Internet forums are disappearing because now it's all Reddit and Discord. And that's worrying.
  • Yeah everyone like "AI content flood oh noooo, AI AI AI" yet very few mention this much much bigger issue of centralized algorithmically controlled walled gardens where everyone is. That's kinda like WeChat in China. It is hard to have real democracy or freedom of information (or privacy of any sort) when only a few big corporations have the social networks all locked down. The bad thing is because of the social network effect it's extremely hard to get people to switch even if the alternatives are even better! So much momentum. We need to find out a way to be able to help distribute users because the software isn't the problem anymore and neither is infrastructure or any of the other stuff that is given the big guys advantage really. The biggest problem aside from the social network effect is monetization I suppose. Still, it's hard to even start any kind of method of monetization for alternative platforms or decentralized platforms when you can't get anybody to switch in the first place or can't get critical mass.

  • The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates
  • The only way to beat time is via simulation. We do it all the time. Otherwise you couldn't drive a car! You maybe "imagine" / "model" the environment / drivers, the physics, etc.

Without intelligence we are doomed because inaction. We had the technology but apathy and dental won, and now it's a race against entropy/time.

    Basically moonshot or die trying

  • The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates
  • And the new material science discoceries etc should really help. Given that DeepMind used GNoME to find 2.2 million new crystals, including 380,000 stable materials. That's kinda a big deal. That was November of last year. Haha people have no idea how much this could help us. We fucked up but the light is shining and we need to run fast. I'm pretty sure, short this miraculous pace of discovery and compound returns, we will/would end up in a runaway climate feedback loop. IPCC has been throwing out their best models because they don't like the implications that it is going faster than expected and the climate sensitivity may be worse than expected.

People think AI is gonna cook us? The sun would like to make a bet.

  • Humanity’s survival is still within our grasp – just. But only if we take these radical steps | David King
  • We need to stop this or it really is a given. I've been in this mindset a lot, but we gotta stop. Finally there's a tiny light at the end of the tunnel. Los of progress etc. people's egos and distrust and cynicism about others will truly be our doom should that befall us this century (haha hopefully not this decade)

  • Google is losing it
  • I don't get the doom but idk I have been watching this stuff closely for over a decade. I think it's exciting and people are having All these strange expectations out of these systems all the sudden just because they're smart. Well they were smart before any of this generative AI stuff. Also scientific breakthroughs in medicine, blind people have something that can assist them. As someone with some disabilities, and knowing a lot of people who also have disabilities, it seems to be the privilege of the healthy and comfortable to keep the status quo.

Also if we want to play that game we were so fucked by climate change already that I had no hope. Now I have a little. It's not going away so let's push for open open open free software. (And model weights)

  • Average U.S. vehicle age hits record 12.6 years as high prices force people to keep them longer
  • Yeah I mean even just go to BLS inflation calculator and put in car prices. Cars are cheap, but if federal min wage was equal to min wage in 1960 (and this is by official stats) it would be able $16 an hour. Cars are cheap, we're getting shafted on pay like hell. Hopefully tech moves so fast it just blows everything out of the water. Hopefully not literally. Hopefully not hell on the other side. Time will tell. But my backup is a shotgun to the forehead so I got my backup plan lol

  • Someone stop the ride, I want to get off
  • Most sane thing I've read in a while. Hard to make progress starting out from even worse situation. Plus people are dumb. The genocide is terrible, but geopolitics are not as simple as just swinging the nuts around.

  • Exclusive: Bernie Sanders worries young people are underestimating the threat from Trump
  • If they fuck around they're going to find out real fast. Look how long it's taken to get weed semi legal. Like we've already lived in a kinda super wealthy oligarchy. I don't think we need to fight, unless the fascists win. They don't make up nearly the majority though so we could see what happened in Brazil here, horrible but they did get a more socially minded president. But Trump never conceded and still doesn't. He's caused basically a weird cult.

  • Like ships in the night
  • Lol lazy CCP. Now that optimization is going brr that probably won't last. Lol idk maybe they don't care. If it isn't a problem why care? If it became an issue though they'd lock it down so fast lol

  • yes daddy!

    Moooroe daddy morrreeeeeemooooooorrreeeeesbbsbbbsbbbdmorerrwee
