Wrapping up COSMIC’s main features before the first beta release.

macOS and iOS profiles to configure our DNS over TLS and DNS over HTTPS service. Can be applied with human interaction, or via MDM. - mullvad/encrypted-dns-profiles

1: how many of you have used it before and do you like it over (non-foss) NextDNS?
2: Which one should I use if I want to block ads on all apps (iOS), DoT or DoH?
thank you, that's alright if it is on the issue board. I was wondering if the Cosmic Team was aware of it and planning to add it in the future.. Look like it is in good hands
I understand cosmic-comp is unique. My question is: on current pop os, I don't need to enable 3d acceleration, so in the upcoming pop os (with cosmic-comp), will it work the same way..?
I want to avoid using 3d acceleration, because whenever I enable it, my system will get hot and fan will spin regardless of workload
@savvynik are you running it on actual hardware or virtual machine?
but I don't have to do that for current Pop release... (22.04)

why is it pinging the github server every minute??

yes, but is there a way I can use it on vm wihtout gpu acceleration, basically only virtio on qemu
The last update was in 2020. Electron version is 8.0.
I have been using it since then on linux.. however, I am not too sure if I should keep using it?
If I am moving to another app, I am thinking of rednotebook, unless there is something better.
I run it as live usb, looking good. ANy plan to allow us to run on vm? I don't have a spare laptop I can use for testing..thank you
that is a good point... I obviously missed that. my generally would only use flatpak from the same developer of the app, or I will just use the deb packaged by my distro.
actually there is difference in version between the two. deb by my distro is in 4.0.0 (mar, 2022) while flatpak is 5.0.0 (nov, 2024)
i am not sure which one is the native version... you mean the version packaged by the distro (deb) or the developer (flatpak)?
for the media player, quoted from mmstick (phoronix.com)
A video player is probably the easiest app to implement because it's based on the iced video player widget. It's just a matter of porting it to COSMIC. And there's no reason not to add a video player to the core lineup if it can be done. Every OS has a default system video player.
Can we have virtio support please?
I found these instructions but I wasn't sure if they would mess with the default setup. I'm running pop 22.04. Thanks in advance.
thanks, T increases the timeout and Shift+T to decrease.. solved
before the encryption password input, there is a splash screen.
``` pop!_OS
Pop!_OS recovery
Reboot Into Firmware Interface ```
how can I disable it?
i can sudo apt install gnote
however, i cannot find it in the cosmic store, or the pop shop..
yes theres a flatpak, but i am interested in the deb
agree, QXL is slower as compared to virtio in my testings
This rebases directly on the upstream Linux 6.9.8 release with Ubuntu's 6.9.4 mainline-crack packaging applied.
Long story short, it is pretty solid as an alpha release! I would have installed it on bare metal, if I have another computer.
If you are installing on 22.04, this post still valid, https://lemm.ee/post/25474700
if you are installing the official 24.04 Alpha iso, simply select to use QXL graphic on vm setup. no other changes needed in the OS level.
@mmstick, any plan to support virtio graphic?
are you guys skipping 6.8.2 due to the regression?
please don't skip the nice 6.9 kernel though
there was no updates in last week. I'm sure the team is working hard on the cosmic de and other refinements.
are these official apps?
Pop!_OS fork of https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux - Linux 6.8.0 jammy by mmstick · Pull Request #301 · pop-os/linux
apps available to try with this method are:
cosmic-edit
cosmic-files
cosmic-term
-
install virt-manager
-
create a vm pop-os
-
start the vm
-
sudo apt install cosmic-session
-
sudo nano /etc/gdm3/custom.conf
-
... set ..
WaylandEnable=true
-
reboot
-
at the log in screen, there is a small gear wheel on the bottom right side, choose “Pop on Wayland" (edit: if you want COSMIC DE to work too, see update below) (edit2: if you can't see the gear wheel, see update2 below)
.
update:
there are some settings on the virt-manager to make COSMIC DE works.
if you don't need to run COSMIC DE, can ignore the following
- Display Spice : Type = Spice server, Listen type = none, uncheck password / opengl
- Video : use QXL (instead of default Virtio)
new step 8. at the log in screen, there is a small gear wheel on the bottom right side, choose “COSMIC"
.
update2:
-
sudo nano /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules
-
Goto the line that reads
LABEL="gdm_prefer_xorg"
-
.. commend out the next line ..
#RUN+="/usr/libexec/gdm-runtime-config set daemon PreferredDisplayServer xorg"
-
Goto the the line that reads
LABEL="gdm_disable_wayland"
-
.. commend out the next line ..
#RUN+="/usr/libexec/gdm-runtime-config set daemon WaylandEnable false"
-
sudo systemctl restart gdm.service
The base Ubuntu 24.04 LTS shipping with Linux kernel 6.8 is anticipated for release on April 25th, 2024.
Sometimes when resuming from sleep, or when playing a fullscreen video, my screen will fill with white video blocks.
rebooting will fix the problem (until it appears again).
One solution is to add amdgpu.sg_display=0
sudo kernelstub -a "amdgpu.sg_display=0"
