  • As seen from some of the comments here, people like to disparage Australian White Ibises when all they're showing is how adaptable and clever they are. There are so many in human towns and cities because we have taken away a lot of their natural habitats. In regional areas they are sometimes called ‘the farmers’ friend’, due to their habit of flocking into areas afflicted by plagues of locusts and gorging on the insects.

They have really touching courting behaviour. The male secures a pairing territory on a branch of a tall tree to attract a female. The courtship ceremony involves the male putting on a noisy display, as well as showing aggression towards other males. When a female arrives, the male attracts her by bowing from his branch. He then offers the female a twig, forging a bond when she grasps it and they begin to preen one another. Once the pair bond is cemented, the birds fly off to build a nest at another location.

  • Currently, we can only dream of having such cycling systems in place. Canberra comes closest to the Netherlands in having planned-for bike paths in many parts of the city from its early days. In most of our other cities it is difficult to impossible to do because of the road and street design and bike paths can only be developed in small sections of cities. I think you'd find the same problem in many European cities. You are very lucky to have such a practical, and community-minded (and flat) country which is so ideal for cycling.

  • I understand what you're saying but societies have shown that IT IS POSSIBLE to improve the lot of people. The fact that we are going backwards in more and more places in recent times is unacceptable and we must not be fatalistic. There is always action we can take to not descend into dank self-interest. It is possible to improve society and we must be conscious of the forces that seek to divide us and mind control us. Change for the better is always possible.

  • The article also says

Safa’s departure comes amid intensifying West Asia hostilities and includes specific accusations that senior UN leadership is suppressing dissent to serve a "powerful lobby" that he claims is engineering a pro-war sentiment through a systemic misinformation campaign regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

    That is really alarming.

  • I was thinking one of the big welfare charities or even the Australian Food and Grocery Council (Peak body for all the supermarkets) which is all about profits, growth, etc, but reckons it is on about sustainability (LOL) with "efficient management of environmental and social concerns". CHOICE could be worth contacting, perhaps. Even asking your local MP (if you've got someone who cares about people experiencing difficulties in affording daily life) to see if they could connect you with a source of funding. State MPs do offer grants themselves.

Don't mind me, just freewheeling here. I just think your info could be useful to everyday people as well as community workers, and the like, who support people.

  • Thank you for giving these tips. Over the next few months, they will become very valuable to some/a lot of people. I wonder what the other two supermarket chains do that's similar (for people who haven't got an ALDI nearby)? There's an opportunity in putting together some kind of guide for people.

  • What is it with the Vic Govt and defenceless animals? They have culled thousands of wombats and koalas (shooting koalas from helicopters) too. Then there's the duck shooting season. Then there's the kangaroo 'harvesting' (over 100,000 last year). Appalling.

  • I reckon P&C groups should get more political and mobilise parents in their schools to demand proper funding and not just work their butts off trying to raise a few dollars to help out with sports equipment or whatever. Without a well-educated population AND a population who respects and values public education we are just entrenching the class system.

  • Working class people are going through some insane and scary times in your country. I wish for you that you truly become united and change the power structure to real representation and a real government of the people that restores your education, health and other essential services. The Australian working class is not as badly abused as in your country but we're moving in that direction. Stay strong!
