  • Okay I see this meme a lot, but just curious, is taxis/rideshares in the same situation or not.

I rarely ever need to use those but just curious in case I might need it someday.

  • lol your .ml admins are gonna ban you for "russophobia", maybe switch instances?

  • The bots¹ I noticed are all posts, no comments. Mostly memes, or comics, or YSK, or similar. New account, less than 7 days. Their posts aways get on front page sorted by All/Top-Day.

¹Suspected bots, no clue if they are bots. But given that 90-9-1 rule, comments should be higher than posts imo, like why post stuff if you just never engage in comments, weirdo. 20 posts in political stuff and 0 comments is sus as hell.

Anyways, maybe we need to return to Ham Radios lol. Try botting thats shit.

  • 美國 can be very 美, politics aside

Time Square and the surrounding area is cool, although it make me anxious as fuck since I'm an introvert and because 嗰時咁細個喺外國,英語當時亦唔係幾好, so I kinda have to stay very close to 父母 to feel safe, but its just amazing how so many people can fit in such a tiny island (Manhattan, that is)

唐人街 in 曼克頓 is a reminder that I'm not alone is this place, last I checked, there are 5 Million of us here, it's always a good reality check when faced with the constant news of political problems and the government constantly threatening to deport people.

My mom always said “唔洗怕,如果係排華唔會淨係趕你一個人” (You won't be the only one to be deported, we'd all be together) lmao

I remember 啱啱來到美國嗰時 we'd use the subway a lot, but when we cross from Booklyn, where we lived, to Manhattan, the subway goes above ground to cross the water separating the two 區 on a bridge. That was the coolest scenes, just crossing the bridge, looking outside of the window of the subway. This place is so big.

I remember in 廣州, 住喺嗰啲樓,the apartment unit was 好窄好邋遢

嗰時喺布碌崙租嘅個間單位 (its a townhouse in suburban area, not a apartment building),雖然亦係覺得好窄,但係覺得好似比較新,現代,like... it's just 睇落去好好多,睇落去順眼 know what I mean?

There are just so many cool places like there's 好多公園 and 好多樹 where 廣州到冇咁多 greenery,空氣冇咁好

It really is a beautiful country, but then you have these politicians trying to ruin it... and also um... 你知啦... foreign policy... 👀

  • I assume its because most people use 4 digit pins.

Can they crack a long passphrase?

  • For secnario 2 and 3 I could just say the same sentence 50 times and eventualy i'll get the right language, assuming I go to the countries in of the top most popular languages. For scenario 1 I can use pen and paper.

But what does "know every language" even mean? Like how good are you? Average? Beginner level? College professor level?

I mean maybe I'll take it so I can watch Anime without needing subtitles, but actually I'm not too sure, I heard that to Japanese people, the acting is actually sounds quite "overdramatized" so I'm not sure if knowing Japanese is actually a great idea.

I already know the two most popular languages... so... meh, idk... 🤷‍♂️

  • The Chinese characters for Norway didn't have much of a impression, maybe because I first learned of Norway like very late into teenage years when I already used English as primary language. I already have "they treat prisoners very well" and "social welfare" into my mind, before I looked up the characters for Norway.

  • That its in the middle of the world... which doesn't exactly make sense once I started realizing the fact that the Earth is round, so there is not really a "center" like a hypothetical flat earth would have.

  • Neutral, 以色列 doesn't exactly make me think of anything in particular. I also learned about isrsel in the English language before I looked for the transliterated characters, so maybe that subconcious thing didn't apply.

  • I'm gonna guess that they have WeChat, pro-conservative and anti-democrat articles run rampant in WeChat, I know because my parents constantly spew bullshit and I have to remind them about the Chinese Exclusion Act and that republicans are trying to deport us.

  • Me: "How to commit..."

Google: pLeAsE cAlL 998 iF yOu aRe exPeRiEnCiNg sUiCidAl tHoUgHts!

    "...a crime without getting caught"

Google: Please remain at your location, the police will arrive shortly.

    💀💥🔫👮🚔

  • I'm a native speaker just kinda hanging on to heritage because of the recent developments in ahem US politics and I kinda wanna brush up on it incase I get denaturalized and deported.

Hopefully not, but then again, its also interesting to see that I feel emotionally attached to Chinese languages more than English, even though English is my primary and most fluent language.

Like I listen to 70s/80s/90s Cantonese songs and also have been just going through the top Chinese Music Videos on Youtube, just see if I like any of them.

I recently found this channel called "Namewee" and I scroll through it and found sound quite interesting and kinda political songs, needeless to say, he got banned from mainland China for political reasons.

    Anyways:

I found this TV show called 你的孩子不是你的孩子, and its about ethnic Chinese families and its dysfunctional. Idk why, I learned of this show years ago but never watched it till now, kinda felt the urge to watch it since I also come from as sort of broken family, very relatable.

Just finished the first episode without using any English subtitle, using Chinese subtitles only. I understand 99% of everything.

Idk what my level is, you could teleport me me to Beijing and I could sort of ask my way around to a US Embassy. But I don't think I can actually like hold a conversation too long without feeling like an outcast, since I last had an education in Chinese in 2nd grade... so 2nd grader level I guess? Also I probably don't know all the colloquial sayings.

If you were to ask me to read, say, Three Body Problem in Chinese, omg my head is gonna spin. It doesn't look foreign to me, but my head will spin if I see a entire pages of Chinese, I'm not used to it. I'm basically a 2nd grader in Chinese part of my brain lol.

I know a lemmy.world mod that claims to live in my city, we can verify each other.

/okay just kidding, I'm too depressed and lazy to do this weird meetup thing.

  • I remember during like highschool and middle school, my dad would cook stuff like:

    • Noodles such as 牛肉麵 but sometimes with the beef replaced with 牛肉丸 or sometimes its bacon or sometimes its just 煎蛋 fried eggs, like it'd be mixed up and salted then pan-fried, or sometimes just pan-fried without mixing it, which my dad called 荷包蛋
    • 煎餅

Sometimes they're busy or at work so I had cereal with milk from the refrigerator a few times, those "meals" are kinda sad and lonely tbh, lack the "warmth" of parents caring for you, know what I mean?

Also I saw my older brother drinking straight from the container of milk like a fucking selfish savage (ewww saliva wtf), so from then on, unless its freshly unopened, I sus all of the milk.

    Sometimes its just some snackbars.

Sometimes I'd be late for school and just have no breakfast except like have some snack bars in my bookbag.

In NYC, I remember my dad was much more busyer than in Philly, so I always just had school breakfast. As for when I don't have school and dad wasn't home? Idk don't remember mom making anything that tasted like real food, just cook rice and have a standard breakfast/lunch brunch I think? Or just the 包, simple, its just has to be steamed and its easy.

Before then, in China, no memories of breakfast... wasn't exactly memorable, probably just about the same things.

As for now? Idk sometimes stuff from the nearby Chinese bakery, sometimes, but not often, dimsum stuff from a small nearby restaurant (Dim Sum starts at like 9:30 AM so its more like brunch than breakfast), sometimes just random snacks as breakfast.

Sometimes if there's leftover food from the day before, that. But nowadays we don't do that anymore, kinda germaphobic, don't trust my brother to not tamper with stuff.

  • Lol, it's barely even 8 am and I've kinda just been up at night, and I just ate a bunch of doritos. Didn't even have a "real" breakfast yet...

  • I know right.

I just started listening to music and I started writing my own poems/lyrics and it feels better than anything "therapy" ever did.

  • Casual Conversation @piefed.social

So... my mom said to me that, when I was younger, that I "behaved" more, and is sad that I "don't behave" like I used to as a child... what lmao? Did your parents said that you are being "rebellious"?

Lets talk about curse words. Parents say them all the time, then when their kids emulate them, they go SurprisedPikachuFace.jpg lmfao. Then be like "why are you using such uncivilized speech". lol

    Showerthoughts @lemmy.world

The family name goes first in East Asian names, reflecting the fact that they value family over individual; Whatever the parents' idea of "family" is, triumphs over the children's individuality.

    Mental Health @lemmy.world

I read stories about parents supporting their kids through depression and therapy stuff and I just feel so sad, I don't have anyone to help me navigate through this

Why do some Americans "feel ashamed" for being American even when it's not their fault?

    Casual Conversation @piefed.social

I speak Cantonese at home, but sometimes I just wanna like use English to artificially create "distance", to like make me feel more in control, since I'd be in a realm of language I have more mastery.

    No Stupid Questions @lemmy.world

Do people who have bad relationship with their parents care about "insults" like "I fucked your mom last night"? Or do you just not care?

    Showerthoughts @lemmy.world

Emotional abuse of immigrant children by their immigrant parents probably contributes a lot to to why the kids hate their ancestral language(s).

    Casual Conversation @piefed.social

Are older siblings supposed to protect their younger siblings? Like... as in a natural instinct? Or do they naturally wanna bully the younger sibling? Why was/is my older brother so evil to me?

    Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

Do you feel sad about the fact that you'll probably die within 100 years (or less) and you (well... that's most of us tbh) can't do much to leave a significant positive legacy?
