  • Everything you just said about me was quoted completely out of context, but of course it would be. At least this time you can't go and remove my comments when I explain my position.

Context One of our users had been reported by a hexbear user for "homophobia" for what seemed to me at the time, a pretty innocuous statement. Here's what OP had written:

I mean, not to directly play devil's advocate but I heard plenty of the 'that's so gay' stuff in high school and even then it was commonly understood to mean silly and stupid (ethics of this not discussed here). If you were actually gay no one gave a shit. Are you 100% sure it's your sexuality they were talking about? Or is that something you assumed because you were self-conscious of it? I am not advocating for either way or saying it wasn't done in hate, I just want to make sure you're not putting yourself through undue hardship. [OG post by a dbzer0 user that was reported for homophobia]

Having reviewed the comment thread after a report of homophobia, my stated position was as follows:

It seems to be, as a gay person myself, that this is a perfectly reasonable take and not homophobic at all. He points out the common use of the word 'gay' in a common usage in high school. He doesn't try to justify it ethically, just observes that it occurs, and asks if perhaps the common use of 'gay' as a general pejorative may have been the case here, instead of a direct comment on a person's sexual orientation. So, it seems to me that the one example you provided is by no means a clear example of anything, except perhaps of hexbear users immediately making bad faith assumptions about users not from their instance. […]

I’ll point out here that I at no point argued that it was ok to use the term “gay” as a pejorative, and neither did the user who was reported as being homophobic. It seemed to me the user was simply pointing out that the term is unfortunately in common use as a pejorative, especially in a high school situation, and is often applied to people anyone and everyone, regardless of whether they are gay or not. And looking at their post history, there was absolutely no indication they were homophobic in previous comments, and in fact it indicated the complete opposite. Where the evidence points to a bad-faith interpretation of a user’s comments (as in this example) then we will generally give the user the benefit of the doubt. Again, I don’t apologize for that approach. Serious accusations require substantive evidence, and I found no substance to this report.

In this particular example, the hexbear user chose to “disengage” from the conversation (a classic hit and run job), and so my comment was removed by a hexbear mod, removing any context from the discussion. So, I’m now apparently considered by some hexbear users to be “a homophic mod, hiding behind being gay”, in large part because any contextual information was immediately removed, and I was almost immediately perma-banned (subsequently changed to a temp-ban).

And ever since, I'm branded as homophobic gay man by hexbear trolls everywhere, because haters gotta hate I guess?

Edit: had extended quotes too far

  • I'm not suggesting study bias, but I am suggesting that Chinese citizens' social media and internet use is now so closely monitored by the CPP that it has a chilling effect on free speech, and this may have influenced the results even if they were told the study was anonymous.

Secondly, since Xi took power, according to that same report, he has "effectively sidelined functional and professional institutions of party and state", in addition to removing term limits. These are all classic authoritarian strongman moves. The study goes on to point out that having an effective authoritarian as leader - one who has helped improve the lives of many Chinese citizens - is of course going to be popular. The old saying goes that a benevolent dictatorship is the best form of government, and that may be true in some regards, right up until the point it isn't benevolent anymore. Which is more or less inevitable imo.

  • Reminds me of the "Physician, heal thyself" quote, except "Website, police thyself" with the added bonus that a bunch of pro-copyright lobbyists wrote all the anti-piracy laws that you are now obliged to enforce on their behalf.

  • I guess they are targeting the uptight religious fundamentalist demographic. I think for most Democrats, it wouldn't be a problem, even if it was true.

  • It couldn't possibly be that people are too scared to criticize the CCP, right? ... right?

  • I think the reason people don't post much about how to host pirated media and distribute to a wide audience is because in reality it's not so easy to do this. This community mainly exists to help people learn the basic of piracy: e.g., how to torrent safely, how to setup a jellyfin server, which websites are good for obtaining certain types of media, help with troubleshooting etc.

Let's take torrenting as an illustrative example. It's simple to learn how to download a torrent, and even simpler to seed it (though you might not think so given the actual number of damn seeders lol). But if you want to become a torrent uploader of your own pirated content there are many barriers to entry:

    • If anyone could upload torrents to [insert your favorite public torrent tracker site here] then it would quickly become swamped by malicious uploads that contain malware. That's why it's hard to find any public trackers that allow torrent uploads. You may have better luck on a private tracker, but then you will have to jump through hoops to get an invite, and then prove yourself over a period of time.
    • It takes time to establish a reputation as a trusted uploader, and even one (accidental or otherwise) slipup and you have destroyed your reputation. That's why pirates love uploaders like fitgirl (for example), who has created clean and trusted repacks for many years.

Hosting is problematic because it's a constant cat-and-mouse game with domains being seized frequently and DMCA notices being sent to the hosting provider who will often happily delete your account and give your info to the po po. You've also got to consider bandwidth and infrastructure costs.

Apps like Jellyfin are great for personal use (a few friends and family) but usually can't cope with a large number of simultaneous users. Online streaming piracy is very user friendly, but extremely expensive and technical to setup at scale.

You can upload to Usenet but you have to be very careful to hide your tracks since your IP address could be logged when uploading. And Usenet is often pretty hopeless for older stuff because uploaded content often gets copyright claimed quite quickly, and content is only retained for so long.

Maybe I2p is part of the answer? It has some enthusiastic advocates, but I haven't really engaged with it much so far.

  • You mean this one, that I removed as "Tankie adjacent post, masquerading as piracy related"? You could argue (and they did) that it's just a (shitty) anti corporate post. But I saw it as yet another troll on the West from the hexbear/.ml contingent. Ordinarily I would have given the poster the benefit of the doubt, and a more generous interpretation, but seeing it came from .ml amid a flurry of other trolling activity on our instance at the time from those two instances (mainly hexbear to be fair to .ml), I assumed it was posted in bad faith to characterize Westerners as privileged pro-corporate stooges. So, propaganda, basically. Of course, opinions will vary, but that was my take at the time.

And to add further context, I never banned the user who posted it. All I did was remove the post. It should have been no big deal. It was only a big deal because they decided to dogpile me like the scummy trolls they are. It seems to me that Hexbear seems to blow something massively out of proportion and call for admins to be banned at least once a week. It's become their MO really, and while it's sometimes entertaining to watch from the sidelines, let's call it what it is - bullying and harassment.

  • The Myth That Protein Reduces Bone Health

Despite all the calcium that dairy contains, some believe that its high protein content can cause osteoporosis.

The reason is that when protein is digested, it increases the acidity of the blood. The body then pulls calcium from the blood to neutralize the acid.

This is the theoretical basis for the acid-alkaline diet, which is based on choosing foods that have a net alkaline effect and avoiding foods that are “acid forming.”

However, there really isn’t much scientific support for this theory.

If anything, the high protein content of dairy is a good thing. Studies consistently show that eating more protein leads to improved bone health (4, 5, 6, 7).

Not only is dairy rich in protein and calcium, it’s also loaded with phosphorus. Full-fat dairy from grass-fed cows also contains some vitamin K2.

Protein, phosphorus and vitamin K2 are all very important for bone health (8, 9).

    Summary

Not only is dairy rich in calcium, it also contains large amounts of protein and phosphorus, all of which are important for optimal bone health.

Kamala Harris Is Eligible to Run for US President, Despite Parents Being Foreign-Born

  • Thanks very much, it looks like a useful tool.

  • Yes, for me that's a good thing too. Hopefully some of it rubbed off on her.

  • The only helpful comment, thank you!

Fact is, it can be hard for new pirates to distinguish between a real virus and a false positive. For your future reference, OP, https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/upload is a good place to upload any files you want to check out properly. If 90% come up as "clean" and the rest say stuff like "crack" or "pup (potentially unwanted software)" then you're likely good to go.

Fitgirl is a trusted uploader and you seem to be using the official site, so I would assume it's totally fine. Make sure you read the instructions in the readme when you download games, because they will often advise to set an exception for certain files in your antivirus to ensure they aren't detected as false positives.
