Election recap
  • any other year id agree re nats on ballarat. incumbent in bendigo i thought was popular, who had an. 11.5% lead from last election. nats didnt run in bendigo in 22, and they expanded boundaries this year so there must have been enough for them to think they had a chance.

not wrong tho re skews right

  • Election recap
  • The nats hang on in their rural areas with their rusted on voters. I’d be surprised if their brand of party were able to translate that into any city seats.

They really throuhg everything and the kitchen sink at bendigo. The twin sister in my mind has always been Ballarat. they had no issues retaining labor, and i suspect without the incredible effort dumped on bendigo the nats candidate would have struggled to get ahead.

  • you could use it as motivation. i got a similar 10k pb not long after i brgan running by pausing, resting and running again. realised a few years later it was probably not the most accurate and went out and smashed it.

  • What am I missing without expensive running shorts?
  • You’re not missing much. You can get much, much cheaper versions of 2xu and the like from stores that perform as good or better than 2xu. They last about the same.

Also you can get execllent imitations of most big brands from ali for a fraction of the price (injinji being an example).

  • Go see a good podiatrist if you can. They should be able to diagnose root causes of the pain.

for me, i found i was collapsing my arch as i ran. i ended up with inserts but also need to use lace locks, as they will give my foot more support and reduce how much the arch collapses.

also, if its been a while, check if you need new shoes.

  • So Happy With My 8K Time!
  • One of the surprising things about running is how often it surfaces weird issues for me to solve. I’ve learned so much about my body and its baseline performance over the last couple years.

  • Garmin daily suggested workouts: how do you manage your heart rate based workout?
  • Wrist-based HR is at best “average” so take it with a grain of salt. It can sometimes take up to 30 seconds for a drastic change in HR to display on your watch.

On mine, I’ve seen it glitch out a lot at the start of runs where it shows my HR going through the roof (when I’m really barely in z2)

If you’re running to zones, I look at it as % time spent in zone. I’m not great at staying in zone, and you can’t help but work harder going up a hill. So I target 80% in z2 for example. If I find I’m working too hard (and straying too long into a higher zone), I stop and walk to bring it down then go slower.

Note that outside temperature does play a part. A hot / humid day will bring your HR up a few points.

For more accuracy, a HR strap is better.

  • Yeah post pic is so inaccurate its not funny. Needs to be 100% drenched in sweat like they just took a sweat shower and splashed some extra sweat on for effect.

It rained during parkrun and somehow it got even hotter.

  • Running General Chat - Weekly Thread Sat 30 November 2024
  • Still got a few out to the local parkrun. It got heavier as the run went on, it was actually quite refreshing by the end.

I’m really struggling with motivation as we get closer to Christmas. Will probably bump my weekly mileage down about 10km coming into the ny.

  • Cold weather gear recommendations
  • Being male I have no hips and so tights just wriggle their way down my waist as I run. I feel like a penguin after a short while and spend a bunch time trying to pull them back up as I’m running.

The result is awful chafing between the legs.

If I’m wearing tights I usually spread the body glide pretty heavily between my legs, which helps a little.

  • Cold weather gear recommendations
  • under 10c or feels like, thin gloves and short sleeved shirt with singlet underneath.

5c and below, long sleeved shirt and tights, and warm hat.

closer to 0c may wear an extra shirt over top of long sleeves.

edit: material is whatever quick dry sports material is available. ive not seen a significant difference in performance between top end (2xu, under armor) and no name dept store / ali amazon / temu brands

  • I’m not a morning runner by any stretch but I’ve always made time for Parkrun. Sometimes its sociable but often times its just me and a bunch of strangers going for a run.

Sometimes you just want to be around people but not have to interact.

  • Running General Chat - Weekly Thread Mon 30 September 2024
  • I realised that recent issues I was having with legs and feet appear to have been caused exclusively by old shoes. I’m not sure how ppl get more than 800km out of a pair of shoes. Mine will barely last 500km.

Anyway, reminder to track shoe mileage and toss them when they get old. If you search it up you can find info on how to spot shoes that are no longer performing.

  • I think if your body is not used to getting up at 5:30am and eating, its gonna feel weird. My only morning run is usually a parkrun, and I don’t eat before that. My other runs (12 - 16 km) I usually wait until I’ve had a large meal + 90 minutes then go.

I usually run in the evenings, I struggle with events because they usually are run early in the morning (so I have the same issue, having to get up early just to eat).

For getting past 10km, just make sure you are putting a long run into your weekly runs, and keep increasing your total mileage week on week. Yeah, it will be a struggle until your body can catch up to it.

  • Thats a really good time for a first HM. I was previously not doing anything when running re listening to something but I’ve recently been trying to listen to podcasts that I dont have to pay too much attention to. It would be good to have someone to talk shit with as well, just to take your mind off it.

As arranged, we met up with Russ Jeffreys at Higginson parkrun, in Marlow, and after the event, sat down together in a quiet local pub. Russ arrived with Paul Sinton-Hewitt, the parkrun founder. From our side, we had Will Hartley, Mary Taylor and Alexander Smotrov, another signer of our open letters...
