Ambulance hits cyclist, rushes him to hospital, then sticks him with $1,800 bill
  • I still don't have any clue about what part of my comment you object against, or why you're so fucking negative about it.

All I'm saying is that the right turn accident was completely preventable by making a simple painted line on the tarmac, as it is done in many places where there isn't room for the kind of huge separated bike lanes as shown in your photo.

  • Ambulance hits cyclist, rushes him to hospital, then sticks him with $1,800 bill
  • I'm not sure I get what you're saying, or what I'm missing.

I'm talking about the most basic kind of bike lane, which by all means is just a line on the tarmac. It does however ensure that the bike has a place to be, and that the bike will be visible to the cars, because the bike lane's stopping line is further ahead than that of the cars. I also don't know the exact situation from the article, but if the bike had been at the stopping line in this bike lane, it would never conflict with a right turning ambulance.

    picture of bike lane

  • [image] Who cares? They're only pedestrians.
  • That's a funny childish fantasy and all, but you really shouldn't attempt potential murder over a fucking parking. You know damn well that idiots like this don't check their tires before heading out on the road, so they're going to endanger themselves and others because you tried to make a point or something?

Just leave a note if you want to send a message to them. They're going to be mad about the note, dismiss it and excuse themselves, but... they'll still have to think about it, which is a better result than any potential outcome of secretly destroying their tires, which from their point of view will be completely unrelated to their previous parking.

  • Ambulance hits cyclist, rushes him to hospital, then sticks him with $1,800 bill
  • A bike lane would've helped. If there wasn't one, I can see a good reason for whatever the fuck really happened here.

If there had been a bike lane, he could/would have stayed there behind the stopping line acknowledging the right of the ambulance to go first, but without one...I can see someone in panic trying to get out of the way and then getting run over regardless of where he was positioned.

  • Who stores eggs in the fridge (UK)?
  • It's detachable in my fridge.

I use the egg holder on the door shelf for small bottles that would otherwise fall over when the door is opened. Medicine or nail polish, that sort of thing.

I also the egg holder to .. hold the eggs .. after they're boiled, so I can fill the egg cooker instead of boiling just a few at a time. I use cold boiled eggs for sandwiches or salats.

I do not use it for holding raw eggs as those already come in an egg shaped carton.

  • Calculatable
  • I think this is actually still an issue. On PCs the space bar + up + left arrow keys conflicts on some keyboards. Try it: open Notepad, press two arrow keys and then space. Most of them works but if you hold up and left, it will not make a space.

This is annoying in racing games, when you want to accelerate, turn left and use the hand brake at the same time.

  • Angry crowds confront Spanish king in flood-hit Valencia
  • not sure what a ceremonial rich dude could have done.

This is the kind of situation in which a king (or president) can make a difference.

Royalty don't have any direct power to order people to do things, but they do have a voice with quite a broad reach. Whenever the king speaks, people will hear it. Even if they don't care about the king.

In a time where people are getting their information from sources curated to fit their own political bubble or economical interests, it's quite powerful to be able to reach a whole country across political and economic interests.

Royalties can't dictate, but they can encourage and motivate people to work together on a common goal despite of their differences.

When something is seriously threatening the country, it would be nice if the king would bother making a motivational speech, so that people, companies and politicians could see the purpose of uniting against the common threat.

It might not sway the opinions of people or companies who have strong interests in not doing anything differently, but it will boost the morale of people trying to do their best, enabling them to rest assured that they're doing the right thing despite of what others might do. We could say it's a really vague forn of long term meta-politics, but sometimes that's also all that is needed to set a direction.

It's not political as such, but more like "yo let's save this sinking ship" instead of passivily watching it happen. It won't fix anything by itself, but it's a good start. Without a good start and set direction, you can be sure that nothing will ever change.

That's not a fact. It makes more sense for developing countries to skip directly to renewable energy sources.

  • New York Times tech workers threaten Election Day strike
  • The posted article and me.

I'm a union representative and it bothers me that people always jump to the $$$-question. That's only rarely what strikes are about. Look at the ongoing Tesla strike in Sweden. They were paid over market wages and they still strike, because it's not about pay.

My own contract doesn't even mention pay, except that we have the right to annual negotiation. This right has lead to higher wages than any minimum wage agreement will ever do. We're not here to fight for back pocket scrap metal, we just want a balanced relationship between employees and employers.

This is just difficult to see for anyone who is still working on the employers terms only, or someone who is used to consider jobs "take it or leave it", instead of taking pride in what they do because they want to do the job.

  • New York Times tech workers threaten Election Day strike
  • Ok, let me explain.

Money is probably the least important thing in a union contract. It's always about rights.

Unionizing is the only way to escape the prostitution-like relationship of paid work. Accepting to being paid more is just accepting being a more expensive prostitute. "Here's $100, now you do what the man says... Ok .. $200?"

No, it's never okay. No amount of money can ever make it okay. You should have the rights to choose how and when you do the thing that you're offering as a paid service. That's why you need a clear contract that outlines all of your rights.

In this case it's about termination without cause. As an employee, you'll want a binding contract, so you can plan ahead. Termination without cause is the employers trick to keep you on a one sided contract in which you'll have to dance like a bear in a Russian circus, while the employer has no obligation to keep you fed once the show is over.

The reason they strike is that the employer has already abused this power.

question about online tabs and fonts

How do I best view tabs from pages like ultimate guitar and others on a phone browser, so that the chords and lyrics match up? I know on pc they usually show up fine in notepad or with ASCII fixed sys font, but I can't quite figure out how to set it up for easy browsing on an android phone. I tried copying it to other apps but none of them have a fixed width font.

    How do you do it?

    Denmark - Saba - Sand

Denmark just had the national entry contest today.

The winner was Saba with the song "Sand". Linked in the post.

The top three final also included the 2014 winner Basim with the song "Johnny" and Janus Wiberg from Faroe Islands with the song "I need your love". Both received more audience votes than the winner, but the jury votes had put Saba ahead from the start.

    Nicky Guerrero - hand plant

A local skatepark held an official opening inviting Rune Glifberg and Nicky Guerrero to do a demo. The weather was tricky, but in between rain they managed to pull off a few tricks in the deep end. I didn't get a good photo of Rune.

    Old chest (solved)
imgbox.com imgbox - fast, simple image host

Use imgbox to upload, host and share all your images. It's simple, free and blazing fast!

I am restoring an old chest and while removing a cover under the lid I found this label. As you can see, it's completely undecipherable except for "***halle & co." However there's another label underneath it. I wonder if I can separate them by putting it in water (like stamps off an envelope), but I'm afraid of destroying it if it has any value whatsoever.

The chest is made of wood and metal, but it's in a horrible state. Hinges and screws have been replaced prior to my owning, and the wood is damaged. I plan on restoring it, but would like to know it's history. Judging by materials and the label, I recon this is from 1900-1940s and American.

Optifine won't install on Linux Cinnamon

I'm trying to install Optifine on a Linux Mint Cinnamon laptop. Minecraft Java edition of course.

The game works and has been launched in version 1.20.1, but the Optifine installer keeps saying that I need run version 1.20.1 first.

Also, the installer is already pointing at the correct directory as default, but when I browse the location from the installer, I can't see or set the .minecraft directory manually.

    blur - wembley

Now, I've been to many concerts and even several blur concerts, but this one felt .. special. Even better than the Hyde park concerts 10+ years ago. Anyone else there?

To me it was like watching their proudest achievement and also delivering on it. Maybe I'm just in awe of the brimfull Wembley stadium shouting along on Park Life, but it definitely felt like this was the final grand stadium concert. I've seen Aerosmith, Green Day, Guns'n'Roses and other larger bands on a full arenas before, but those didn't even come close to this. Despite everything being extremely professionally and on time, they managed to break the wall between the stage and the 90000 in audience.

I'm not even a blur fan as such, but I do acknowledge that their contribution to music is way way underappreciated, or maybe it actually isn't?

The warm-ups sucked, but I think those were a local thing, but the main band really came across brilliantly. I dunno..this was beyond just great, and I have no hopes of ever seeing anything this grand again.
