Montenegro court acquits 13 in retrial over alleged election day plot

PODGORICA, July 12 (Reuters) - A Montenegro court acquitted 13 people including pro-Russian politicians and two Russian intelligence officers on Friday in a retrial over an alleged 2016 election day plot to topple the government and kill then-prime minister Milo Djukanovic. The defendants were initially convicted in 2019 and given long prison terms over the alleged plot against the pro-Western Djukanovic, who led the small Adriatic state almost continuously as premier or president for three decades until 2023. But the verdict was overturned on appeal in 2021 and a retrial was ordered.

China hits back at Nato over Russia accusations

China's foreign minister Wang Yi has hit back at Nato's "groundless accusations" that Beijing is helping Russia in its war on Ukraine.

He has also warned the Western alliance against stirring up confrontation.

Mr Wang's comments, made in a call with his Dutch counterpart, came hours after leaders of Nato member states gathered in Washington DC and issued a declaration that mentioned the war.

They accused China of being a "decisive enabler" of Russia through its "large-scale support for Russia's defence industrial base", in some of their harshest remarks yet about Beijing.

US clears way for Ukrainian military unit to use American weapons

WASHINGTON, June 11 (Reuters) - A U.S. review found no evidence of human rights violations by Ukraine's Azov Brigade, paving the way for it to use American training and weapons, the State Department said on Tuesday, citing Russian disinformation aimed at discrediting the unit. U.S. law bars foreign security forces from U.S. military assistance if they have committed gross violations of human rights, but a review of the National Guard of Ukraine's 12th Special Forces Azov Brigade cleared them for U.S. funds, the department said in a statement.

"After thorough review, Ukraineā€™s 12th Special Forces Azov Brigade passed Leahy vetting as carried out by the U.S. Department of State," the department wrote, referring to the Leahy Law. The move allows the Biden administration to reverse a decade-old ban on allowing the Ukrainian military unit to use U.S. weapons, according to The Washington Post, which first reported the decision.

Hamas had announced that it had accepted a cease-fire proposal from Qatar and Egypt, leaving many Gazans thinking that a truce was imminent. Their joy was short-lived; it soon became clear that Hamas was not talking about the same proposal endorsed days earlier by Israel, which said the two sides remained far apart.

South Africa asks World Court to order Israel's withdrawal from Rafah

AMSTERDAM, May 10 (Reuters) - South Africa has asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to order Israel to withdraw from Rafah as part of additional emergency measures over the war in Gaza, the U.N.'s top court said on Friday. In the ongoing case brought by South Africa, which accuses Israel of acts of genocide against Palestinians, the World Court in January ordered Israel to refrain from any acts that could fall under the Genocide Convention and to ensure its troops commit no genocidal acts against Palestinians.

[META] Looking for new mods that reside in APAC/AUS region
  • Hi there, we talked on discord but thought I'd make a comment here too.

Not from Asia/Aus region but due to my timezone and work I am available in the peak activity time for those regions.

I think that I would be a good fit for the team as I have had months of experience working with the c/world and c/politics team. I like to encourage discussion on these very important topics by following the community rules and acting on reports made by users promptly and with my own bias acknowledged. I choose not to comment much in the discussion as I feel that a moderators' presence should be seen through the discussion not heard in the discussion itself.

I don't think I would change anything as the community here is already fantastic and I just want to help out the existing team!

Thank you for your efforts to make lemmy.world the best

How cyberscams are drawing China into Myanmarā€™s civil war

Last fall, a coalition of rebel groups known as the Three Brotherhood Alliance launched a rapid-fire offensive across Myanmarā€™s northern Shan state, quickly overrunning more than 100 military outposts and seizing several key towns along the countryā€™s border with China.

This in itself was not unusual. Myanmarā€™s military government has faced insurgencies from ethnic and political militias for decades, and thereā€™s been a major uptick in rebel activity since the 2021 coup, which brought the countryā€™s current military junta to power, ending a short period of representative government. Over the past few months, the government has been rapidly losing ground to rebel forces in several regions of the country.

Houthi Retaliation Threats Echo After US Airstrikes in Yemen

All U.S. and British interests have become legitimate targets, the Houthi's Council declared.

A geopolitical storm is brewing in the Red Sea after U.S.-led strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen on Friday sparked a strong reaction from the Iran-backed militia, who immediately condemned the "brutal aggression" and vowed retaliation

The Houthi's Supreme Political Council declared that it would not allow the aggressors to escape punishment and "all U.S. and British interests have become legitimate targets."

Meanwhile, the internationally recognized government of Yemen issued a statement condemning recent military actions by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, blaming the Houthis for "dragging the country into a military confrontation arena for propaganda purposes."

The strikes mainly targeted weapons stores and drone assembly workshops to "intentionally avoid a direct impact on senior Houthi leaders," said Salah Bin Laghbar, an Anden-based political analyst.

World reacts to Taiwan election as China says reunification ā€˜inevitableā€™

China said ā€œreunificationā€ with Taiwan was still ā€œinevitableā€ after president-elect William Lai Ching-te won Saturdayā€™s pivotal election on the self-ruled island that Beijing claims as its own.

Lai, from the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), won despite warnings from China not to vote for him. He took 40.2 percent of votes cast, according to results from the Central Election Commission.

ā€œI want to thank the Taiwanese people for writing a new chapter in our democracy,ā€ Lai said in his victory speech. ā€œWe are telling the international community that between democracy and authoritarianism, we will stand on the side of democracy.ā€

In the run-up to the polls, China denounced Lai as a dangerous separatist, said he would be a threat to peace in the region if he won, and called the elections a choice between ā€œpeace and warā€.

I apologize if the process for appealing is unclear or if any of your posts or comments were removed in error.

Above all else I apologize if you were made to feel unwelcome here as it has been important for me the past 6 months moderating this community to try and develop a place for discussion from many sides on topics around the world.

Before the most recent additions to the mod team we had a practice of using a 1 day temp ban, 3 day temp ban, 7 day temp ban, and then permanent ban for many rule violations. (the exception being clearly racist trolling type of users) I think it would be good to return to a standardized structure as well as removing the MBFC requirements as the best way to fight misinformation is to prove its bias in comments rather than being the arbiters of good journalism.
