Looking for an ebook reader (hardware) which doesn't hold a proprietary OS
  • Kobo readers are really neat, I've been using them for over a decade and I don't remember ever using a Rakuten account or even going online with them for anything but software updates or connecting to my local library system (which Kindle can't do). I use Calibre on the desktop to manage, convert and load my reader and that's it.

  • Sound Off: How many 10+ year redditors have left the site?
  • 12+ years user, I nuked all my accounts when the 3rd party apps died. I still follow a few subs that have no replacement yet.

Those events right before summer reddit ensure its a smoldering pile of rotting compost.

  • Poilievre calls Niagara Falls home 'tiny little shack,' apologizes to tenant
  • Damn right, the real-estate bubble got started under Harper and kept going steadily under Trudeau, probably because so many politicians are also landlords or in cahoots with developers/investors (including the NDP).

Canada is eyes-deep into the "fuck you, I got mine" nightmare mentality across the entire political spectrum.

  • Which gadget makes your life better?
  • My Instant Pot. I'm the cook at home and it saves me so much time and food comes out so good I barely use my stovetop anymore. Same with the air fryer. Between both kitchen gadgets, I can make a tremendous meal for 4 in 30 minutes. It has saved me weeks!

  • Question: People who still frequent Reddit, has it gone back to business as usual or are the protests still having effect?
  • What sucks is there's still a few very good subs with big communities that don't seem to be moving to the fediverse, which is still too geeky for a lot of people. However, now that Reddit is banning active members and moderators, it's a matter of weeks until the whole thing turns into 4chan-on-a-bad-day. At this rate we'll all get back to usenet by 2024.

  • Question: People who still frequent Reddit, has it gone back to business as usual or are the protests still having effect?
  • Reddit has made it easy now that my mobile apps are gone. Also, my main account got permananned on Tuesday apparently out of comment posted 5 years ago about spez. Also, a niche sub I followed was taken over by a Nazi when the historical mod got kicked out by reddit and now that's gone too.

Reddit has slipped into being irrelevant very quickly.

  • Doug Ford wants alcohol in convenience stores
  • I know that from official data and having lived there. Restrictions are a catalyst for excessive use. Those restrictions have been around for quite some time and generally haven't made things any better. Those who want to drink will drink, regardless of how many assholes are between them and the liquor store.

This points to other socioeconomic causes for alcoholism. Any prohibition or restriction is just punishing the victims further.

  • Doug Ford wants alcohol in convenience stores
  • I've been to Australia and booze was very easy to get by, there's even drive-thru booze stores there. They are however extremely strict on under-age sales of booze and tobacco and that's a great thing in my opinion - the store gets shut down if caught.
