Google Says AI Could Break Reality
  • (because "save as" isn't available on "modern" websites)

I think this is also more of a mobile issue with apps more than just websites. Like, hence why those screenshots are so often from phones. Generally one's that are more obviously from a computer are social media posts, presumedly to facilitate sharing on other platforms easier.

Because on desktop, even if a website doesn't allow it, using the dev inspector usually allows you too. I wonder if it would be possible to create an extension/userscript that automates that on hostile websites.

  • Google Says AI Could Break Reality
  • The mechanism for how it works is that as a remote instance sends in it's downvote count, Beehaw immediately drops the message without modifying the database. Part of this exchange is an expected response of the total updated downvotes. However, Beehaw sends back "0" and the remote instance knows it can't be zero, so it treats it's local count with higher validity.

Essentially, this all ends up meaning that what ssm will see is the total of all downvotes from users on their own instance, and nothing else. This might be just their own downvote, especially being on a smaller instance. But I've seen lemmy.world users be confused about it bc the count they see is say, -5. Have been told my instance obviously has them enabled 😅

Remote instances don't communicate their vote tally's with each other for a third instance's post.

  • Bazzite is exclusively KDE, and I honestly don't think it's possible to run a different desktop manager on it.

Edit: Sorry, my mistake, there's the option for GNOME as well. But I don't think they recommend even switching between them on an install.

  • Block rule
  • There's always Bazzite's vanilla KDE cousin, Aurora: https://getaurora.dev/ It is essentially the Fedora KDE spin with way better hardware support and QoL features.

But Bazzite isn't really a distro in it's own right anyway, it's an unofficial Fedora spin that gets updates pretty much immediately (<24hrs) from upstream. It kind of "solves" a lot of the issues with most gaming distros.

I'd highly recommend both to new users as well, as they are immutable (like the Fedora Atomic Desktops) and make it a lot harder to completely mess up your install while you're still learning.

  • Custom Linux Distribution just for Gaming
  • Yeah, based off the atomic desktop versions, as it's immutable.

  • You invoked the comparison by using the phrase "today's parents are too IT ignorant". If anything, they know more about tech than ever before.

Edit: In response to the rest. Parents just don't want to have uncomfortable conversations with their kids, they never have. Because, no, it isn't actually easy to block all pornographic websites reliably.

  • Hack of Age Verification Company Shows Privacy Danger of Social Media Laws
  • Yes. What is your point? I was commenting on the fact you thought this was a current parents problem when it's been a problem for over 20 years now.

  • Hack of Age Verification Company Shows Privacy Danger of Social Media Laws
  • I don't know what you lived through, but there was wider internet access in the late 90s and early 00s that caused widespread panic amongst the boomers when I was a kid (born early 90s). I grew up in the era of the first social networks, MySpace being the biggest early one I remember. What surprises me more is that so many millennials have grown up to be just like their parents in that regard.

  • Custom Linux Distribution just for Gaming
  • The thing is, Bazzite isn't really a distro in it's own right, which they admit themselves. It is essentially Fedora with a bit extra on top, and it gets all the updates Fedora does at the same time. It seems like they're trying to "solve" some of the issues with other gaming distros. As far as pre-installed software, it comes with Steam and Lutris pre-installed. Sure, there are some linux gamers out there that don't need those, but the vast majority will use them. Apart from those, it has the graphics drivers pre-installed for your system, based off your iso choice. Everything else is installed by choice through a first-boot wizard.

  • Todays parents? No. The Boomer/Gen X parents of Millennials were also incredibly IT ignorant.

  • People doing the 30 days linux Challenge are having several problems because of Mint's old packages and technology. Why people still recommend it when there is Fedora and Opensuse with KDE and Gnome?
  • Right, that was the other point I meant to make. There absolutely is a way to seperate the powers that sudo grants. The sudoers file allows you to limit a user or groups permissions to only certain commands. Distros could and should absolutely take advantage of this.

  • People doing the 30 days linux Challenge are having several problems because of Mint's old packages and technology. Why people still recommend it when there is Fedora and Opensuse with KDE and Gnome?
  • Well, no, not exactly. Most accounts on desktop linux distros are admin accounts. The way I would define that is whether or not the user has sudo permissions, either by being in the sudo group or sudoers file. Some distros do ask if you want the user to be admin. And that's pretty analagous to being admin on windows and getting a UAC prompt for an elevated process.

  • People doing the 30 days linux Challenge are having several problems because of Mint's old packages and technology. Why people still recommend it when there is Fedora and Opensuse with KDE and Gnome?
  • Yeah, I think they're based off the fedora atomic desktops of Silverblue and Kinoite respectively which are gnome and kde based. They do angle Bluefin as more workstation oriented, for what it's worth.

  • People doing the 30 days linux Challenge are having several problems because of Mint's old packages and technology. Why people still recommend it when there is Fedora and Opensuse with KDE and Gnome?
  • If you want a non-gaming alternative to Bazzite to recommend, there's it's two universal blue siblings, Aurora (general purpose desktop) and Bluefin (silverblue/workstation distro). They both have the same setup as Bazzite but without the explicitly gaming elements. https://universal-blue.org/

  • This feels like an overreach by the lemmy.world admin...

I was banned from lemmy.world for “personal attacks” for 3 days because of calling someone a “piece of shit” after they called me a “cunt”. The comment calling me a cunt wasn’t removed and the user hasn’t been punished at all by the lemmy.world admins.

    The comments in question:

    Lemmy.world modlog:

    ! !

In the interest of full disclosure, this is my other comment that was removed:

    !

And here’s the comment of that user I was referencing, in the Blahaj modlog after it was removed:

    !

This feels like an overreach, especially when the admin clearly didn’t feel it was important to punish their own user for “personal attacks” in the same thread.

    [Bug] App Icons

Hey friends, I see you just pushed another test flight build, cheers for all the new updates. However, I just tried changing the App Icon and it doesn’t work at all, just stays on the default one. I tried a bunch to see if it was just one of them glitching out, but none of them work.

    [Bug/Feature Request] Hide Downvote Button

I’m on an instance that has downvotes disabled, and I’m wondering if we could add an option to hide the downvote button from the UI when the signed in instance has it disabled. I’ve changed the swipe so it doesn’t have the downvote, but it still shows up in the feed.

As well it could be nice to have a setting for an alternate to the downvote swipe so that auto-changes depending on instance as well.

    [Feature Request/Bug] Downvote Button

I’m on a server that has downvotes disabled. I’m wondering if we can get an update that hides the downvote button/slide when it’s disabled? I accidentally press it 2-3 times per day and the error dialogue can be frustrating. I was thinking there could be an option for what to replace the ‘slide right to downvote’ shortcut with when it’s hidden. Such as share or copy link.

    [request] Local Instance Link Setting

So at the moment, when you share a post, you get a link to the post on the instance the communities on. Obviously, you aren’t always sharing links with people that are also on your instance, so this behaviour is usually fine. But I have a few friends on my local instance, so it would be nice to be able to link them directly. Maybe having the options be Local/Remote/Ask, with a little options list each time if people want that.

I got this tattoo for myself the day I was diagnosed with MAIS

It's a personal mash-up of the Agender, Intersex and Transgender symbols, and a little bit of inspiration from dog desexing tattoos. I'd been questioning since late puberty if I might be Intersex, I never grew an Adam's apple and hardly any body hair despite family genetics. I came out as trans femme non-binary in my early 20s, but it wasn't until the third doctor I saw for hormones that questioned if I might have an intersex condition. The first doctor I saw never questioned that my T was well below the male range because I wanted to start HRT anyway. But he also still put me on T-blockers which have some awful side-effects, including dropping my T to completely zero. Thankfully I'm off those these days and estrogen alone keeps my T where it needs to be.

The last test that she ran was for sterility, so the day I got that result was when I got my official diagnosis. I'd never really wanted kids of my own, and didn't worry when starting HRT, but it still really shook me to learn that I'm not able too. Hence, I dropped into my local tattoo parlour with a rough sketch, because the adrenaline and pain from that helped me deal with my emotions in a more healthy way.

Anyway, hi, I'm Norah and that's my story :)

I'm cross-posting this here as I thought this community might find it interesting as well. I think the way I procured it also leads to a bigger discussion about the preservation of queer film & media. I think it's important, now more than ever, for younger and freshly realised queer people to see that we've been here and fighting for our rights for a really long. Videos like this one feel like they evoke a more visceral connection to that past.

Retro Lemmy BBS in Windows Terminal

So the how-to I promised in my last post:

    1. Install the neonmodem package under your default WSL distro. I'm using Debian. You've got to move the executable to your /bin/ folder.
    2. Go to your Windows Terminal settings and click on 'Add a new profile'. Duplicate your default profile.
    3. Rename the profile to 'Neon Modem Overdrive'. You can download the favicon from https://neonmodem.com/favicon.png
    4. Under 'Command line' you want to change it to show as below. This will launch it within it's own tab, and will close out when you quit NMO. C:\Windows\system32\wsl.exe ~ --shell-type login neonmodem
    5. Under 'Additional settings' at the bottom, click on 'Appearance'.
    6. I'm using the 'Vintage' colour scheme, and have the 'Retro terminal effects' setting enabled for those crispy old scanline vibes.

    Neon Modem Overdrive in WSL

I spent this evening playing with Neon Modem Overdrive and ended up getting it set up as it's own profile in Windows Terminal. That way I could give it it's own profile, including the retro screen effect. Will comment tomorrow with a guide :)

    Tab Bar looks great

I’m not sure if my feedback in my last post made a huge difference, but thank you for implementing stuff like the small red dot for inbox and changing things up. I like the new inbox icon a lot, and thank you for the setting to toggle off the username. Just updated to the latest build and the avatar in the tab bar looks great!
