USA presidential candidates
  • Said by a man who ran a country that outlawed all but the party he was prime minister of. He was probably a little salty about criticism over the lack of democracy in his country.

  • Why do some Americans get angry at other people for not speaking English?
  • Conflicts over language have been tied to other conflicts (political, cultural, war) for a very long time. Cultural genocide against indigenous people has targeted indigenous language use among young people. Many people in India have objected to the establishment of Hindi as a UN language because they fear it will advance the extinction of their own language. I'm not saying some Replacement Theory bigot kvetching because someone dared speak a language besides English is equivalent. It's more that language does have a special place in culture in a way that is very common.

  • Anon thinks about Google
  • I like that Google supplies repair parts straight to iFixit back to the Pixel 2. It would be nice if it didn't require melting glue to get to half of the components, but hey, baby steps. And the latest models out finally have a decently long support period for security updates.

  • How useless are dating apps?
  • I used OkCupid for some dates before I found my now husband. It took quite a few dates on my side, but I just considered that par for the course. For him, I was his first date on OkCupid. For that matter, I was the first man that he dated, though he had dated a girl in high school.

Unfortunately, in the decade since we've met, I think both straight and gay oriented dating apps have probably taken a turn for the worse. We both had extensive, descriptive profiles and talked for a long time before meeting up. I keep hearing that the gay apps have turned into mostly hookup apps, but I can't speak for straight apps.

  • Why do some Americans get angry at other people for not speaking English?
  • It can be easy to forget about the rest of the world from a linguistically viewpoint. You can go over 4,300 miles from the tip of Florida to Wainwright, Alaska and never leave a predominantly English speaking region. Then worldwide, English has a billion second language speakers, so many places will have someone around who speaks English.

  • Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman
  • I wasn't able to get a good read on it either. I didn't spot anything obviously wrong from a technical standpoint, but I'm not a systems developer. It just doesn't have much that distinguishes it on a non-technical level. The design is neat, but other OS projects like Redox have shot past it in a shorter period of time. That tells me something's broken, whether it's technical or social.

  • Help Mozilla uncover Firefox 3rd party installer by joining our campaign
  • Why not? This seems to be aimed at scammers who could be injecting who knows what into the binaries and other third builds that may have grown stale over time. It's obviously not aimed at well maintained forks like LibreWolf.

  • Germany's autobahn bridges falling apart
  • China also had a couple of twists. At least parts of the West have general counterparts to these problems.

Some cities had infrastructure built out ahead of demand. Many of the cities did start filling up with people, which is great. However, the infrastructure aged well ahead of when it was used. So some of the infrastructure is coming due for expensive maintenance, often without a solid tax structure to pay for it. Readers of Strong Towns will recognize this general pattern of overbuilding without building a solid foundation, but it just has a Chinese character to it.

Linked to that is a growing debt crisis at the local government level. The most current estimate I could find is 94 trillion yen (US$13 trillion). Many infrastructure investments were made that are projected to never be paid off in their lifespan. Again, Strong Town readers will recognize this general pattern.

Going from pure speculation, I wonder whether they might have been able to avoid some of the problems with aging unused infrastructure by setting aside land and right-of-way. Here in Portland, when they were planning the I-205 freeway, one concession to transit and bike advocates was to set aside a right-of-way for a transit way and a bike path. That particular concession was made around 1975. The bike path was built immediately. The northern end was used to extend the preexisting light rail to the airport on September 10, 2001 (great timing) as part of the Red Line. The southern end became part of the Green Line later.

  • China tells US it would prevail in a Taiwan conflict without using nukes
  • Those problems would absolutely apply. And moving equipment has never been a problem in Ukraine, it has been getting permission from a fickle Congress and training Ukrainian with gear they are not familiar with.

  • China tells US it would prevail in a Taiwan conflict without using nukes
  • The simulated conflicts are run against an adversary that is perfect. No logistic errors, no maintenance issues, no communication issues, no human error. They are a teaching tool, not a crystal ball. In reality, in the event of a conflict there are plenty of areas where China would struggle.

  • *insert "bomb them" sound effect*
  • Every single person on the planet is aware of climate change

I'm still trying to get my husband's uncle to get off his easy out of "well I guess it's happening, but humans didn't cause it." He, along with a lot of other people, are in an echo chamber. Obviously plopping pigment on monuments isn't going to do shit to convince them, but I don't know what will.

  • Meetings vs productivity
  • In my previous job, I was asked to break focus every 15 minutes to check my email and see if one of my coworkers was falling behind on dealing with a queue of tasks, then pitch in if he was. I hated the job in general, but that in particular just ruined any possibility of productivity. Hard for anyone, near impossible for someone with ADHD. Then I got blamed for falling behind on my work. And for being disorganized (we didn't have a ticket tracker, hmmm).

  • Iran set to dramatically increase uranium enrichment
  • Putin, as part of the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, said that if any countries tried to stop Russia, they would face "such consequences that you have never encountered in your history". It's hard to take that two ways.

Also, much of the point isn't who has threatened to use them. The more nuclear weapons material floating around, the more chance that it lands in the hands of someone with no compunctions about actually using it. The Doomsday Clock gets closer to midnight every time another country gets nukes.

  • Vegan sandwich protein

I'm looking for a vegan sandwich protein recipe that is more of a whole food than the highly processed food that is often found in stores. So far, I'm going to try out lentil patties. I figure I can freeze a batch and stick them in the air fryer as needed. Any other ideas?

    Call for moderators

The mod team could use one or two more people. I joined a couple of years ago more as a caretaker for the space than someone with a passionate interest in building a community. Now that Lemmy is maturing, it's my hope to be replaced by someone who is willing to spend the time that it takes.

    Crossposting encouraged to !feminism@beehaw.org

tl;dr: Please crosspost to our sister community !feminism@beehaw.org

This is a followup to the previous post locking the community and redirecting to the more active community at !feminism@beehaw.org. As several of the comments pointed out, beehaw has defederated with at least one popular Lemmy instance, lemmy.world. That would warrant keeping this community, the second largest feminism community by subscribers, open so that there is a feminism community on a general purpose instance.

However, we're still concerned with the low traffic here. The responses to the previous announcement post represent about half the comments from the past year. To facilitate growth, both !feminism@beehaw.org and this community are asking our members to crosspost to both communities.

    Feminism - Beehaw

The !feminism@beehaw.org community has long since become the largest Lemmy community. In acknowledgement of that, I have decided in consultation with @Gaywallet@beehaw.org to lock this community and redirect.

Personally, I am male and only took on the mod post to make sure Lemmy had a feminism community in the early days of Lemmy, so I'm happy to cede the title to a more vibrant community. If someone wishes to attempt to revive the lemmy.ml community, please get in contact.

    Uplifting Green News?

A lot of news that comes out about the environment, climate change, and the like is very dispiriting. Has anyone seen a Lemmy community geared towards uplifting stories in the area? Species that are recovering, rivers that are being cleaned up, microbes being developed to eat plastic, that sort of thing.
