  • I would argue that this is not really true under capitalism. The logic of capitalism is one of capital accumulation, which requires growth. Under other systems you still have markets and money and profits but there are other goals than the accumulation of capital and therefore achieving “homeostasis” is a successful strategy-a business run with consistent inputs and outputs which includes a sustainable profit.

  • In his book Drug Cartels Do Not Exist, Oswaldo Zavala argues that it’s not the state monopoly on violence that is the issue, but the state monopoly on exception. The cop who decides that this teenager he caught with a joint, or speeding, or fighting someone else, shouldn’t be arrested, but that teenager doing the same things should be arrested, is an example of the monopoly on exception.

  • Impossible to tell. Your brain is how it is, rather than worry about what you cannot change, think about what you want to do and how to do it. If you are experiencing cognitive issues or emotional distress that you think might be a long term effect of your young drinking, talk to a therapist or your doctor about how to address those issues now.

  • “Dick” is archaic American slang for “the truth.” Although as another commenter said, there is an element of “they knew” here, because “dick” meant “penis” before the more innocuous usage came around.

  • In The Prehistory of the Far Side, Gary Larson talks about how some people thought this cartoon was insulting to Dr Goodall. When he actually heard from her, she told him she thought it was really funny. In fact, she licensed the cartoon to put it on t-shirts for the Jane Goodall Institute.

  • Bill Clinton tried triangulation (read: being more right wing) and the republicans tried to impeach him. Obama was right of Reagan and the republicans…tried to impeach him. If the GOP is going to fuck with democrats no matter what, let’s just elect some truly revolutionary people. I mean people who make Bernie Sanders look like Mitt Romney. People who make Cornel West look like Paul Ryan. We should be running people who start at “if your net worth is over $100 million you get to line up against the wall” and need to be negotiated down from there.

  • The most immediately understandable example I heard of this was from a senior developer who pointed out that LLM generated code will build a different code block every time it has to do the same thing. So if that function fails, you have to look at multiple incarnations of the same function, rather than saying “oh, let’s fix that function in the library we built.”
