  • Well sure, but the summer actually makes up for it.

(Personally: I'm from Finland, have had depression with seasonal pattern. Winters aren't that bad, early/late winter sucks though. Psychochemically, because the day length is noticeably changing and sleeping patterns get disturbed. Socially, because all sidewalks and walking paths get really slippery no matter how much sand and gravel they put there and going outside gets a bit scarier.)

  • Also, Jupyter Lab is one of the coolest environments for scientific programming. Write documentation and explanations of your work in Markdown while writing the code, and seeing the results. Oh, and it's programming language agnostic, Python is just the default. I use it with R most of the time.

  • The problem with cryptocurrencies is that you can explain it, without going to technical details, to a person with the intelligence of an average investment banker. (Which isn't much. Many animals make more profitable random investments when prompted.)

Same with generative AI I guess.

  • Ah yes, the old Fediverse debate.

    "What about Matrix? Signal?"
"Those don't use ActivityPub, so they're not really Fediverse as such."
    "What about cryptocu—"
    (pffffft) "Oh piss off."

  • Yeah, when I was at the university I could have bought the spiral bind plastic thing for a pittance at the paper shop, and done the damn thing for free at at one of the many spiral bind stations.

...except all of the spiral bound things I did there in early 2000s are randomly falling apart and I don't want to really touch 'em any more! Glad I still have the PDFs of the course work I did somewhere around here.

NOT ARCHIVAL QUALITY is what I'm getting at.

  • I'm in Finland, the week starts at Monday, Wednesday is "keskiviikko" (mid-week), and I always thought it was called that because it's in the middle of the work week. Because naming the middle of the work week is very important, and nobody gives a damn about the calendar in the weekend, because it's time to chill.

  • Oh yeah, one of the pics that inspired me to study French. I was dreading the numerals but it's not that bad. You count tens and twenties and sometimes they're special. And numbers below 20 have specific names, but that's kinda true in most languages.

A lot of languages have weird corner cases. (Like, in Finnish most numbers are perfectly regular. Except 11-19 which are not "one-ten-and-x" but rather "x-of-the-second". I'm sure there's a reasonable etymological reason. At least they're not "teens".)

  • The law defines "non-human" behavior "any type of behavior... not typically] displayed by a member of the homo sapiens species,"

"My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Florida forever."

  • [stern stare]

Forgotten the history, have we? I was referring to Microsoft's tactics in the early 2000s.

Crypto bros have watered down the term and made it a laughing matter. They ruin everything they touch. Goddamn it.

  • I've often been like "I don't know why people complain about Fandom, this is fine". And then I saw what the site looks like without uBlock. Sweet merciful heavens. Hey, there's some ads. Let's cram some ads in the ads. Some prime blank space? Shove some annoying video things in there. Autoplaying. See that navigation bar over there? Let's make it pointless. (If you come to the article via web search, surely you want to read about some completely random stuff in another game!)

Fandom is garbage, Fextralife is garbage (and at this rate will probably be bought by Fandom one day). Indie wikis rule.
