Kanye West was denied entry to Australia after releasing antisemitic song
  • Hey OP, I noticed at the bottom of the article it credits that it's a republishing of the original article by ABC. Always good to link upstream if you notice that happening, for example the upstream article might notice a mistake and correct it.

  • Kanye West was denied entry to Australia after releasing antisemitic song
  • On the other hand, I enjoy finally seeing a correct use of the word "antisemitic" by ABC News.

  • Kanye West barred from entering Australia over Hitler song, Tony Burke says
  • pls check the comm before reposting the same news story that's already been here for hours.

  • Former Greens candidate may lose sight after being arrested in Sydney protest
  • I hope they heal up alright and keep their sight. A friend who was arrested by NSW Police at Port Botany for similar protests said they saw headshot photos in the police station of people the police were aiming to arrest (union and organisation leaders) so I don't think it's an "unfortunate coincidence" they brutalised someone so famous. [edit: scare quotes, not quoting anyone]

  • Tax data round up: ATO tells you what suburbs to hit up with bolt cutters and a van.
  • Yeah let's have a look into those tax-deductible charities they're dumping tens of millions into. I've seen this abused overseas so I won't blindly trust them over here.

  • Trial finds age assurance can be done, as social media ban deadline looms
  • New checkbox on the sign-up form. Works every time.

  • 'Sovereign citizens' sentenced to prison term in Western Australia for defiance of court order
  • Yeah part 2 is about a different subsection specific to niche indigenous groups trying to play the same kind of "well technically" game with fake laws instead of actual effective resistance strategies, so while I think it's interesting too, it's less relevant to these news stories we see so it's alright to hold off on.

    Which brings us full-circle

Yeah, interesting to see that the legal system (at least that judge) has finally stopped with the initial toleration of these SovCit-style claims. When the system ignores or shows the restraint to tolerate this flavour of SovCit pseudolaw, it can validate them and (as you pointed out) some have lost homes or ended up in prison over their idiot ideas. That really puts context into the judge's quote below; it's not just the harassment or gun-holding compounds to worry about, but the danger this delusional arrogance can do to themselves.

Mr and Ms Martin have told me more than once they are not dangerous people," he wrote. "The ideas they express, however, can be extremely dangerous"

  • I'll get a bag of those carrots that they reckon are misshaped. WCGW.
  • If this question was sincere surprise, there was an Australia documentary episode two years back ("War on Waste") with a section about "up to a third of" carrots being dismissed by the dominant supermarkets because they were "misshapen", sometimes really petty stuff, not even bruises or discolouration or anything that a picky person might question but being too long or short, skinny, not straight enough.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNNEW8ydOm4 (clip from the docco)

In reaction (or by recommendation), some supermarkets have added small sections marketing various fruit/veg as 'odd' funny-looking ones at discount prices. An improvement, but a long way to go.

  • It's good to be hesitant about -isms and racism doesn't explain the whole story (imperialism has economic and therefore political implications, the Zionist Regime has played an important imperial role for the US and its allies in the region) but it's absolutely an aspect at play.

Growing up, I only really remember SBS talking about the Middle East bombings most years unless something truly exceptional happened. Not to trivialise it in any way, but when the Ukraine invasion happened, the reactions of a lot of Australians around me really showed that wars are far more important when White peoples are involved, despite being on the other side of the world, further away. Barely a peep about New Caledonia or West Papua. And to be fair, when I say "racism" I'm also talking about a casual environment of it, not any conscious discrimination. Most of Colonial Australia has a real and significant social link to Europe and the US, we see it as more relevant to our own situation than South East Asian countries, for example.

But, as you mentioned, there's also the Islamophobia and overt racism. There's absolutely an assumption or framing that this is a religious conflict and the evil Muslims want to kill those in the Zionist Regime simply because of "uncivilized" religious differences.

  • Beans and rice - how would you spice it up?
  • Taco seasoning is my intuition (has cumin, paprika, chilli powder, onion powder, etc.) and/or salsas, if you have the money for it you can make that into burritos and other dishes with lettuce, tomato, sour cream/yogurt, etc..

  • Sorry for late reply:

They can’t form a political party. Right?

All I really know is it's their stated aim.

Plenty of their spokespeople are capable of being careful with their words, and they have lots of experience with woof-whistling. So it might not be nazi in name, just platforming the same policies. But, on the other hand, we have had Nazi electoral parties before: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Socialist_Party_of_Australia , and we have white nationalist parties still existing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_First_Party

It's legal to be a complete piece of shit if you're calm and smart with your words. Hate speech laws can only do so much.

  • *Wiitching Hour at Northland* - an important video about how Aussies can prevent Nazis promoting themselves and gaining power

    This video covers:

    • Why the NSN nazi org typically resort to cowardly flash-mobbing at 3:30am when no-one is around
    • What they aim to achieve through flash mobs, and in their own words, the effect they want to have in media
    • How the way we share news of these events can promote their group (increasing its funding and its ability to form a legal political party)
    • Exclusive footage of those nazis getting beaten up

Since this is an important topic, especially for social media users, please share this video to other communities!

(I was late to watch and share so that Anti-Racism Action event mentioned at the very end has already happened.)

Hundreds of students join Sydney Uni SGM to reject antisemitism smears against Palestine protests – Solidarity Online

    OP article: 17 May 2025

Alternate article- Student general meeting demands USyd drop specious definition of antisemitism, cut ties with Israel - 18 May 2025

USyd response statement - University of Sydney does not condone student resolution: statement: 21 May 2025

    ___

    Selected paragraphs:

    > Over 200 students packed a Student General Meeting at the University of Sydney this week, overwhelmingly rejecting the university’s new definition of antisemitism, designed to smear supporters of Palestine, and standing up to a crackdown on the right to protest.

    > The new Universities Australia definition of antisemitism, adopted by nearly all Australian universities, states that criticism of Israel can be antisemitic “when it calls for the elimination of the State of Israel”. It draws heavily on the widely-condemned International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition which has been opposed by organisations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

    > In the end, only two students voted against any of the motions. It was an incredibly important moment for the movement on campus in a context where the right to support Palestine is under serious attack.

    > When two Zionist students spoke against the motions, calling pro-Palestine protesters antisemitic and condemning Hamas, the entire auditorium turned their backs on them. In response to their claims, an anti-Zionist student from a Jewish family spoke in support of the motion to support the one-state solution, telling the crowd: “I’m tired of being represented by Jewish people that think defending the state of Israel is valid, so I decided to come and speak for myself.”

    > In the lead-up to the meeting, the University had also threatened to cancel the room booking for the SGM unless the meeting was recorded and every student who wanted to attend presented their identification to security. These demands were dropped after opposition from the SRC.

Anyone got some "tasting australian foods" videos they like?

A low-hanging fruit on YouTube/etc. is "[Nationality] TRIES [nationality] FOOD FOR THE FIRST TIME!!", you know the type, but a few of them are actually entertaining or have novel commentary and not just vapid "i lieked this/i didnt like vegemite" reaction filler.

Bonus points for any that involve actual recipes (e.g. a pavlova) instead of just packaged lollies, biscuits and spreads.

News and Politics in /c/australia: "She'll be right", or "not on, mate"?

I love putting things in boxes, it's my hobby you see, so I'd like to hear other people's thoughts and perspectives on this.

But my point is pretty straightforward: there is an overarching aussie.zone community, and as long as the sidebars are well-connected to aid discovery (and they're already pretty good), there's no point in having news and politics spread across three different communities, and we just end up with redundant crossposting creating parallel conversations.

It would be great to clarify the relationship between /c/australia, /c/news and /c/australianpolitics.

Behind Trump’s spiralling tariff war: An interview with Marxist economist Michael Roberts

This interview is notable for asking some questions from a different perspective to most opinions I've seen. The questions include: (paraphrased)

    • What are the aims of the tarrifs, and will they achieve it? (spoiler: lol no)
    • Do the US mega-rich support Trump’s tariffs?
    • How do they fit into Trump's broader foreign policy?
    • Do these tarrifs spell the end of globalisation?
    • Will these lead to further decoupling from the Global South, allowing them to pursue more autonomous development strategies?
    • What position should working-class forces take towards these tariffs and talk of retaliatory tariffs from other countries, whether in the Global North or South?

Aussie Lemmyvision 2 Nomination Voting (closes 31 March)

This post is for voting on /c/rage's Lemmyvision 2 song nomination.

Over the past few weeks, our community has submitted nominations, and we have until April 1 to pick a winner. Our Lemmyvision representative, @Gorgritch_umie_killa, has delegated our election to an independent agency, the Aussie.zone Eureka Commission (AEC).

Anyone who has recently commented a few times on aussie.zone before today is allowed to vote. (This includes, for example, some quokk.au users and various Australian Lemmy users on other instances)

This election uses preferential Instant-Runoff Voting[wiki] just like our federal elections. Put simply, this means that if your [1] choice has no chance of election, your vote then runs over to your [2] choice, and so on, so there's no disadvantage in picking an unpopular song you love for your first votes, your vote is not 'wasted' at all. Vote sincerely.

A couple of the nominations weren't released during 2024, we've received confirmation from the organiser that they're allowed!

Here are the entries. Please listen to them all before voting:

Here is the ballot template for you to fill in. Copy and paste it as a new reply to this post, and number ALL boxes from 1 to 10 in order of your choice. [1] is your first preference, [10] is your last preference. ````text ___ LemmyVision 2 /c/rage Nomination Ballot

Do admin tools allow blocking posts/direct-messages based on text?

The "Nicole" spammer is annoying, but it's a great test of our anti-spam capabilities.

Spam is a real threat. efore this instance was made, there was a right-wing troll using open-registration instances to spam shock porn on every post they could until they were banned, then come back the next day. And with the increased popularity of Lemmy, commercial spam is more and more likely to begin.

If you have the capability to block text, could you try to block the Nicole spam messages?

[satire] How to fix traffic congestion

This is the B-plot of Utopia (2014) Season 4 Episode 8.

    1

    Summary:

    >Today, Australia’s 39 universities endorsed a dangerous and politicised definition of antisemitism which threatens academic freedom, will have a chilling effect on legitimate criticism of Israel, and risks institutionalising anti-Palestinian racism. They did so without meaningful consultation with Palestinian groups or diverse Jewish groups who are critical of Israel. > >The Jewish Council of Australia strongly opposes the antisemitism definition developed by the Group of Eight (Go8) universities and adopted by Universities Australia. By categorising Palestinian political expression as inherently antisemitic, it will be unworkable and unenforceable, and stifle critical political debate, which is at the heart of any democratic society. > >The definition dangerously conflates Jewish identities with support for the state of Israel and the political ideology of Zionism.

I was going to include some key dot points, but this statement is succinct enough that you should just read it, or at least skim it.

[2024-12-24] After hosting a (failed) neo-Nazi recruitment event, fascist HQ gets their door bashed in by Santa and office sprayed with liquid

Footage in link, description copied here:

    >Anonymous Submission 🎄 24.12.24 > >Christmas came early when, this week, the NWA's door was shattered, and the inside of their office ruined with a mystery liquid. > >Overnight, the head office of the fascist group National Workers Alliance (NWA) was attacked by anti-fascists. The NWA has been acting as a bridge for uniting the far right under the guise of "working class organizing". > >NWA has hosted three fascist events this year, with members of neo-nazi groups such as NSN attending each one, along with other far right figures. They also march most Saturdays through so-called melbourne CBD. > >This office was the location of the most recent (failed) recruitment event for NWA. > >Solidarity with all anti-fascist action taken in this colony. We must continue to shut down fascism everywhere, in the streets, in the workplace and in the community. > >No mercy for fascists.

I suppose the Polish Club are glad they didn't host this time. More context.

[META] New moderator, and changes to the comm

gday everyone. In response to the recent meta discussion, I've volunteered as a moderator for /c/worldnews.

The main reasons I volunteered is to make this comm less generic and more suited to aussie.zone, as well as reducing the stream of drive-by spam posts.

There are a few ways I aim to achieve this:

    • We'll change the community title. I've already picked an example title, Overseas News, although this is temporary for now so critique and suggestions are welcome! I picked this name to keep the basic idea of this comm clear while distinguishing us from generic "World News" clones, and so even a federated Lemmy user searching for world news comms to post to will have a fair chance to see we aren't just an extra opportunity for attention. (I understand it might be confusing that this is still https://aussie.zone/c/worldnews, but changing the comm's id is much harder and needs a serious discussion first)
    • We'll create basic rules to codify our expectations. I've added some already, and again, feedback is wanted. I've tried to keep them direct and lenient, based on the previous meta discussion and prior deletions from the modlog. Once we reach a general consensus, I will apply them to posts from the past few months, to set the stage. [edit: this is now in motion]

Let me know if you have other ideas. I'll be pretty hands-off beyond removing blatant agenda spamming from outsiders and global rule violations, since this is a casual and open community and I have a job and hobbies ;)
