  • Microsoft admits Windows 11 needs to be faster and drop ads, and some fixes are already shipping

  • I’ve noticed a lot of windows improvement related posts lately, but absolutely none of them have mentioned a thing about the most important part which is yanking out that stupid fucking tracking ID. What is this, the “what Epstein files “ moment for Microsoft?

    Doesn’t matter they’ve been making it shit for years and just at the wrong time. I’m with the other person on Let’s use Linux. Microsoft can fuck off

  • Microsoft is overhauling the Windows 11 interface with WinUI everywhere

  • Ehh too late.. the whole tracking ID and systemic enshittification (no I don’t want one drive, edge, ads on the start menu, forced into a MS account, ..) I made 2026 the year of the Linux desktop. Cachy mainly (it goes great) with fedora and Debian on other boxes. Couldn’t be happier.

    Clipcascade (clipboard sharing across multiple OSes, handy when “copy from this VM and paste to that VM gets funky with the intermediary rdp client)

    Infisical (self hosted secrets management, used for n8n automation pulls so I’m not storing credentials and api keys on a VPS)

    Plus a Debian 13 VM for Claude+Hermes and a Fedora workstation VM to pretend I have a central workstation somewhere.

  • Right!? I’ll be the first to admit I don’t understand context, windows, or whatever the limit is, but I can’t understand how these large language models have probably exabytes worth of data hoovered up from all over but they can’t remember what I told it either a minute ago or in another chat. I’ve taken to trying to get it to write markdown files to help its own memory, but I don’t know if those are counting against me for context or whatever either.

    Not to pile on, but my real grape is the nanny nature of some of these, especially nannythropic. I can’t tell of our times they told me outright that “I won’t do XYZ. This is a hard limit you can’t get around it.” And I’m sitting here like dude you just created that test record to verify the piping you can’t go back through and delete it because it’s a record delete? Le sigh..

  • Great point.. i’m no expert in software development or user experience or whatever but it just seems obvious to stop adding friction in all forms including your notepad example. And of course the ads for OneDrive and suggestions on the start menu, etc..

    The tough part to me is that it seems Microsoft is thinking they’re the hero by doing common sense stuff solving (part of) a pain they’ve introduced in the first place.

    Anyway, I’m windows free after moving my gaming pc to cachy and couldn’t be happier.

  • I don’t know if this is outdated information or not, but I recall that windows poorly maintained sleep under one of the sleep levels on any device causing battery drain like this.

    Modern Standby configurations that disable traditional S1/S2/S3 state something like that. Unfortunately, for me, it wasn’t solvable and one of the many reasons I don’t use windows anymore.
