  • As others have said, the problem is when people refuse to acknowledge new information or admit imperfection.

You don't even need to fully admit fault in the moment. If someone provides some contradictory information, you can go "Oh, that's new to me. I'll have to read about it."

But the problem is people (all of us, to some extent) are emotionally invested in this. Admitting being wrong or imperfect feels like an attack on our security. You have to let that go. No one's going to hurt you if you admit you forgot the capital of NJ. You don't have to fight and try to change the argument to "well it should be Princeton" so you can avoid feeling wrong.

  • This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't happening while there's a climate crisis, housing crisis, and rise of fascism.

If tech bros want to set money on fire is isolation that's whatever. But burning all this money on crap when there are all these other problems that need money and attention? Unconscionable.

  • I was repeatedly disappointed by the class traitors I worked with. They were like "oh we have to work this weekend to get this feature out".

Do you? Do you really? Management set this deadline. They fucked up and now it's "behind schedule". And it's a website. It's not like there's a factory sitting idle until we're done, or a family without a home until the project is finished. The impact of "now you can view your project summary and team list side by side" is nil.

When I pushed back against this, my boss I was bringing down the team's morale. He said that it doesn't hurt me if they work longer. Bullshit. They're providing the same labor I am, but they're devaluing it. They're also setting a nasty precedent.

And you know what? Almost all of us got laid off anyway, including my boss.

This is also part of why the visa stuff is bullshit. Two of the guys were afraid to make any waves because if they lost their job, they might have to leave the country. Maybe they wouldn't be so traitorous if their personal security wasn't on the line.

Now the CEO is posting memes about how high unemployment is and captioning them "lol". He's a middle eastern man that loves Musk. If ICE takes him to a camp I'm going to feel a little bad because of basic humanity, but also laugh really hard at the leopards eating his face.

  • That's the one that conservatives thought the villain was the good guy, right? I'm not sure if that's a thing that really happened or just a satire of conservatives famously poor media literacy.

  • Code reviews are important. Unfortunately, no-test-text guy convinced his whole team that he was right, and I wasn't able to block it. I'd scheduled a meeting to try to get the wider org to adopt a more sensible standard, but then there was a mass layoff 🤷

The other guy with the bad messages is at a tiny startup where they've laid off almost everyone, and the other 2 guys don't want to make waves. The CEO is big on "just ship it" (and also "why are there bugs in production? this is unacceptable!!")

  • I worked at a place that prided itself on being "data driven". They put it on tshirts and made fun of startups they said were driven by emotions and gut feelings.

Someone brought up four day workweeks. They said every study they'd seen showed it was better for everyone involved.

The ceo, one of the big "data > feelings" guys, just laughed and said "we're not doing that.". Didn't look at any data or studies. Just shut it down.

So I'm glad there's another study about this, but I don't know how to get through to the thin skinned leaders.

  • I think a lot about something I read years ago. It said something like, "Some people love their country the way a child loves a parent. The parent is the smartest and the best and perfect. Some people love their country the way an adult loves a peer. They see the strengths, the potential, but also the weaknesses and problems that need to be addressed."

Conservatives are generally children. Driven largely by emotion with a very simple moral framework. Much like you will likely struggle to explain to a toddler that taking the other kid's toys, screaming constantly, and shitting in the sandbox won't make a lot of friends, explaining politics to a conservative is likely to be an ordeal. They don't care. They have feelings and that is their reality.

It's also kind of funny how conservatives are the ones who typically say "reality doesn't care about your feelings". Everything is projection.

  • I think the problem is they're wearing the mask when they're doing ICE stuff, not when they're coming in for dinner.

People who are doing ICE's evil work expect to go out for a nice dinner afterwards, when they're dressed like a typical suburbanite.

  • Could be. I'm not sure what games have defenders roll where a 10 is a questionable result. Such games exist.

But I think it's more likely the title was written by someone who's heard dnd terms and doesn't really play the game. It's got a "how do you do, fellow kids" feeling.
