  • The problem is everyone is claiming "generative Ai" because they think it will result in lower costs or higher sales. No one has a official definition, I would think generative Ai is llm, another comment stated it was only about creating images and firing artists.

It's a buzz word. It's like social network a few years ago. Does Facebook count as a social network? How about steam? OK, now what about world of warcraft? Discord? What's the difference between a social network and a old school forum? All let you make friends, talk with friends and enjoy each other's company. Could be argued AIM was a social network...

  • Yeah. That's a big problem in the current reality, what is "Ai" besides a sale term? Hell from the game dev world there has been a "generative Ai" for years which took "trees"(pre-made images and meshes) and allowed you to kinda "brush" a forest down which kinda looked normal as none of the trees were in straight lines or specific distances.

  • You are right but I was using it mainly for formatting, not writing the script. Granted I could of written a single purpose script to strip space, add a comma and add a new line.

I wrote the script of how to pull the data, I was mostly using it to format the lists my boss sent me.

I didn't just take the email, copy into Ai, copy result back to email and send. I wrote the script for 1 serial, asked Ai to modify it for the following 150 serials, run it in smms, then send results.

If you were my boss, would you want me to spend my time doing... Backspace, comma, enter, down arrow....150 times? Especially if you need results fast? Yeah I could but why? Unless it was just a lazy day and felt like drooling on the keyboard.

  • Ai has been in games for decades. No, not llm Ai. Enemy movement is a classic case of Ai. Hell chess has been running on Ai for years depending on your platform(yes you can play against other people in most cases but most cases also have a play against Ai mode)

What did they mean by Ai in the question? Better question, what did the responders think they meant?

  • Even generative Ai has minor uses... For example I've used before we had a database with multiple tables but one included the the device serial number, a test type, and a test guid. Another table actually had the details of each test keyed by that test guid.

My boss would commonly send me list of serial numbers(not formatted, just space separated) and a request the test details for each device. I would setup a query for 1 serial number that returned the requested information, go onto copilot/chatgpt and say something like "write a query like this but with with all these serial numbers". Yes I could do it my self, copy the list in, erase the space, add a comma, add a new line, repeat for each serial number(largest request o got ever was 650). The Ai got it in seconds and I verified several serial numbers picked randomly. I don't recall it ever not working as expected. That's a small use case and I gave lots of context.

  • I've said it before Ai has uses, about 5% of what it's being shoved into.

For example I was working with a optical measurement system company. You basically took a bunch of photos of what you wanted measured, they would put it through a Ai system and determine the optimal light, contrast, tool, and etc settings to set and then you could use that to setup your system and measure thousands more devices.

Thats probably a system Ai is good at, and they had a chart like with "x photos expect y accuracy, with z photos expect a accuracy" with like 20 options. It was especially good if you could give as accurate of reading possoble, or optimally just "these are good, these are bad".

  • I honestly feel very similar. The closest I can kinda understand is like a guy at birth wanting to wear a skirt, in which case I say go rock that skirt. Or maybe a girl at birth wanting to feel accepted in certain male dominated activities in which case it's a problem with those activities and not the girl.

I'm a guy at birth, I guess I identify as a guy but it's meh. If I was misgendered at most I would make a overly dramatic joke but it wouldn't effect my physiologicaly.

  • Proper comments describe why... For example say you are using an api which requires guids and your application doesn't care are collisions as much so just use int id's.

You could add in a comment like

// creating a guid to interface with special api.

    But just saying

    // generate guid

Means nothing, your method should be generate_guid() or GenerateGuid(). Your comment is repeating.

Or this is probably going to hit my last company at some point, there was a system to read a serial number. They also wanted a "status" on the screen to verify the system was connected and running properly but both these values came over same signal wire. Depending on your exact ms timing sometimes you would read the status as the serial number. Another programmer wrote a check to verify the serial number did not start with OK. The comment added was

// add on 11/15/23 by Initials

With no other details. The serial numbers were 8 numeric digits. Someone won't know the history and delete this seemingly useless check and cause a 10s of 1000s of dollars in loss

  • Honestly I feel like he was kinda right, they took $1600 from him, held it for a week, by following their directions and basically told him to get over it.

I will say he was perfectly nice to the agent, no cursing or raising a voice, just "no I won't hang up till you resolve this." "sir there is nothing I can do" "I won't hang up till you resolve this" in a single monotone voice for 11.5 hours... That agent probably needs therapy.

  • I had an old roommate do this. He purchased plane tickets from American Airlines and they had the option to pay through PayPal. He choose that option. Money went through, and tickets were immediately canceled by A A. He called them and they said "that's a bug that happens sometimes. The tickets will be refunded in 5-7 business days, just place the order again and it should work."

    It didn't work.

He called them again at 805 the next morning. He got told the same line. He refused to hang up until it was made right. He was on the phone with that poor agent for 11. 5 hours. Eventually she just said" look sir, you were my first call of the day and I'm now on overtime, I'm transferring you to my manager".

Manager did make it right, he got free tickets(about $800 dollars), an additional $1600 on future flight vouchers, and about a week later the transactions were reversed. He came out of it with 2400 in profit. That said 11.5 hours on the phone making small talk with customer serviceand refusing to hang up might just push me over the edge.
