  • Ask HN: Do companies hire Principal and Staff level engineers from job postings?
  • Hiring manager here. It totally depends on the culture of the company. We do not post JDs like you describe. If anything I aim wider with minimum requirements and hope for more skills. I don’t screen incoming resumes, I have people who do that for a living (note: not software). Resumes and cover letters that get past some initial screening I most definitely read. If you include a cover letter, best to use it to augment some angle that may not be apparent reading your resume. I do set aside some promising candidates that don’t fit the immediate job and I have hired these people for other ones.

AirPods Adapter for Anker 313 Wireless Charger Stand

I have a few Anker 313 wireless charging stands around the house. They work great with iPhones. Due to the design, they can't charge an AirPods case without an adapter to lift the case to the right spot. That is the purpose of this model. I don't have the old style non-Pro AirPods, but this will probably also work with that wireless charging case. It prints well with 10% infill PLA.

    Pellet Stove Cleaning Brush

I own a pellet stove that has a heat exchanger with extra long cast iron “fingers” (see photo). This needs to be cleaned regularly. The challenge is, a standard brush attachment's bristles are too short to do this properly. This vacuum attachment solves that problem. It fits a Loveless ash vacuum but should also fit other ash vacuums as the hose size is pretty standard. Print this in PETG for strength.

The resulting print is designed to accept a length of bristles cut from a CNC dust shoe brush with 70 - 100mm bristles (choose whatever you need). One of those is enough to make several brushes. I used a small amount of urethane glue to attach the bristles (mist lightly with water first).

  • I did that spontaneously almost a decade ago. Alcohol is overrated and I do regret the decision. If one misses the flavor or other aspects, be advised there are now many excellent non-alcoholic drinks available (beer, wine, and even liquor approximations). Increasingly, I'm finding them available at restaurants and bars.

  • Apps that shouldn't be Subscriptions
  • I generally hate them in consumer-targeted apps. Theoretically, there's nothing wrong with the model. Devs have to keep the lights on, especially if there is a cloud service behind the app. It's all about what pricing model they set. However, pricing is hard. A lot of companies really screw this up right at the start. I also think a lot of businesses cannot resist the temptation to boil the frog and ask for more and more over time, until their pricing is way out of alignment with value delivery.

  • Ripping Podcasts
  • I think it's because privacy is less an issue with podcasts (ads don't have as many options to track) and enshitification of the experience has been on a slower roll than, say, youtube. Lately some solutions are out there in the form of commercial apps but they are limited and who knows if their biz model will survive. I'd like to see an open source solution but I haven't found one.

  • wapo.st Bad behavior at ‘Barbenheimer’ reflects a worrying trend

Drunken outbursts, public nudity and nonstop cellphone use disrupt theaters packed with "Barbenheimer" fans. Have people forgotten how to go the movies?

Recent screenings of the movies "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" have been marred by disruptive behavior from audience members. Incidents include individuals being naked in the theater, drunken outbursts, cellphone use, and exhibitionism. The trend of unruly behavior extends beyond movie theaters, with instances of disruptions at concerts, Broadway shows, and even on airplanes. Experts suggest that a combination of recent collective traumas, cellphone culture, and a desire for constant stimulation may be contributing factors. Movie theater policies and enforcement are being relied upon to address the issue, but some argue that disruptive behavior is becoming normalized in public spaces.

My advice: get a mono laser printer. Printing is handy but relatively infrequent for a lot of people these days. If that's your use case, mono laser is the way to go. Toner does not dry out or go bad.

    Deleting Facebook Photos

Hey Privacy Community, all of the reddit craziness let me to discover Redact which really led me down a rabbit hole of deleting lots of old posts... everywhere.

Unsurprisingly, Facebook is a problem. Redact deleted lots of content for me, great, but I still have a lot of photos in my "Mobile Uploads" folder. It's not possible to delete this folder. Their Help pages say I should be be able to delete individual photos, but I promise you, that's not an option in my UI. Am I missing something? I'd appreciate any tips!
