Etsy to ban sale of most sex toys, explicit content, and more
  • I quite like the Taos, One of my friends has one and it's roomier than most other crossovers in that segment.

  • Ladybird announcement
  • This does seem like a Tobi ideological thing, doesn't it? Ugh.

  • Television just died
  • I'm very late to this discussion, but I've had no TV, only a projector, for about 10 years now. Simply put, the "black" in the image will only be as dark as your room. If there's enough light that your wall/screen is gray, that gray will be the darkest contrast you see. I fully blacked out my projector room (dark walls and ceiling, blackout curtains) and it made a HUGE difference.

  • How To Apply Minimalism To Your Email Inbox?
  • This is very similar to my approach that I've been refining over about 2 years, and especially so in the last year since I switched to Proton Mail (my business plan includes SimpleLogin). I finally achieved "inbox zero" a few weeks ago, which is something I scoffed at for the longest time as being useless and ridiculous, but it's actually quite nice.

  • I wonder what's in it for Shopify. This seems like an odd thing for them to sponsor, or a very expensive FU to Google.

  • (sorry everyone else for going way off topic here)

The Tiguan is indeed nice! It drives pretty well and had enough cargo room to hold a bunch of musical instruments last time I needed to do that. It has gotten expensive, though. For my money I'd either buy a gently used one, or check out the Taos if you don't mind the slightly smaller size.

  • Those without A/C, what are your tips to stay cool during the summer?
  • I'm no thermodynamics expert, but wouldn't this make your house warmer overall, unless the freezer is outside or in a garage/shed?

  • Let's do an experiment
  • Whenever you see anyone urging a certain course of action online, ask yourself who stands to benefit the most. Trans people not voting = transphobes. Climate change denial = fossil fuel companies. It's always the same playbook.

  • How Ukraine shattered Europe's balance of power
  • Good read, but damn the author really has it in for Germany. I think the case against them is greatly overstated.

  • Outrage as China hospital charges patient fee for sitting down on a chair while receiving an intravenous infusion as health authority says fee is in line with regulations
  • Free healthcare and more than a few weeks' maternity leave is capitalism. Communism is when billionaires and private real estate, and the more of those you have, the communismer it is.

  • Outrage as China hospital charges patient fee for sitting down on a chair while receiving an intravenous infusion as health authority says fee is in line with regulations
  • Agreed. I wonder how many of them have actually been to China. I have, and it's almost comically un-communist. Most western democracies have far more robust social supports, and I'd even say it's easier to have a worker-owned business in the west than in China.

  • Etsy to ban sale of most sex toys, explicit content, and more
  • Chinese reselling is the most profitable business model. Etsy is a public company and must choose the most profitable business model.

This is a definition of capitalism contrived by someone looking to dunk on capitalism at any cost. BMW could be "profitable" if they started flooding the market with $20k cars... for a while.

  • Etsy to ban sale of most sex toys, explicit content, and more
  • Yeah, it's turning into Amazon, flooded by resellers of cheap Chinese shit. That does far more harm to the Etsy brand.

  • Pretty fucked unless you're willing to move to a village at least 1 hour's drive from the nearest city of 100k population. A detached house in my neck of the woods is about 400k CAD and up. Rents start at around 1500 for something decent.

Why do you grow mushrooms? What for?

I stumbled upon this community for the first time a few minutes ago. I like gardening and houseplants, but never heard of people recretionally growing mushrooms of the non-magical kind. Is it for food?

www.businessinsider.com Reddit's cofounder said that at first the company felt like 'a homework assignment that got out of hand' rather than a business

Reddit's cofounder Steve Huffman said in its early days he filled up most of the site with content using different accounts until it got more users.

Fifth Order of Angels (1974 radio broadcast)

This was recorded in Cleveland for a radio broadcast; the tape became available as a bootleg and is known as one of the most important ones in the band's history.

It's the first-ever recording of "Fly by Night" and only their third performance with Neil. We can hear snippets of what would later become "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" in the Working Man solo.

A quote from Geddy regarding bootlegs:

    >A lot of people say 'It takes away from record sales' but [...] the fact is that any fan who buys a bootleg is still going to buy your record. So, who is it harming?

USB webcam lagging only in Zoom?

Sorry if this community isn't the right place to ask — I got a USB webcam that works great in Teams, but lags tremendously (3-4 seconds) in Zoom. I doubt the Zoom app is introducing that lag on its own, but how would I troubleshoot this?

This is on EndeavourOS (basically Arch)

Just picked one up. This is the best price I've seen this year. Very strange monitor but awesome for work - it even serves as a USB-C docking station with 90W power delivery.

Why does Pandoc get updated nearly every day?

Please forgive the noobish question, but what's going on with a document converter that it gets such frequent updates (and by extension forces a ton of Haskell updates)?

GNOME Foundation names "professional shaman" as new executive director

Maybe I don't really understand what the Foundation does (or what the ED's role is), but this seems like a very odd choice, even by GNOME standards.

Even back in the Windows 3.1 or 95 days I didn't have to reboot this often - sometimes twice a day. Seems a bit excessive?

File permissions on mounted drive - can read/write but can't drag into apps?

RESOLVED: it was caused by the app being flatpak. use Flatseal!

I have a network drive mounted to my computer (PopOS). I have read & write access to everything in the drive and can drag and drop files between two Nautilus windows, but if I try to drag a file from the network drive into an email for example, I get a popup about file permissions. Is it because flatpak apps don't inherit my user permissions?

Finally using Linux full-time thanks to PopOS

I've been using Linux on and off for about 15 years, but was never able to make the leap to using it full-time until PopOS. It's been painless to use and does everything I need with only minor tweaks. Thank you System76! I can't wait until the Cosmic DE is released.

(too bad about the name, though...)

Using Linux for work - need a good email/contacts/calendar system

(apologies in advance if this isn't the right community for this question)

I've been flirting with Linux on and off for about 15 years and I think I'm ready to make the switch mostly full-time. I use a laptop for work and have a Microsoft 365 plan with email and such. I need to replace that with something Linux-friendly and would much prefer something that works with a desktop email client. Easy syncing of email, contacts and calendar to Android is a must.

Proton seems like it might be a good option but the privacy features aren't a huge selling point for me so I'm open to other options!

Great interview with Alex by Chris Shiflett

    Alternatives to the stock market?

I'm probably preaching against the choir here, but I've become quite disillusioned with the stock market. It seems to no longer have any correlation to reality (assuming it ever did). Other than real estate, what are other good avenues to explore?
