Small 'micromobility' vehicles gain traction amid rising car prices
  • interesting, yeah having to lug it around inside is a big turnoff for me. is there a good way to lock them up and leave them somewhere? that's sort of an open question.

there are definitely large communities for one wheel enthusiasts. i think they're often less about tinkering and more about meeting up and riding together. from what I've seen they are largely organized through message groups and discord.

from what I've seen, my friend doing the open source one wheel isn't alone in his efforts, but the group around it isn't nearly as big as the cousin euc guys. i think he's like 90% to "completion", though I'm sure he'll never stop tinkering.

another big appeal for me is their use as filmmaking tools. I'm a videographer, these go great with a gimbal. i wonder if an euc would be similarly useful.

  • i would love if you'd be willing to tell me more about safety.

im definitely turned off by how you look when you stand on it, but i could be convinced to look past that with enough reason.

I'm also curious if they would work as well as a one wheel for filmmaking. I'm a videographer, i have peers that use one wheels very effectively with gimbals to get really nice smooth tracking shots.

the note about carrying it around is useful. like i said, having 4 dudes carrying a one wheel enter a room can cause a problem. there is often not that much space to actually put something like that down and out of the way.

is there a good way to lock these up to like a bike lock or something?

  • oh that is handsome. but I'm more interested in what a person looks like on it. it's more about the awkward sort of stiff lean that your have to do on them. i just can't see that and not think it looks a bit goofy.

  • Beware Hollywood’s digital demolition: it’s as if your favourite films and TV shows never existed
  • obviously a news show isn't going to feel the same rewatching it. that's not the point lol.

that would be like saying it's dumb to preserve newspapers in libraries because it's not going to feel as good rereading the "Hitler is dead" headline. people don't look at old news to have a good time.

boy was it silly of us to preserve that kind of thing and it totally never comes in handy/s

that's not even what people are upset about anyway. comedy Central mostly makes entertainment programming that isn't news based and can still be enjoyed whenever. believe it or not, comedy Central has a lot of content that will stand the test of time. especially when looking at their stand-up catalogue.

this is the destruction of a library. a digital one, but a library none the less. that's what people are mad about.

but you're right. we should just dump all of our old movies and shows. they're worthless moldy junk anyway... 🙄

  • I have many friends that use one wheel skateboards. I've tried them once or twice, but I've always been curious why there's seemingly so little overlap between the euc and one wheel communities. both camps seem to almost not acknowledge the other.

I'm slightly more in the one wheel camp, but I'm not sold on either of them. hanging with one wheel people started to get me really annoyed by them carrying the one wheel in with them EVERYWHERE they're not that small in the context of an elevator when 4 people have them. and they always bump them into things and it causes a lot of damage. I've got marks on my walls because of them. obviously, is easier to deal with than a car in theory, but there's already so much infrastructure to help you deal with your car.

that said, the one wheel crew beat the rest of us to every event in the city every time. they are genuinely convenient for getting around, and they can easily and confidently go off road. that's huge to me. you don't need a decent road or bike path for them.

it sounds like perhaps the key differences are speed (euc is faster it seems), off road capability, and how you stand on the thing. the stance is actually very important to me. i try not to, but damnit i care if i look good. you don't look cool on an euc. ever. one wheels on the other hand just look like cyber punk skateboards.

the speed isn't a huge concern. those one wheels are already pretty damn fast. i can't imagine it would often be safe to go faster than they can.

all that said, I'm not sold on either, and haven't done much research into electric unicycles. please, sell me if it's something you're passionate about. why should i prefer an euc? also, i do want to try understand why there's such a strong separation in these groups if i can.

  • interesting, i know many people that like them and none of them have ever had that issue as far as I'm aware.

damnit, i should have said all that to the other guy..

  • why those over a one wheel?

i hate to say it, but I'd be embarrassed to be seen in public on one of these. they just look... dweeby? i think it's the posture you have to take on it. it's so awkward looking. the wider sideways stance of the one wheel skateboard is so much more natural looking. and they're better on harder terrain.

the company itself sucks from what i understand, so tha's a fair argument, but i have a friend that makes them open source/pirated with third party parts. why would i choose one of these over one of those?

  • Wyoming considers slight change to law allowing wolves to be killed with vehicles
  • yeah what the fuck, how could that possibly ever be safe for anyone or anything.

i was generally under the impression that it was illegal to intentionally hit anything with your vehicle without consent. i just never checked because I've never wanted to hit something with my car.

the risk is the same as any other international transport and release of a non native species; invasive species that damage the ecosystem. that these are creatures that don't exist anywhere and don't have a native habitat just makes them that much harder to predict. this was all clearly done without any thoughts about the repercussions or how to avoid them.

  • Why do people keep fact-checking Republicans? 😭
  • God damnit. if you understand anything about our global weather observation network you know that if America privatizes the entire world will have way way less accurate weather no matter what anyone pays.

the only reason things work so well now is because the whole world openly and freely shares all of this data. this is important because all of the world's weather patterns effect each other. there's only so much data that can be collected without being in the territory as well. so much of the world'd infrastructure relies on this information being available and accurate. privatizing it would surely be massively profitable and horribly detrimental to everyone and everything. it's one of the very few actually decent cooporative things humanity has ever done. of course rich bullies want to come and stomp it out.

  • Why do people keep fact-checking Republicans? 😭
  • yeah, when you look close enough it's amazing how often that that answer is the only one, and how blatantly they do it.

they say democracy dies in the dark, but if like 10% more people actually watched cspan when major votes take place i don't think we'd keep many Republican politicians. it's an amazingly one sided effort to obstruct every single Democratic policy no matter what it is. they threw the toy over the fence, sat down, and started screaming and shitting like 10 years ago and nothing positive has gotten done since. they are literally the party of intentionally breaking the government.

there's no way that many Americans actually want that...

  • Of course, that's what THEY want you to think.
  • nah, anything is more correct here. it's like and/or vs neither/nor. "i do understand everything" is the grammatical opposite of "i don't understand anything". "i don't understand everything" is a different sentence entirely. it would only imply that there are aspects of "everything" they don't understand, rather than that there is nothing they understand.

  • Self-reflection
  • it's a good feeling unless you can't print otherwise and the teacher is an asshole.

I had that once in highschool, so no Dean to escalate to or anything. principal took his side. the problem was, due to medical issues, i struggled to get assignments done at home. this class was 90% essays, but it was also just a history class. 100% of the material was covered in the lecture. I'm autistic and tend to remember lectures very well. so, come time for the final exam, one of the only actual in class exams, and i get nearly a perfect score. i knew the material, i just had other struggles with getting the papers done.

he used my struggle with the rest of the class as the only proof he needed to get me expelled. i had to finish my schooling at an alternative school, which was way way better anyway and honestly wasn't a setbacm in the end. it sure set the tone for my relation with authority though.

  • The past is a foreign country.
  • we still have a couple of lemon giving phrases that survive "when life gives you lemons". "looks like that car you bought is a lemon"

lemons are sour instead of sweet like most fruit. my guess is that a lemon is a thing to generally make your day/life worse, especially if it seemed like a good thing at first.

makes sense in the context of a "confirmed bachelor". he's giving that lemon to a stork. he's not going to have children. someone married him and he's not going to have children. back in the day that would be seen as defeating the point of marriage, though the real implication is he's gay and married for a beard.

in the context of other relationships or a breakup they thought they were dating someone for keeps, turns out they weren't worth it. they were a lemon, looked sweet but tasted sour when bitten into.

  • haha, i did take 4 pictures until i was thought that the show would be recognizable 😅

  • holy shit, i forgot that was Colin Farrell! i'm a big fan of him in mcdonagh movies.

i was only kind of into the new Batman with the riddler, but the vibe feels right for it to be more of a mob story instead.

love the cinematography. I'm a videographer myself and happen to own and love one of the old lenses they use a lot on this show.

one episode isn't enough to make any judgements, but I can say that I'm looking forward to the next episode.

  • Is martial arts really that useful?
  • all of the "real" Martial arts from back before guns were about using weapons. those aren't really practiced as much anymore because they're all useless in the face of firearms anyway. why spend years training with a knife when the same time could be spent training with a gun. if combat effectiveness is your goal then you need to learn modern combat techniques.

that said, there's plenty to be learned from it, and it's not like it can't help you in a fight. but as another commenter said, the real way to win every fight is by avoiding them. so really the best thing to learn is de-escalation and recognizing danger.

  • their point is that this is a game with maybe 50 still image assets and absurdly simply gameplay. it could be like 2MB, but it was likely built on preexisting assets and code that don't try to be lightweight.

the point is that 10 years ago the exact same game would have been like 25MB at most. I'm not familiar enough with the changes in the tools used by Indy devs in the time, but my guess is that it's where you'll find the reason.
