  • At some point we thought the FBI investigations into Trump would actually amount to something. At Comey must have done something right in the process, considering how much Trump hates him. The author of this comic appears to have attempted to date it to July 2018.

Back then there was some hope that federal agencies could actually save democracy. We have since learned that nope, they are indeed only good for suppressing the people, not for defending it.

I guess the joke is that red hair and wine was hopeful the FBI could do good, whereas striped shirt and beer knew there would be little help in fascist superstructures in saving us from fascism.

Not such a great comic I'd say—there's something ironic about painting a strawman of the people you are criticizing for simplified thinking. But I guess they were at least right about the alphabet agencies.

  • I run /e/OS, so I don't completely know about proper Linux as a daily driver on it. Last time I used Ubuntu Touch was before Waydroid (and not on a Fairphone), but back then I found that I was dependent on some Android apps that could not be replaced (WhatsApp & banking).

I guess at least it's not so much work to switch between proper Linux and something like /e/ until you find that Linux is ready for a daily driver. If you're ready to put some time into it at least. :)

  • Yeah, if the battery isn't replaceable I'd consider that a bigger problem than the price.

I'm very happy with my Fairphone - I've been using it for a while now, and it seems they still take software freedom seriously even as their user base grows. They have a problem with understaffed customer support, but in my experience they are very helpful once they do respond.

  • This looks incredible! Can't wait to see/hear the finished thing. :)

  • Move to a different area if your current area it’s not pleasurable to you. Find a higher quality group of friends or become someone that can enjoy their own company. I could keep listening, but I’m not going to make this thread too long.

I guess a lot of people people don't have this opportunity because they need to work boring jobs in order to feed themselves. They should be plotting a revolution, but instead are exhausted by work and get pacified by brainless entertainment the few hours they are not either working or sleeping.

For whoever can afford freedom there's plenty of things to do in the world, yet a bunch of them end up bored anyway. I agree that they could often escape their boredom if they were braver.

  • I guess independent options will always be more expensive than mass-produced trash by tech giants. As far as I understand the FLX1 was pre-made by someone else whereas this is an original device designed to their needs/preferences.

Whether it's worth it is of course an individual calculation. For me the calculation boils down to presumed longevity, repairability, independence from tech giants (including not supporting them financially), and control over software. But of course, there is a trade off - you end up paying extra for something less concrete than processing power and megapixels.

I'm not interested in the Furi Phone as I have a FairPhone that I intend to use for a long time, but it looks interesting. It seems like a mission worth supporting especially considering how degoogled Android is under threat.

(edit: Also, it seems people are not too excited about your þorn project - fuck þat, I þink it rules)

  • I have tried to buy good laptops in the past (ThinkPads) and have been profoundly disappointed, part of the appeal of the Framework for me was that I could choose myself exactly what I wanted from my laptop. And I really couldn't be happier with the hardware - build quality and everything is really great, and a completely different league from machines I have wasted money on in the past even though I tried my best to do my research.

It's possible I should have tried System76 or Tuxedo, but I am really very happy with my Framework. Don't think it makes sense to say it's worse than the competition. But of course, a small company + repairability is reflected in the price.

  • For fucks sake. A big tent is nice and all, but I am not entering any tent that has fucking fascists in it.

Very happy with my Framework 13. I hope I can keep recommending it to people without feeling it's at odds with my values.

It's not like other producers are realistically better, but I kinda expect Framework to be good.

  • Fascinating! Congrats.

In that case your mother and mother in law both sound difficult in their own unique ways. I guess the only advice I have is to make plans for the evening whenever you're invited for dinner to have an escape route 😅

  • I'm European and I only went to the US this year (first and last time), and it's true I was weirded out by the amount of billboards. But still, the same billboard usually stays within your line of vision for a little while.

And if they really count it in such a crazy way by knowing what's in everyones field of vision all the time, that's a crazy approximation from their side.

I think it's likely they instead measure how mamy ads come through the web to your device, which is different from how many you actually see. Like an ad at the bottom of a website you don't scroll through and stuff like that.

  • Yup, the picture dates back to a reddit user three weeks ago who was having a religious ceremony. The user since deleted their account and picture - 700 comments by redditors is no joke - but that's where reverse image search ended up, with an exact match.

  • You could create left wing chat bots to fight against right wing chat bots on capitalist forums, but it seems like a pointless exercise to me, and it just wastes resources and confributes to the dead internet. The venture capitalist logic running it all will kill the platforms soon enough anyway.

I really think social media can only be fixed by doing what we are doing right here - building better alternatives run by the people for the people. All of this technology is still young, we are doing quite alright for its age.

I think we need to fight the fascists as much as possible outside of social media. Community building in the real life in itself fights fascism. On commercial social media platforms we will never achieve anything because they are run by fascists and anything done on them just feeds the machine.

  • Take radio ads - if they last 10 seconds each and you listen to the radio non-stop all day, 2/3rd of the content on the radio would have to be ads. If they play 2 minutes of pop music for every 30 seconds of ads you just can't reach these numbers.

It's true that you can get several ads all at once online, I just still find it hard to believe one could reach 10 000 in a day without basically making an effort. At least in terms of visible ads - trackers is another thing.

But maybe I'm just out of touch. Recently I generally forget to install ad blockers because I have pretty much stopped using the majority of the web.

  • I did the math myself assuming seven hours of sleep and the higher estimate of 10 000 ads - yup, one every 6.12 seconds.

If an add lasts more than six seconds you would start lagging behind. Then again, I guess some people consume multiple adds at once.

With seven hours of sleep and 4000 every day we're down to one ad every 15 seconds. Still seems wild even by American standards.

I suspect Google have been manipulating data in order to convinse buyers of the efficiency of their ad selling business, and this is the result of flipping these data back to society.

  • So she kinda misunderstood the anecdote?

Its not "Bluesky user enters Waffle house, begins talking about pancakes. Waiter starts shouting at him, berating him for talking about anything other than waffles".

It's almost like she read the anecdote and her takeaway was "hell yes I hate pancakes".

Thanks for taking the time to explain me this stuff, I'm usually pretty quick with social cues but this just left me feeling completely dumb.

Edit: I see in your explanation you flipped waffles and pancakes around (why do you hate waffles), maybe she did the same and just decided to stick with it. Or maybe she just had a public meltdown and it doesn't need to make sense, I was just weirded out by how people kinda pretended like it did.

  • Please don't. We'll win out in the long run by building something great, not by being awful. If you want to spend resources they're better spent supporting content creators. :)

  • I guess in a way that's what it offers, just that instead of an algorithm it's human curated. Mastodon is a lot about boosts, so following someone doesn't mean just following them, but also being subjected to whatever they boost (unless you silence their boosts of course). So if you're interested in pottery and you follow a pottery starter pack, chances are that feed will end up a curated channel of pottery content.

The great thing is that it has quality control and cannot be abused the same way algorithmic feeds always end up being. The funky thing is, of course, that you also end up being exposed to everything else those people are interested in. But I think that's part of what makes Mastodon feels so nice.

  • I furthermore doubt they'll create a notification that cannot be disabled. You have pretty good control over that stuff in Mastodon.

  • They're still working on it conceptually - send them an email about it as they suggest! :)
