  • I have been using KBin as my primary source of social media since the reddit shittification got serious. Dude you are doing excellent work. I am a dev myself and this is just amazing. Thank You!

The vision is sometimes more important that arbitrary deadlines. Your life your call, but I would rather be patient and have the man with the vision in charge than having kbin fragment. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for all the hard work.

  • [DISCUSSION] Would you feel comfortable using a male contraceptive medication?
  • As a concept I would welcome a safe affordable male contraceptive and would use it if appropriate.

I would say that I would definitely evaluate the option very carefully. Especially in a committed relationship. Sometimes female birth control can bring benefits beyond just birth control, along with its drawbacks. My partner suffered from severe period cramps at a point in her life, where the birth control she used suppressed that. That said, it would actually be positive to have the option of a male contraceptive in a relationship. We share the pleasure and the responsibility. In the end, the safest option with the least side effects will probably win out. If that is a male contraceptive, so be it.

Outside of a committed relationship, condoms just makes more sense. I cannot imagine taking the risks associated with sex and not taking any precautions for it. Then again, my early 20s was spent in a country and area with a high prevalence of HIV, so not taking chances is ingrained due to that. It would also depend on just active a sex life we are dealing with.

  • ✊✊✊
  • It is a good question. As far as I know Antifa does not exists as a definable organisation with a hierarchical structure. Almost like the hacker collective anonymous. The racism and exploitation of the poor and marginalized goes hand in hand with fascism, which is why the poster makes sense. Fascism needs an enemy to focus the masses on, to distruct from it inherent flaws.

  • Dungeons & Dragons tells illustrators to stop using AI to generate artwork for fantasy franchise
  • True, but I feel this change may be a bit deeper. Blockchain served very little purpose, beyond its trust. With AI i am seeing proof of concept projects coming in for distilling client briefs, ideation of concepts and even release planning. Not replacing the people yet, but making processes faster. And that is just in my industry. Marketing and advertising.

  • Dungeons & Dragons tells illustrators to stop using AI to generate artwork for fantasy franchise
  • I work in an industry that will be heavily effected by AI over the next few years. My own opinion is that if you do not embrace and understand AI in your workflow, as a digital creative, you will be left behind. It is one thing to ban AI in your domain, like Hasbro has done, but a different matter where you are competing with other companies or creatives for the same business.

  • We Know “NoFap” Is Misleading Men About Masturbation. It Might Be More Dangerous Than That.
  • No point in attacking you for something that works for you. Neither of us learns anything under those conditions. Philosophies teaching abstinence in physical pleasures have been around forever. In my mental map of the world, the NoFap community falls under those.

It is something you believe helps you be the person you want to be, more power to you. I would only consider it harmful if it attempts to impose its ideas on people who don't agree. Or deliberately spreads misinformation internally that may be harmful to its adherents.

  • We Know “NoFap” Is Misleading Men About Masturbation. It Might Be More Dangerous Than That.
  • I think we can agree that your experience was valid and changed your life. The emphasis here is on your life for good reason. Porn and masturbation, like any other escape mechanism, is exactly that. I suspect something underlying as the cause for your need to escape that much. The nofap community there helped you reinforce that change. It does not make the community entirely wholesome.

What I wonder is if you would have had the same results with changes in your life without specifically focussing on porn and masturbation. I have observed this a few times in other areas, where changes to routine and outlook was the actual source of the improvement and not the thing the improvement was attributed to.

Just a thought. It is always good to try and understand yourself. It takes nothing away from your achievement in turning your life around.

  • NASA temporarily loses contact with V'ger
  • In this case I doubt it would be as simple as a mistake. That poor little spaceship is really old and baked by solar and cosmic radiation. There would just be no way to perfectly simulate the impact of your commands on the ground. Coupled with unstable power from a dying nuclear battery. I would not want to be the programmer responsible for that one. The fact that it works at all is amazing.

  • Google’s nightmare “Web Integrity API” wants a DRM gatekeeper for the web
  • AI will certainly be a challenge for web sites. I think we must accept that the end of the 2010s internet is upon us. Add supported web sites, that offer the user as the product, will start to slowly disappear. That is not really a bad thing though. The drawback for us users is that services will start to cost money.

I read a comment by Bill Gates recently where he suggested that most people will interact with AI through personal assistants. This actually feels like a good point from him. A PA that actually works will add a lot, to a lot of people. Which goes to your point about how normal users will stop interacting with the web though an unfiltered browser and start using AI to access the web. Companies who sell actual good and services online should be safe as their income is not dependant on advertising.

I suspect normal users will end up paying for the search engines used by the AI. On some form of tiered approach. Apart from a few oddball users, like us here in the fedverse who will find other ways to make things work.

Supporting Kbin from Patreon, Paypal issues

I have been trying to support our Kbin instance here on Patreon where I usually Paypal. I have other people I support though Patreon using Paypal, but paypal fails consistently for Kbin. Does anyone know of a reason why that would be?

    Thanks

universal IDs for threadiverse items (re kbin-core #635)
  • This would be very useful. I would argue for the universal link to go to the user's home instance, where the user should already be logged in and able to interact with the post. That is if the user has a default set. Otherwise the magazine's home instance makes sense for a unknown user.

It would be a core feature on activity pub itself though, with limited use on kbin.

  • When will a subscriptions list get added?
  • It is in the dev plan afaik. Until them have a look at /m/kbinstyles. It is a magazine for greasemonkey scripts that improve the user experience. On mobile, or I would post a direct link. I am using the subscriptions panel from there and it works okay. Of course as a temp fix until it is implemented in the main code base.

  • Many of Kbin terms dont make sense.. Why not replace them?
  • Magazine makes sense as a differentiation from lemmy's community. The concept is different so a different word is needed. Thread feels like a throwback to reddit, but it makes sense in the threadverse concept.

I agree on blog though. There post feels cumbersome. Badges could probably use a rewording, but tag makes more sense to me there as an accepted word.

  • Meta cancels Quest Pro, stops development of Quest Pro 2
  • Lol, but I get that. A proper affordable heads up display will add so much more value to my life. I ride motorcycles and that is where it can be really useful. A Kickstarter tried ot a while ago with a helmet, but that flopped badly. A pair of glasses that will fit in my helmet, beaming useful info to my eyeballs could be lifesaving.

I had a long rural night ride a while back and it was bloody tricky navigating with the mounted phone. Not out of choice, more of a needs must scenario. The Gaiman map app was very useful in indicating the road ahead, bit the split attention needed was insane.

    Another 90s geek chirping in.

  • Sci-fi you couldn’t get into?
  • The original Foundation is a product of its time. It is amazing when read in the context of the 1950s, but tricky today. Try Caves of Steel to further the I Robot read. Asimov built an entire future history spanning 10s of thousands of years.

  • Sci-fi you couldn’t get into?
  • Banks is my favourite sci fi author, but I to struggled with Consider Phlebas. Consider reading Player of Games. The culture books can be read as stand alone books without missing to much. I think Banks found his stride with Player of Games.

  • Affordable and excellent Kitchen knife: the Victorinox Fibrox
  • I have a set of 6 virtorinox steak knives from the 90s, that turned into general purpose kitchen knifes. They are now finally starting to become blunt. The black platic handles are smooth from use. 30 years on, ithink the time is approaching for them to be replaced. And that is only because I cannot sharpen the serated blades.

EDIT - Resolved Help Needed around understanding the Subscribed view: kbin.social/sub

Please help me understand how this view is intended to work. I have been seeing a lot of content on that view that I am not subscribed to. Today I deleted all of my subscriptions to try and see if the view will change and it does not. Am I missing something in how this is supposed to work, or is there a bug there at the moment?

In case it is missed in my comment below: Here is the solution:

Polymono, helped me find the issue on Codeberg where I logged it as a bug.

It seems that I inadvertently subscribed to https://kbin.social/d/kbin.social which is a meta group of the entire server. The problem is that you can only see that you are subscribed if you go there directly. It does not show in your subscription list.

Unsubscribing from there resolved my problem.

Thanks to Polymono for the help.

Question about the kbin subscribed view showing articles from non subscribed magazines

Hi I noticed this behaviour today on my kbin/sub view where posts started to appear from magazines I am not subscribed to. Is there a setting I am missing or is this a known issue?

Trimming Worlds for the 1.20 Migration - Shout-out to MCA Selector

I am in the process of preparing our server world for migration to 1.20 and thought I would share my experience with MCA Selector so far. A youtube video from Pixelriffs a few years ago pointed me in this direction.

Some things to note about MCA Selector U/I which confused me a bit when I first used the app.

    • Left Mouse button selects chunks
    • Middle button is used to grip and move the map
    • Right button deselects the chunk

I used a 1 minute rule to select chunks for deletion. This should avoid removing anything of importance to my players. Some smoothing must done manually with such a tight time rule.

Finally, Backup, Backup and Backup again. Just in case.
