A vital step forward for Parramatta as Sydney's second CBD.
  • @ajsadauskas @sydney glad the roxy got a shout out. Parramatta is still a bit under baked but it'll be interesting to see what it's like in 5 or so years.

  • So the RTA's own modelling showed the Rozelle Interchange would be a traffic disaster—but generating more toll road trips for Transurban was more important.
  • @ajsadauskas @fuck_cars absolutely cooked decision making. Sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one. Anyone with an even basic level of understanding of road geometry can (and did) spot the problem with these projects from a mile away. Sigh.

I sometimes wonder about an alternative timeline where the m4 east was built circa '04. That was the actual """missing link""".

When can we have our surface street space back for public/active transport and placemaking?

  • The saga of Waverley Park — Melbourne's car-dependent suburban AFL stadium with a planned seated capacity of over 150,000 (not a typo!)
  • @ajsadauskas @nictea @philip @fuck_cars has anyone ever said melbourne does planning well?! i reckon it's top contender for most thoughtless sprawl, and sydney and Brisbane put up a fight!

  • Sydney has opened up consultation on a strategy to reduce car traffic and make the city more walkable
  • @fullfathomfive @ajsadauskas @fuck_cars it's a strategy so naturally light on very specific detail, but this should help!

  • What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?
  • @ajsadauskas @fuck_cars this just shows that despite countless tv shows that attest otherwise, Americans have no appreciate for the humble neighbourhood bar.

  • Hold on a sec, weren't we all told that privatisation would lead to cheaper electricity prices?
  • @ajsadauskas @australianpolitics yeah if you can't feasible set up a competitor it fails the 'should be privatised' test. Ofc there's caveats on having a private operator running specific functions but selling infrastructure that is 'one of a kind' and very necessary into private hands is insane. Dams, rail roads, highways, transmission infrastructure all fall in this category.

  • There's a new RMTransit (@RM_Transit) video up about high-speed rail from Melbourne to Sydney.
  • @paulwallbank @RM_Transit @ajsadauskas @fuck_cars they're much better in the sense that they've making sustained progress on both of those goals.

  • There's a new RMTransit (@RM_Transit) video up about high-speed rail from Melbourne to Sydney.
  • @paulwallbank @RM_Transit @ajsadauskas @fuck_cars yeah in terms of dealing with the actual grinding reality the best shot is improving run times and upping trainlink frequencies. vline style. focus on building patronage on the north coast and Canberra runs in particular, city to city traffic will come after.

  • There's a new RMTransit (@RM_Transit) video up about high-speed rail from Melbourne to Sydney.
  • @RM_Transit @ajsadauskas @fuck_cars meh sadly not so crazy. just business as usual for an agency that is focused on reducing costs rather than improving service/increasing revenue.

I've been on that many sold out trains this summer and yet the new order is just replacing rolling stock at roughly the same quantities.

  • @ajsadauskas @fuck_cars

Hey @RM_Transit not sure if you're aware but nsw trainlink who run the syd-Melb xpt have placed an order to replace the xpts and it doesn't include sleeper carriages. I think that would've been worth including in your vid because it really kicks the can on expanding sleeper service another 30 years down the road. It's not insurmountable, but it's difficult to see expanding sleeper service as a viable way fwd when we have brand new carriages that don't have that function.

I think a bit of advocacy and awareness around that issue would be helpful!

  • @ajsadauskas @RM_Transit @fuck_cars yeah there is no doubt about that. Gladys came so close to getting it...

  • Whoopsie! Sydney's road planners just discovered induced demand is a thing, after opening a new motorway.
  • @ajsadauskas @fuck_cars @sydneytrains @urbanism

I think it's more a case of this whole interchange has been built for western harbour tunnel. ie the more lanes are coming...in 5 years.

  • ‘Knee-jerk reaction’: Sydney cycle path to be ripped up months after opening
  • @ukuku @ajsadauskas @ajsadauskas@lemmy.ml It's terrible and disappointing. But not without precedent! See: College Street. Interestingly in that case the council was the proponent of the bike lane and the State took it out.

  • The problems with Amtrak: Travelling the US Midwest shouldn't be this complicated
  • @ajsadauskas @ajsadauskas@lemmy.ml @heartlandurbanist @video yeah its a joke. The only connection heading east out of Detroit is a thruway bus to Toledo that leaves at 10pm and schedules a 3 hour wait (assuming the lakeshore is on time...which, is basically a coin toss) for the lakeshore at 3am. This, from a metro area of millions, heading to anywhere in new england/north-east. It's wild.

Re: Ohio, 3-Cs is basically number one on amtrak Joe's list so stayed tuned! Maybe in 2040...

Enthusiastic geographer. I blog about buses, podcast about Sydney's history and documentarised the Macquarie River.

Good takes are my own. Bad takes must be someone else's.
