/c/café daily chat thread for 21 October 2023
  • Lol no, I wasn't asking you to look at the timing in the notices, I meant look at which routes aren't affected. Those routes that weren't mentioned meant they were serviced by Brahim's. Yours not being mentioned meant very likely back then it was one of those covered by that contract, and that explained why it sucks.

  • /c/café daily chat thread for 21 October 2023
  • Which route? The ones that're still with full service are apparently the ones that's always been serviced by their in-house catering. The rest all under Brahim's contract which mmg gone downhill

  • A 33mil population is not a small market. Plus if ASEAN could get their act together and negotiate en bloc the way the EU does, you can go a long way in negotiating for more competitive pricing. The one good thing from the Trans Pacific Partnership being blown up by Trump to me in this matter was the fact that US Big Pharma-negotiated clauses with regards to market access got blown up too.

Anwar's populism only sounds nice but it would eventually doom poor people and the working class most of all. Where's the taxation reform? The budgeting reallocation? Why is the conversation not at all considering increasing investment in our healthcare system? We're not poor (yet).

  • Anwar Moots Removing Health Care Subsidies From The Rich, Scrapping Sugar Subsidy To Cut Diabetes - CodeBlue
  • Means-testing on healthcare subsidies is such a regressive idea, not to mention scapegoating rich people for accessing public healthcare in our current healthcare system is close to lying considering:

    • most middle class and above tend to be funnelled into using private healthcare anyway, especially with the way the facilities are all counted as equivalent (per the bancian data) ie a location is considered well-covered even if most of it is private (hospitals/GP clinics/pharmacies), so who exactly is "using" public healthcare even tho rich? Hmmm, let's check on what benefits public servants above certain grades and parliamentarians can access in a public hospital

    • the medication shortage is currently being normatively papered over by accessing private health stocks, which themselves are also capped in price. Who exactly is the rich here, if an uncle is being persuaded to access the nearby private hospital by the klinik kesihatan doctor because the kk doesn't have the appropriate heart medication?

  • Anwar Moots Removing Health Care Subsidies From The Rich, Scrapping Sugar Subsidy To Cut Diabetes - CodeBlue
  • Yep, the actually wealthy have their assets tied up not in personal holdings. By any simple metric that is being thought of, the first impacted are salaried/employed/contracted workers (since taxable income is a usual source of yardstick)

    So here's a thing.

Organised by the International Society for BTS Studies (ISBS) and Universiti Malaya (UM), the upcoming fourth edition conference in 2023 to be hosted by Malaysia is scheduled to be held for the first time in Southeast Asia from 16-17 Aug.

In an interview with Bernama recently, UM's Department of East Asian Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Associate Professor Dr Jimmyn Parc said as this year marks the 40th anniversary of South Korea's inclusion in the Look East Policy (LEP), the conference is dubbed as a vital component of the "New LEP".

Now double check on which instance did this thread originate.

  • KFC Satay Burger is Just Sad
  • "fried chicken sandwich" outside America vs "chicken burger" seems to depend on whether you use a burger bun or not, at least that's my observation. The secondary observation is that for dietary reasons a lot of places don't primarily think of burgers as exclusively beef or pork so the swap/substitution is already well underway for what makes a burger patty/filling.

(ETA: so by the time our English settled on understanding a burger is a sandwich using burger buns, then just about anything in the middle can sub for a meat patty)

(Also, you have to go out more.)

    > From the link: > In Singapore and beyond, there has been a quickening of interest in the anticolonial and socialist struggle of the 50s and 60s after the publications of archival research by historian PJ Thum and of the Eisner-winning graphic novel The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by Sonny Liew, among other works. The undisputed leader of this historical struggle was the student activist, trade unionist, and politician Lim Chin Siong (LCS), who organised the largest social movement in Singapore to fight for democracy, freedom, and justice. Although this movement ultimately failed, it opens a window into an alternative future for Singapore, Malaysia, and the rest of Asia—a window that creative writers with their imaginative powers can help us look at and through. > > --- > > Deadline for submissions is 1 December 2023. There are also introductory material on Lim Chin Siong himself and the historical context he was in. > > Unfortunately their twitter thread about Lim is not mirrored anywhere else, but if you like, here's the thread

People Who Protect - the Menraq Orang Asli Patrol Unit

Interactive piece. Pretty cool. (The Star btw introduced some dumbass jscript -I think - to disable ppl highlighting and copying their text. For reasons of.... Tak nak orang promote their journalism? IDK)

----- Speaking in fluent Malay and throwing in a few English terms, the confident Ardi is among the few older members in the Men-raq team, most of whom are in their 20s.

The team leaders recently won the IUCN WCPA International Ranger Award 2023, the first time that a Malaysian team has won.

The award, which is in its third year running, is held in conjunction with World Ranger Day on July 31. This year, there were 114 nominations from 52 countries. The Menraq received the US$10,000 (RM45,495) award for exemplary achievement in community-led conservation of tigers.

The team’s win, which was announced during an online ceremony on July 26, earned praise from the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, who extended his congratulations and deepest appreciation to every member of the patrol unit.

The award, hosted by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) specialist group, recognises the remarkable work of rangers in protected areas around the world.

The Jahai people, explains Ardi, has lived in Royal Belum for generations.

“And I believe that we should be responsible for the well-being of this forest. No one else should be on the Menraq team but us,” he says.

Ardi hopes that his children as well as those of his community members will carry on the work in the future.

“It is our hope that our children would want to carry the same responsibility as their fathers. Being able to protect this forest is what is in our blood and we are proud of what we are doing,” he says.
