Where to start with Linux?
  • Linux is way safer than Windows because barely anyone targets it with malware. As far as safety goes, the main thing is to try and understand what each copy/pasted "sudo" command does before running it. Sudo means "super user do" which gives admin privileges to the commands you are running in command line.

I have never had any malware on any Linux machine I have run. If you're worried because of your threat model (government, hackers, etc), staying within the main built-in repositories will keep you safer.

Things that are community or user-run (RPMfusion, Ubuntu PPA's/Personal Package Archives, AUR/Arch User Repository) are slightly more vulnerable to malicious activity of the kind you're describing, although I have never had a problem trusting them.

  • FTC: Xbox-exclusive Starfield is “powerful evidence” against Activision deal
  • Just look at what Spotify has done to the music industry. There was a massive contraction in the music buying market and music streaming services now are fully dominant. And Spotify + Apple have used their oligopoly status to fuck over artists and even record labels, forcing them to accept a fraction of a penny per stream.

It's not a one to one comparison, but I could see subscription-based game licensing crowding out buy to own games eventually if Microsoft keeps consolidating the market as it has been. And then, once consumers are used to never paying for games individually, Microsoft, Amazon, Sony, etc will be able to dictate whatever terms they want to game developers.

  • Linux for the Airheaded Layman?
  • Yes, with the caveat that it could overwrite the Grub menu/boot partitions of other Linux installs on the device. I'd disconnect all disks with working Linux partitions and possibly all Windows ones too while installing to USB from a Live USB.

  • Are AI a good substitute for D&D?
  • I've never used chatgpt like that, but it's probably okay to do so. One benefit is that you don't have to keep track of the details yourself or juggle a game system because the LLM does it for you. Here is a hackathon full of gpt prompts that might raise your game: https://flowgpt.com/bounty/PEeCw9RxAzmqEC7xt4KM4?promptId=FMEKZxl7wKLFlEwguqDY9

Keep in mind though that there is an entire cottage industry of very fun solo tabletop rpgs that you can play yourself. Here is a blog describing some different categories to help you search for one. There are also many top ten lists to point you in a good direction.

Itch.io has tons of them. Here is a tag cloud that will make you feel like a kid in a candy store: https://itch.io/physical-games/tag-solo-rpg/tag-ttrpg

  • Google is reportedly bringing instantly playable online games to YouTube
  • Stadia was basically a game console as a service, assuming you had good enough internet. You had to pay for the subscription for access, then pay for each game individually. The one benefit of that was very little initial barrier to entry, as you just needed chromecast and a stadia controller.

Youtube playables appears to be just lightweight html5 web app games that run locally in your browser, similar to what flash player was like.

  • GNU Linux-Libre 6.4 Kernel Released for Those Who Want to Build 100% Free PCs
  • Taken from the linked announcement, it appears not:

The GNU Linux-libre project takes a minimal-changes approach to cleaning up Linux, making no effort to substitute components that need to be removed with functionally equivalent Free ones. Nevertheless, we encourage and support efforts towards doing so.

So basically it's the user's or maintainer group's job to select replacement code/libraries/drivers and how they do that is up to them.

  • The only workable discreet GPUs with open source drivers that work right now are on Team Red (AMD) edit: and Intel.

There are good people working on Nvidia foss drivers but they have a long way to go.

  • Linux for the Airheaded Layman?
  • Don't use regular Arch if you're struggling. There are some arch-based distros that are more user friendly, though. Like EndeavourOS or ArchMan. Manjaro can be good too but there are legitimate problems with how the project is run.

I was having graphics driver problems in Ubuntu-based distros until I tried Linux Mint.

If you get crashes right before or after login, it's often a (Nvidia) graphics issue. To get around this, you could use nomodeset in the Grub menu to get a successful first boot where you can then install the proprietary drivers.

Look at sections 4 and especially 5 on this page
Also, here is that info in a tutorial format

Also, you may want to set the Desktop Environment to Xorg or X11 (same thing) if Wayland is causing you problems. It's older, but in some cases more efficient and less experimental. Check out the section: Switching desktop environments using a graphical user interface. It should look similar to the pictures. And notice that the "gear" icon may not appear until you select a user.

If your problem is different than this, open a support ticket in the discord or forums of the distro you're using. Linux Mint has a great system for this on Discord.

  • Linux Laptop for (student) programmer
  • Yeah, Framework seems like a premium product for sure. I want one but I definitely can't afford it anytime soon. Also worth noting that a new framework mainboard rivals the price of some entire laptops. So while it is definitely upgradable and one of the most repairable laptops in the world, it is still a pricy ecosystem to be in.

  • S tier phone, my only complaint is that the bootloader is locked down and downward facing speaker. Next phone I buy will be able to be de-googled.

The battery life is head and shoulders above 99% of the market, oled is a killer feature, so is 120 hz.

  • How to install Linux on a USB without deleting the old bootloader?

I just tried installing Ubuntu Budgie spin on a USB and it seemingly deleted/replaced my Linux Mint bootloader from an internal drive so I could no longer boot Mint without plugging in the Ubuntu USB. When I tried to boot from the Mint drive I just got a blank Grub prompt instead of a list of kernels.

Thankfully I was able to reverse this using Timeshift.

How do you avoid this? I didn't see any relevant options in the Live USB install process. And I have had similar problems like this before.

The behavior I want is to have two standalone Linux bootloaders on separate drives. I suppose I could just disconnect all system drives during install so that the Ubuntu install process can't fuck with it...

I'm sure there's a lot of great stuff, but one highlight is Wanderhome by Jay Dragon which already costs more than the minimum bundle price.

The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Mod/Yuzu Setup Roundup

So you want to run Tears of the Kingdom on PC or Atmosphere?

If you come across any links that look like a long list of random characters, you will need to use https://www.base64encode.org/ to translate them to plain text.

What determines performance? Mainly Single and multi-thread CPU performance and Graphics Card VRAM amount. I get a decent 40fps+ experience using a Ryzen 5 3600 (12 threads) and RTX 3050 (graphics card is not THAT important though) and you can probably eke out 30-40 fps on older/worse hardware. Just don't expect solid 60fps without something better than I have.

Good general source of links and info: https://rentry.org/128bb

I'm going to skip some of the basic setup stuff, but you will need to get a prod.keys file. 128 Bit Bay has some of the basics you will need. Check out the "protecting yourself during piracy" guide, but you will want a VPN active while you are torrenting nowadays, as well as a good ad blocker extension.

Download Yuzu (or Ryujinx): https://yuzu-emu.org/downloads/ https://github.com/pineappleEA/pineapple-src/releases. Keep in mind you cannot ask official Yuzu channels for support on Pineapple builds because they are an unofficial source. However, EA/pineapple builds can offer significant performance improvements. They only provide support for EA builds (subscribe to their patreon) or the main build (free). Also, do not discuss piracy on the official Yuzu subreddit or their discord. This will jeopardize their ability to continue operating at all, ruining Switch emulation for everyone! If anyone asks, you dumped the game and keys from a soft modded Switch running cfw.

Download prod.keys or dump them from switch: https://github.com/Abd-007/Switch-Emulators-Guide/blob/main/Yuzu.md#keys Follow the guide to install them in your yuzu folder.

Download or dump ToTK NSP or XCI file: I usually use the Yandex search engine as they rarely/never censor piracy links. 128bitbay above has some links to Roms as well. Point Yuzu to the folder where you keep Switch game files. Then, install the update file to NAND (should end in .nsp). The current version is 1.1.2 with the best performance, but 1.1.1 has the "Y+B" dupe glitch.

OK, here's the fun part. Mods! https://github.com/HolographicWings/TOTK-Mods-collection Easiest source of general-purpose mods. Click on releases on the right-hand side to go to the download page. Choose the version matching your game update. The page linked has descriptions of each mod. I personally use:

-720p Cheat method - Turn the resolution scaling to 2x in settings and you've got 1400p which is my monitor size. 60 FPS Static - Required for DynamicFPS to go higher than 30fps, or you can target 30fps by using the 30fps static mod + DynamicFPS. Alternatively, you can just use FPS++ without the static fps mod, they do the same thing but YMMV -Island Fix -LOD Improvement -Shadows 1024x -Anisotropic Filtering Fix -Disable Internal FSR Downscaling -UI Blackscreen Fix OR one of the controller UI mods which include it

Mods I use not on HolographicWings Github: Serfrost's Defogger: https://gamebanana.com/mods/446995 Removes fog from nearby if that bothers you. Some people prefer to keep it, but I like the added clarity. See also: Better Fog mod on nexusmods

TotK Camera photo/jpeg quality increase mod: https://www.reddit.com/user/ChucksFeedAndSeed/comments/142cgde/totk_camera_photojpeg_quality_increase_mod_v112/

Other general ToTK Mod sources: GameBanana Nexus Mods SomeRandomPeople Gbatemp thread (GBATemp is a great forum for emulation talk) Chuck's Feed and Seed, prolific mod creator TheBoy181 Prolific mod creator/remixer. Got a lot of undeserved hate because he paywalls a few of his mods, but he has HUNDREDS of great mods for other games completely free on GitHub. For example, I got an actually playable experience on Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity using his mods.

Recommended Yuzu settings: https://github.com/HolographicWings/TOTK-Mods-collection/blob/main/SETUP.md#gh-dark-mode-only Take note of the ASTC Recompression setting. You will need it if you have less than 8 GB of VRAM, especially if you are targeting a high resolution.

Yuzu Vulkan Shaders download: aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubWVkaWFmaXJlLmNvbS9maWxlL24xdmpydzRoMWgxNTg2cC8wMTAwZjJjMDExNWI2MDAwLjd6L2ZpbGU= Put vulkan.bin in your TOTK shader pipeline cache folder. If it causes problems, you can clear the pipeline cache and make your own, but you will have some stuttering at first. Sharing shaders is piracy, FYI so don't talk about it on yuzu channels.

128BitBay's subreddit r/NewYuzuPiracy removed for ban evasion

r/128bitbay remains, as well as their rentry.org page. But for a brief, glorious moment, thousands of people shared tips for how to get Tears of the Kingdom running smoothly!

Edit: Come to think of it, I could probably do a quick roundup post of relevant links to mods for TOTK emulation on Lemmy. I'll do that later.
