  • I don't think you can change your lemmy instance's domain yet. Afaik there is no official way to do it. FMHY lost their domain (they are using a free domain and lost it) and was attempting to switch to a new domain for their instance and developing a tool to migrate to a new domain, but somehow decided to start fresh and discard their old data instead. No idea what happen with the migration tool they were working on (is it actually working? did they actually released the code?), so save yourself some headache and make sure to never lost your domain, which means don't use free domain because that domain isn't actually yours and can be yanked without any notice.

  • You can decide yourself if the data in that disk is more valuable than the price of a new disk to store the backup image. If it's not that valuable I guess you can one-shot it.

  • Well, it's China. How the commerce law affect you will depend heavily on who you know in the government and the party. If the new law is heavily pushed by someone important, they probably won't turn a blind eye for minor technicality. Someone up high probably got mad with their kids getting addicted with microtransactions and want to neuter it. Once that person lost interest or no longer in power, the enforcement will probably become much lenient.

  • ZFS is stable as fuck there. Perfect for running a file server.

  • Forget White Christmas, the next generation will celebrate Wet Christmas instead.

  • Dude, are you living in your company's server room?

  • If only those "think of the children" politicians would do this instead of attempting to ban encryption.

  • Rare earths... Is this why China seems to be upping their territorial dispute with Philippine? Because the seafloor on that region is supposed to be rich with rare earths?

  • Yes, it literally happened with FMHY's Lemmy instance. Lost access to the original domain, started again from scratch on a different domain, but their users didn't come back and already moved in to other instances.

  • An Nvidia RTX graphics card is required to use this mod.

  • If you're feeling adventurous, lowendtalk is quite a deep rabbit hole.

Personally, I use rsync.net for backup stuff. Way better for backup than standard vps because everything you put there is automatically snapshotted every day (you can configure how long you want to keep the snapshot). No full shell access, but you can still use rclone there.

  • They have metered bandwidth so it's not suitable for OP's bandwindth-heavy usage.

  • I agree with you. Instead of spending money to buy a smart tv and still getting ads and your data collected, I can see the appeal of paying $0 to get a smart tv riddled with ads and data collection. At least you're not paying any money for the device. I just wish the opposite is also possible where you can buy a smart tv with zero ads and data collection.

  • You're going to love this free tv then. It's free, and people has began receiving this tv since the last 3 months or so. In exchange for receiving this free tv, you'll have to make some sacrifice:

    • The tv must be connected to internet at all times within 5 days of receiving it. You aren't allowed to disconnect it (except due to brief internet outages)
    • There is a second screen on the bottom with camera that display ads. You aren't allowed to obscure the second screen to hide ads.
    • No modification allowed. You can't disconnect the second screen.
    • You aren't allowed to block ads, even with pihole.

Breaking the ToS means your credit card would get charged $1000. Very fun TV.

  • Gigantic ships burning all those extra fuel would surely accelerate climate changes even further. Everyone, make sure to leave your car and take public transport or bicycle to offset all those extra carbon /s

  • Company: You made this?

    Open Source Dev: Yes

    Company: ...

    Company: I made this.

  • After the surgery, the hospital's management apologised and paid 500 yuan ($70, £55) as compensation, according to the patient's son who spoke to local media outlets. He also said his mother is now blind in her left eye, though it is not clear whether it was due to the incident.

It's all good folks, the hospital already compensated her for the injury!
