Chrome, Firefox and other browsers affected by critical WebP vulnerability
  • Just came here to say that this also affects any applications that use the libwebp library.

That includes many apps that most people don't think of as "browsers".

Electron based applications all use chromium under the hood, and are quite common/prolific these days.

Expect updates to a lot of things in the near future.

  • Any other E6 fans on here??

I think my fave track so far is Staten Island Ass Squad but there's a lot of gems on this one.

    Television
  • I have a TCL and it works just fine without internet.

Honestly, if I bought a TV, brought it home and it refused to function without internet I'd march that thing right back to the store for a refund.

    Vote with your wallet.

  • Everyone with your exact job title in your industry vanishes, how long until awful things happen?
  • Pretty sure the internet would collapse in a matter of hours.

  • Television
  • I hope everyone reading this knows that you can just not connect a "Smart" TV to the internet. Leave it as a "dumb" TV.

Get a separate device like a Roku or AppleTV or Amazon Fire or whatever. The garbage hardware that TV manufacturers slap inside a TV so they can advertise its "smart" features will always be inferior to a purpose built external device.

To say nothing of the security implications of having an unpatched probably unsupported IoT device running on your network for years.

  • [Question Of The Week] What is your "desert island" album?
  • The Duran Duran Tribute album (1997)

  • What was the best "worst. movie. ever"?
  • Ever notice that this movie is basically the same story as The Three Amigos?

  • What songs from foreign languages are most successful among English speakers?
  • Ha! Came here to say this. Ya beat me to it.

  • Windows and Linux users what are your must have apps/programs when you set up MacOS for the first time?
  • BetterTouchTool (which isn't free but is worth every penny) lets you do everything rectangle does. Also lets you configure your mouse buttons to do whatever you want. Also infinite custom hot keys and shortcuts.

Also Raycast as a replacement for Spotlight.

  • What are some of your favorite lyrics?
  • Pretty much anything by Electric Six or Clutch. Honorable mentions to Soul Coughing and VNV Nation.

Karma chameleon, you come and go ā‹… Karma police, arrest this ho. ā‹… Karma's a bitch, it gets a little jumpy when you come near.

-- Electric Six, (It Gets a Little) Jumpy

Like Harry Truman dropping bombs out of the air ā‹… Like any self-respecting multi-billionaire ā‹… This is who you are, five dancing teenage boys ā‹… Who sing their way into our hearts ā‹… Backstreet's back, alright

    -- Electric Six, Jimmy Carter

Next thing that I did was tap out Morse code ā‹… With a wooden nickel on the receiver of the phone ā‹… Before I could complete it, I was quickly overtaken ā‹… By the angry spirits of Ronald and Nancy Reagan

    -- Clutch, X-Ray Visions

I'm curious, what brand/model is the frother?

  • ah, damn. thanks for the info!

  • Google "Nest Detect" sensors

I have a bunch of Nest Detect (A0028) sensors from the now defunct Google Nest home security system.

Anybody know what radio protocol these things use? Zigbee? Z-Wave? some other thing?

I have a Z-Wave USB dongle, or I could get a Zigbee one, but I'm not sure if either of them actually communicates with these devices.

I hate to throw them away, as they're well designed.

  • Not sure what to call this album. "Series of Underscores" ? šŸ˜‚

    Love it so far.

  • And because I drink coffee and I'm a total klutz...

    • Contigo Auto-seal travel mug. These things are practically bomb-proof and prevent spills!
    • a stainless steel double-walled french press. Also bomb-proof and retain heat really well.
  • What are some of the best purchases of your life?
  • Just a word of advice about any/all non-cast-iron pans... never take a hot pan and run it under water. It may create a very satisfying blacksmith blast of steam effect, but it almost invariably results in the bottom of the pan warping to be not-quite-flat.

  • What are some of the best purchases of your life?
  • Things I have done with my Pi(s) --

    1. AirplayPi so I can airplay to my non-Apple speakers.
    2. OctoPi so I can interact with my 3D printer via the local network.
    3. Kodi media player
    4. HomeAssistant hub
    5. PiHole network-wide adblocker
    6. I put Tailscale on an older Pi and plugged it in on my parents' network, so I have remote access to help them with their router or whatever.
    7. RetroPi - classic game emulator. Plays just about everything prior to PS2 generation stuff.
  • What are some of the best purchases of your life?
  • Hell yes. My Brother printer is just a solid workhorse.

  • What are some of the best purchases of your life?
  • TSA Pre-check.

Yes, it's fucking obnoxious that it exists at all, given the "security theater" of it all, but man... being able to breeze past the super long lines at the airport is such a better experience.

  • For non-smokers with friends who smoke, does them smoking make you sad?
  • yes.

as a long time former smoker, I managed to kick the habit, and it makes me sad when my friends haven't been able to do the same.

  • didn't know where to post this, so here it is. A basic infographic on "what is lemmy"
  • Might I suggest a "single column" version as well, for the folks on mobile devices? šŸ˜

  • I'm sure this is probably old news for many folks here, but this label has some fantastic compilation albums. Quite literally days and days worth of material.

    Lemmy in general?

How things are going with Lemmy in general?

    • The software is pretty promising.
    • The network of Lemmy instances is expanding rapidly.
    • The userbase is exploding even more rapidly.
    • The number of Lemmy mobile clients is up to 3, that I know of. (Jerboa, Mlem, Memmy)

The quirks of navigation takes some getting used to, and I kinda like the UX of Kbin better, but I find more engagement happening from the Lemmy side of things, so I guess I'm sticking here.

There doesn't seem to be a way to migrate instances easily (yet?) like with Mastodon. Not sure if that's important, but worth noting.

I'm a little sad there's no Jimmy McMillan character, just for this one prompt.

I'm sure this is a total longshot, given how few folks are likely learning Yiddish on Duolingo, but figured I'd create a community for it anyway.

They say if you don't practice the language every day, it'll never stick.
