distinction between Open Source and Free Software, acknowledging the GNU Public License (GPL) would not work for all parties, some flexibility was need.
RMS is a GPL purist and against any form of compromise. Both made a huge impact and helped make the world and internet better. But they both contributed in very different ways.
Use a URL shortener like bitly.
Earnest question, what did the $30/year get you? I never gave them a penny out of my own pocket, didn't know why I would.
It's a win win. Either they don't go that, and lots of posts and comments say, "come join us here in the fediverse!", or they delete the posts and comments which still deprives reddit of our content for them use to make money.
Copy the text of your comments to here in the fediverse and link to them directly. (or, at least to your profile page)
I've seen a bunch of reddit refugees like me comment here in the fediverse that the have deleted their posts and comments on reddit.
Rather than do that, I propose all rexxitors instead edit all of their posts and comments to say that they are leaving reddit for good to go to the fediverse instead. Such edits should provide links to major Fediverse sites and getting started guides, with advice for other redditors to abandon that place and join us here.
I'm abandoning reddit in phases. I'm keeping RIF on my phone until June 30, but will not visit Reddit like I once did. I'm participating in the Fediverse instead, posting and commenting a lot more than I ever did in the old site.
Between here and June 30, I may peek at the front page as the situation develops, especially if any news posted here indicates dramatic developments.
One or two days before June 30, I'll edit all of my comments and posts to say I'm leaving reddit for good, while also providing links to the Fediverse and advice for other redditors to abandon the show and join us here.
Yah, I've got the same experience. ๐
I figure why wait for the building to fall, get out while I still can.
This is the way.
Well, that...plus popcorn.
I'm liking the Fediverse, and enjoying Beehaw/Lemmy/etc. I'm still learning this new world, but I'm loving it so far!
Everyone who used RIF should go BUY A COPY NOW, while you still can (if you haven't already).
Show the Devs your love, and your thanks.
You can also email the devs to say your thanks in words. But your $2.99USD will be just as important!!
RIF was my way to get to Reddit. I will miss it terribly. So long, and thanks for all the fish.
My melancholy is tempered by the Fedirverse, Lemmy, and particularly, here at Beehaw! ๐
This feels like a better and nicer home, anyway. I'm sad for the loss, and this smaller community won't have what the scale of Reddit's user base could bring...but the nicer and happier community here has its own virtues.
It reminds me of the best of Slashdot, among other small and very valuable online communities of yore. ๐
I don't see a battle here, personally. I think this is just a downhill slope to armagedon. We're watching Rome burn. We will likely see a continued increase of users flocking to Lemmy sites/nodes as more people become aware of what's going on and its impact. Reddit will get UGLY, possibly on an exponential slope,.
Pass the popcorn. This is going to be one hell of a show.
(don't get me wrong, it SUCKS. But we can't do anything about Reddit's foolish choices. We can only make the most of this opportunity for our new community here in the Fediverse. </imho>)
A post to a news story about Apollo shutting down at the end of this month was already made, but I thought that the original post by the Apollo Dev was worth also citing. This is a VERY interesting read, though long. He also has audio recordings of all his dealings with Reddit of late.
Same. RIF is / was my app. It's a shame in some ways, but this place is better in many other ways. I'm happy here and look forward to seeing the Fediverse grow!
Fuck reddit, VCs, and greedy assholes.
Slashdot, one of the first predecessors to reddit, had ratings good comments like, "insightful", "informative", "funny", "redundant", "off topic", and more.
I always thought it was much better than just I'll or down vote.
Wow. That was quite the read. Thank you very much for sharing that, it definitely clears up a few things that I had sort of intuited, but not really articulated in my own head.
What does it take to spin up an instance and federate? Can I just grab a docker image and go with some cloud Linux instance? What resources are we looking at for what headcount of users / level of engagement? (ie, posts and or connections per minute, etc)
I've heard good things about the Well, but never was a part of that community. Is love to see what it's like, maybe I'll check it out.
