What are some open source games you can recommend for Linux?
  • +1 for Minetest both client and server too; we run one locally for the kiddos :)

  • WIP - Diaominos is a roll-n-write featuring a 2x2 puzzle cube

    Diaominos

This game is my latest design project and has entered its initial playtesting phase. Below is the initial theme along with links to the files for any interesting in giving it a try.

    Overview

Engineers have created equipment capable of crushing carbon into pure diamond over a 2-step process. You've acquired the tools and raw materials necessary to take advantage of this new technology.

To capitalize on this opportunity you must create specific diamond shapes before your rivals flood the market. The first production step generates polyomino shaped clusters with traces of diamond. Carefully align your clusters as you load them for the second step to generate the most in-demand shapes.

    Mechanics

The game consists of a puzzle cube, game board and player sheets. The cube is scrambled once at the start of the game and then rotated between rounds along the game board. What makes this special is the path taken on the board which causes each surface of the cube to face up once per game as well as face each player once per game.

    !

This movement of the cube and the colors facing the players is what drives the player actions. The game uses 3D polyominos to fill a grid that is 5x5x4 for a total of 100 spaces and over the course of the game all 100 will get filled with enough planning. The upper surface of the cube causes some polyominos to gain special "diamond" spaces and players are trying to place those into the larger grid such that they create a polyomino within the grid consisting entirely of diamonds.

    Files

Rules are very early without examples or illustrations so fair warning :D

Proton Drive is finally becoming a viable alternative to Google Drive
  • Yep, this is what I've started doing and actually works better for my work flow as I use Wireguard for work related tasks as well.

  • Best way to learn a new game?
  • This is near exactly me; only difference is that I do not play things out ahead of time.

    1. Watch video (Watch It Played)
    2. Read rulebook
    3. Play with group

  • Starting my selfhosted journey
  • I'm currently self hosting:

    • Jellyfin: TV shows for kiddos
    • Minetest: gaming with kiddos
    • Supertuxkart: more gaming with kiddos
    • Pi-hole: DNS with several filters
    • Tiny Tiny RSS: feed reader
    • Nextcloud: phone sync and project management
    • Gitea: code tracking and version control
    • JSketcher: CAD drawing
    • Stable Diffusion: AI art

The last two are local-network only and the most recent additions; still just tinkering with them at this point.

My favorite of the list is probably TT-RSS which I use for podcasts and to keep tabs on a few sub-reddits I had participated in before moving to Lemmy.

  • Cool concept! And congrats on getting it up and running :)

  • Please recommend an ergonomic mechanical keyboard
  • Thanks; quite a few have recommended this one which is nice to see

  • Please recommend an ergonomic mechanical keyboard
  • Fantastic; thank you :)

  • Please recommend an ergonomic mechanical keyboard
  • Very cool design; how well do they stay put on the desk? My last split keyboard would nudge slowly during use and had to be moved back which I found annoying.

  • The Advantage 2 looks pretty good; bit pricey though I expected as much. Thank you!

  • Please recommend an ergonomic mechanical keyboard

I'm looking to replace my Logitech Wave with an ergonomic mechanical keyboard and would appreciate any recommendations from the community here.

Prefer cherry brown or red switches and a single piece design (not a fan of the 2-piece keyboards). Also prefer a number pad though not required as I can always add one separately if needed.

  • Yeah, bigger solutions like Azure, AWS, etc. have some cool features especially for scaling but... that comes with its own headaches.

For earlier stages I personally much prefer a simple VPS where I can freely do what I want with it including total wipes, snapshots / rollbacks, etc.

  • If you're comfortable working on a local VM then perhaps a VPS such as Linode or Digital Ocean would be a good place to start; they're essentially VMs hosted in cloud you have total control of so you can install whatever you want just like a local VM. Even the cheapest VPS option is plenty for this sort of testing.

These have free trials too such as: https://www.linode.com/tux

  • What do you call beehaw users?
  • My fav so far is beeple

  • Do you currently use Linux, or would you consider giving Linux a shot?
  • Yep, tried several distributions and ultimately landed on Ubuntu for the ease of troubleshooting. I've used Linux full-time, including for work, for a few years now and at this point can't imagine wanting to switch back. Agreed that there are still some games I have to skip on for now however there are plenty now to not be a deal breaker for me.

  • LOL yep, player count is definitely a consideration :D

My favorite part is working out the mechanics of a game trying to create something new and fun. I almost always start with a mechanical idea that I think on for a long while as I piece together supporting mechanics toward a playable game and part way through that process a theme will generally emerge that aids in finalizing the mechanics.

  • My published games are Nightfall (and its expansions), World-Z League and an upcoming deckbuilder via Universal Studios that's manufacturing now.

Unpublished I have an abstract on time travel and a real-time card game about competing food trucks that I co-designed with my son-in-law.

(we have 8 kids so certainly some should take after me right? lol)

  • New moderator saying hi!
  • Howdy!

I'm a game designer and mostly play gateway games with the kiddos though also love Scythe, Terraforming Mars (lately Ares Expedition) and several others when my son-in-law is in town.

Happy to have a place to talk design here 😊

  • [Solved] Beehaw crashing after few minutes

When leaving home page up in Firefox tab after ~5 minutes the tab will crash. This started last night and initially thought a fluke however is continuing this morning. I've tried CTRL+F5 to clear cache in case some code change but that did not resolve the issue. Also checked console for error messages though did not see any. So far have not had an individual post page crash; only the home page. Any other steps I can take to help troubleshoot?

Edit: Seems to have been an issue with Firefox 114.0.1. Version 114.0.2 is available now and after updating the issue is gone.
