Will there really be a big influx of users on the 30th?
  • I'm on here obviously, but still using Reddit until Relay croaks. After that I'm not going to violently l completely quit reddit but without being able to use Relay I'll be using it a lot less, not as a regular contributor. It'll be like how often I use Facebook now compared to how I used it a few years ago.

  • If you were about to Time Travel and you couldn't stop it. The magic portal has already opened and is sucking you in; But you could choose an era to end up in. Where would you go and why?
  • I think I'd go paleolithic. Pre-agricultural, on the move finding food, being in nature. It'd be dicey obviously but like whatever, if you die you die. I feel like the physical activity, adrenaline, living in community, being in nature... Would just be nice. I feel like I probably wouldn't be depressed anymore eventually. Like who would have the time?

Also damn can you imagine seeing like 4000 lb armadillos and shit? Living among a bunch of now-extinct megafauna seems like it would be both thrilling and terrifying. Honestly I'd probably die by trying to Disney princess with a twelve foot tall deer or some shit.

  • What are the best crafts/meida/things to make and sell? as a sort of hobby.
  • I'll reiterate what other folks have said about it not being a huge moneymaker. I sell my art and basically make enough to cover my art supplies to do the things I love (plus the validation of people wanting my art lol). But if you're going into it even looking to make beer money you might be disappointed. Especially because while you figure out what the market is looking for you'll probably spend a good deal of money with no returns.

Make what you want to make, sell it if you want to and people want to buy it.

I will say, online selling is incredibly oversaturated and hard to do. Sites like Etsy are now filled with instant garbage drop shipped from Aliexpress so it can be hard for people to actually find your stuff. Making your own website costs money and may require skills you don't have (but could learn!) Look for local art markets in your area instead. People come to those things looking to shop, specifically looking to shop local. It might be harder if you're not in an urban area, but where I live is filled with them.

    Drawing water in Procreate tutorial

🌊 the crux of water in a pool like this is the shiny reflections on the surface: create this by using a rounded diamond shape!
🌊 fit the diamonds together like bricks, and be loose about it - if they’re too same-y, they won’t feel natural, and pack them together tightly, with only a small gap at the corners
🌊 pro-tip: if you’re drawing from an aerial view, the shapes will all be about the same size and width, but if your drawing goes back in space like mine, they should get slightly bigger and more open toward the bottom and thinner/smaller toward the top (you can draw them that way from the start, or use the distort transformation tool to add depth after the fact)
🌊 fill in all the corner gaps (color drop makes this so easy: just fill one, then tap the “continue filling” option that pops up at the top of the screen💪🏻
🌊 once you’ve got this basic setup, spend a little time cleaning up these reflections - the corners should be the biggest areas of white, and then in between, the white lines should get pretty thin to give it that delicate, watery look
🌊 you’re almost there! simply duplicate this layer and fill it with a darker blue, then offset it from the original a big gap - this creates the shadows on the bottom of the pool! you will probably need to go in and redraw a few areas at the top, but that’s easy - they don’t have to match exactly because no one is looking *that* closely 😅

I found this so easy and it's a great result! Perfect for summery pieces :)

YSK that journaling can be an incredible tool for maintaining your mental health and brainstorming ideas
  • This is all so important and insightful. You wrote it up in a way that is so clear about the value of journaling. I really need to get back into the habit of it.

My initial fight with depression has been over for many years now, but I kept journaling. It helped me lose weight, get into shape, set my own goals and start new hobbies even.

Journaling was the first time I said "out loud" that I wanted to start a small business, and... I have. It was something I'd wanted to do for years and years and years and just never did, because I didn't believe I could. Getting it out of my head and exploring the why and how made such a difference.

I want to say this: I know that among science-minded people, it's common to dismiss (and mock people who use) tarot cards. "It's just random, drawing a card doesn't tell your future" (followed with the sometimes implied, sometimes said aloud: "you dumbass").

I journal in the way that you describe here OP but it can be really hard for me to get started and make it a habit. So, I often journal by using tarot. The cards don't "tell my future," I know that. But they serve as a journaling prompt that is really helpful for reflection. Does this describe me? Do I want it to? What can I do to achieve/change it? Also... they're pretty. It's nice.

Related: astrology is good for this too! Another often mocked practice. We're in the new moon in the sign Gemini yesterday/tonight. "New moons are symbolic moments of new beginnings. With a new moon in the air sign of Gemini, our mindset, ideas, opinions, what we’re curious about, and the way we communicate with others all hit the cosmic refresh button." Hmm... sounds like a pretty good prompt for journaling and reflection, huh??

If you want to start journaling, but you're having trouble getting started, and it won't make you feel self-consciously woo-woo... give it a try. Tarot and astrology don't tell your future – they can help you write it. 🌑✨

  • Growing up with undiagnosed ADHD starter pack
  • I started meds after I had COVID and was already experiencing long term symptoms (brain fog but also fatigue). So I do feel less foggy after starting meds but I also still have more memory problems than I used to pre-COVID. I also have had increased brain fog lately because I'm tapering off a different need and have had brutal withdrawal from it. I just don't think I can tease apart what's coming from where.

what is the vibe/goal of this community?

On reddit, stopdrinking seems to be a support network for people who are in the process of quitting drinking, and for folks seeking and giving support for maintaining sobriety. Is that the same goal of this community here?

Something I never found on reddit was a sub for alcohol-free living that was not a support sub – a place for memes, jokes, mocktail recipes, more silly/casual gripes.

What do folks here think about a community like that on Lemmy? I wouldn't want to overly fragment an alcohol-free community, but also wouldn't want to use a support sub for that kind of content.

LPT: Whenever you see a non-skippable ad, close your eyes and mute your device.
  • May I also recommend adding deep breathing? A 30 second ad gives you time for two or three deep inhale-hold-exhales.

Man though the Black Mirror nightmare scenario of devices being able to tell when you close your eyes or look away and the ad stops until you're looking. Let's hope we don't get there in real life any time soon.

  • ADHD meds are suspiciously over-prescribed.
  • I do think that ADHD is somewhat incompatible with capitalism, tbh. Or at the very least, a typical office job where days are very samey. ADHD hyperfocus seems like something that would have been real useful in pre-agricultural society. Tracking an animal to kill because everyone is starving is like, the ultimate "oh shit this is due tomorrow let's GO!" Feeling urgency on probably very little sleep, yet thriving because it makes brain go brr brr lol.

I think it's okay for people to make their own choices with their doctors about whether they want to try to manage their symptoms with medication, though.

  • I've spent all day with a headache, nausea, and dizziness

For the past several months I've been slowly tapering off an SNRI with terrible withdrawal. If I ever forgot a dose, I spent the next day with a pounding headache, unable to stand up, feeling like I was going to vom. As I've been tapering, every time I drop the dosage it's the same symptoms, but to a u slightly lesser degree.

    It's been... not fun.

And then I remember that I used to feel like this almost every Saturday and Sunday because of my binge drinking/alcohol abuse.

I quit using alcohol over three years ago. I'm really proud of myself, and grateful to (usually) feel better in my body these days.

    Show us your altar!

Here's mine, tightly packed into one half of a cubby of an IKEA expedit shelf 😅 (rowhome problems)

I think my favorite thing in there is the aaaaaa possum flag that a sweet friend of mine gave me. Really sums things up in the world lol

PSA if you have more than one language set in your phone settings

I have English set as the primary language in my phone settings, but Spanish set as an additional one so I can swipe type in it – estoy probiendo practicar más lol. When I visited Lemmy the interface kept defaulting to Spanish for whatever reason.

Anyway after making my account I was able to change the language in my Lemmy account settings from "browser default" to English without having to delete the secondary language on my phone. Not sure why this is the only site that thinks Spanish is my default!

(Chrome, Android 13, Google Pixel 7 if anyone is curious.)
