What's the most alarming thing you've done while drunk or high?
  • I had a similar experience with ketamine. I accidentally did a line that was a little too long and k-holed for the first time. During the trip I convinced myself I went insane and that I would have had to live the rest of my life inside the mind of an insane person, with no chance to ever experience the outside world again. But I was ok with that, I was like "well, it happened. Nothing I can do about it. I just got to roll with it now" lol. Then I snapped out of it. Never touched ketamine that weekend again, but the following week I wanted to repeat the experience.

Ketamine is not a psychedelic but a khole can make you experience stuff that maybe only DMT can. Illusion of timelessness, lack of physical dimensions, absence of linearity in time and space, it's something I've only been able to experience during my first k-holes

  • What are some underrated yet well paid jobs that one should consider and why ?
  • It's not an easy job. You're constantly moving weights (the truck lifts the garbage bin, but moving a 120 lt bin full of garbage from its spot to the truck and back is not easy either). When your friends are done with their workday, it's time for you to go to bed. You have to work with bad weather, because trash bins must be emptied no matter what. I work in the IT of the company that does the garbage collection in my area. My colleagues are not very enthusiast of their job, lol. But it's a stable job, at least. Pay is decent, but I wouldn't call it good. In other countries though, people doing the same job are getting paid better than in Italy

  • Telegram reached 5 million premium subscribers just 1 month after 4 million.
  • Yes, that was fast, but this is partly because of the introduction of channel giveaways a few months ago: channel owners can gift premium subscriptions to their subscribers, which will be randomly selected by Telegram (you don't need to opt-in). The channel will then be awarded the giveaway winners' boosts, that will let it unlock some additional features

That means that after some months, the giveaways winners will have to decide whether to renew their premium subscription or not (which was gifted to them: they might not be as interested in Telegram's premium features as paid users that decided to subscribe on their own). The current number of subscribers might be a spike caused by the novelty of giveaways. It's unlikely that the trend of gifting premium subscriptions will continue to generate this much revenue, but we will see. For sure this is a very convenient moment to decide to release some numbers on premium subscriptions ;)

  • Is breastmilk vegan?
  • !veganism@lemmy.ca is here to cater to vegans, not people who are curious about vegans and want to interrogate them about things that they could much more easily discover from the first paragraph of a Wikipedia article

Originally, this was this community's intent too. The rules in the sidebar are willingly shallow about this kind of posts because at some point we decided not to be too strict with submissions, considering that there wasn't that much activity and the mods were mostly afk . So posts like this are tolerated unless they become an omnis cicrclejerk/backpatting fest

  • What's the difference between a WebK and a WebA web app?
  • yes, https://www.telegram.org/apps lists both, but if you open web.telegram.org, you will be automatically redirected to one of the two apps without being given the choice. The differences are not listed because the two apps are supposed to offer more or less the same features, and anyway nobody's keeping track of them. As far as I know, also, the two developers are given great freedom in deciding which secondary features to implement (these webapps are not yet mature to actually replace the desktop client) so this makes keeping track of the differences a little more difficult.

You are basically not supposed to chose, choice is for those who are actively following the development of the two apps, apparently 🤷

If you want to get an idea of which client to pick, have a look at their telegram channels, they publish nice changelogs:

(also notice at the differences in the username and title format lol)

  • What's the difference between a WebK and a WebA web app?
  • Yes, they are two different apps actively developed by two different people (A source code, K source code). They are the two winners of a contest Telegram held a few years ago, but they haven't' decided which one will be the default/standard webapp yet, so you can use both. I think web.telegram.org still picks a random one for you the first time you access it

  • Is there a way to view messages you've sent?
  • I assume that by "channel" you mean "group"

On any platform, you can use the lens icon to search for messages. Once you tap/click on it, an user silhouette 👤 icon will appear. It allows to filter messages from a specific user, yourself included

If by "channel" you mean "channel", then there's no way to know which of the posts in the channel were sent by yourself, since they all appear as they were sent by the channel

If you want to see a list of all messages you've sent across all chats, then there's no way to do that unless you script something using the users API

  • How long you been on lemmy?
  • At the time I knew what the fediverse was and I was using Mastodon quite consistently, and I was waiting for a federated alternative to reddit. Raddle at the time was already a thing, but federation was not on their roadmap.

As per how I found it... here's a comment from four years ago :)

GitHub - telegramdesktop/tdx: Telegram Desktop over TDLib (fork)

This might be common knowledge by now considering how easy it is to find this repository, but it's new to me so I'll share: apparently, the desktop app developer is actively working on rewriting their app using tdlib.

Telegram Desktop would be the first official app to use tdlib. Right now, the only telegram-related app that uses it is Telegram X, which is an experimental app. The bot API, though, has always ran on tdlib since day one.

Reddit's most successful April Fools community game, /r/place, is back after 5 years

A little bit of context: 7 years ago Reddit introduced an April Fools event people could play by interacting with each other from within Reddit itself. The first event was called The Button, but the most successful one was 2017's /r/place. During the 3 days the even lasted, users could change the color of any pixel in a 1.000x1.000 canvas (with a 5 seconds cooldown). Communities from all over reddit (and beyond) organized to collaborate and draw something meaningful on the canvas, be it their community mascot, some meta joke, or anything else really. I personally participated in the game, and it was one of the funniest community-based events I've been able to experience online.

Apparently, after 5 years, they decided to bring /r/place back. I'm posting this because I was thinking that, as the Lemmy community, we could organize to draw a lemmur on the canvas :)

I wonder if other communities in the Fediverse are going to organize and put some effort into it btw, if anyone knows anything about it it would be cool to gather a list of communities who are going to participate to represent the Fediverse in the game

Telegram "officially" introduces its own ads platform to operate advertising in public channels
    t.me Павел Дуров

Канал для русскоязычной аудитории. Основной канал, который я обновляю чаще, – англоязычный @durov

    Павел Дуров

Durov introduces Telegram's take on ads in his Russian channel.

The translated channel post (translated with DeepL):

    > Soon, official advertising messages will appear in Telegram channels for the first time. Most users will hardly notice this change - for three reasons: > > 1. Telegram will not show advertising messages in chat lists, private conversations, or groups. The ads will only affect large channels - services where there are already ads and whose support results in the largest expenditures on the part of Telegram. > > 2. No personal information will be used to show ads. User privacy is paramount to Telegram. The content of advertising messages will depend only on the topics of the channels in which they are displayed, and not on users' personal data. > > 3. Official Telegram advertising messages will be unobtrusive. Only short texts without external links or photos will be allowed in them. An advertisement may appear only after all new messages in the channel have been viewed. > > Ads posted by Telegram channel owners themselves in the form of regular messages are now found in Telegram channels. The official advertising messages that Telegram is introducing will be much more comfortable for users. The income from such advertisements will allow Telegram to continue providing users with a free and unlimited service.

    Documentation:

As far as I know, official apps still don't support sponsored messages, but they're probably going to support them in the next version, which should be released in a couple of weeks.

This thing has not been publicized by Telegram itself yet - it has been announced just on Durov's russian personal channel
