  • How to diversify my feed?

i've noticed that a lot of the content on my lemmy feed seems to be centered around lgbtq+ topics, which I'm not really interested in. i'm not looking to debate or criticize anyone's identity, but I'd like to see a broader range of topics that align more with my preferences. i'm already subscribed to those instances but somehow that sort of content keeps on creeping in.

is lemmy as a platform particularly focused on lgbtq+ or is my feed just skewed for some reason?

are there specific instances or settings I should check out to balance things out. thanks for any advice!

  • i'm tired of seeing this everywhere. this article even fails to call "a new rule" for what it is, namely the VÜPF and VD-ÜPF.

this is a proposition, and hasn't even been voted on yet. in my country, where we had the possibility of joining the EU three times and still with huge majority said no, voted on not getting extra summer holidays and a bunch of other weird and questionable shit - I can say with near certainty that this will not pass. especially not through the ständerat. we are a business focused country which pay for our intelligence from other nations and simply wouldn't even have the capacity to do anything with all this data.

itsFOSS once again writing a short and inconclusive article to gain engagement through absolutely shit reporting. used to be a fan of them, but their quality is going down hill fast. they did a shitpiece on ai browsers for Linux which was the last straw for me. know your audience and stop releasing quantity material over good, well written and researched work.

  • ELI5: What the heck is linux?
  • In summary, Linux is and Operating System that gives you control over your machine - not the other way around coughwindowscough. With that power, however, you can also do a lot more harm to your machine if you don't continuously keep learning and stay curious.

It's high risk, but high reward (especially as a new user). There's something about learning how your computer works (via Linux) that continues to captivate me after many years of use.

  • AI is rotting your brain and making you stupid
  • Certainly! Here's a concise summary of the article "AI is rotting your brain and making you stupid" by Rich Haridy, published on May 25, 2025:

    • AI tools may reduce critical thinking by doing tasks for us.
    • Relying on AI can lead to "cognitive offloading."
    • This may harm creativity and problem-solving skills.
    • The author shares personal concerns from tech use.
    • Suggests using AI mindfully to avoid mental decline.

  • Is there a way to de-google a smart TV?

I have an older Sony TV which has (what I can only guess to be) Google's Android TV app installed on it. I'm sick of getting new recommendations from Amazon and Disney+ and all those services. Is there a way to strip it down bare bones and get everything I need from another app repo - kinda like with Graphene vs Android?

Funny how we see the world in landscape, but live it mostly in portrait.

    Lemmy > Mastodon

I've been giving Mastodon a fair share over the past few months, but even though the user base is significantly larger on that platform than Lemmy, I find the actual user ENGAGEMENT significantly worse. I'll be posting random super interesting shit (according to me at least) and get fuck all as any for of reaction whatsoever, whereas Lemmy and its users actually engage in dope content. Therefore I've come to the clear scientific and educated decision that Lemmy is simply superior. Since it's "AskLemmy" - thoughts?

I am finally 100% open source

Nothing special, just wanted to make a post because I'm extremely proud of myself today. Reddit was the only thing holding me back, and I'm happy to say that I've just deleted my 8 year old account. I'm now only using open source apps for my android and desktop OS and it feels amazing!

What word history origins / facts do you know?

I was on another thread and got deep into learning about the history of certain words and thought I'd post here. What word history origins / facts do you know?

I'll start with two that I recently came across:

    • "‘Wer’ (meaning ‘man’) came from Old High German with the Anglo Saxons 1,500 years ago, and was part of Old English. It then became ‘were’ in Middle English and remains as part of werewolf (‘man wolf’) in modern English." (Source: BillTongg@lemmy.world)

    • "Sculptors in antique Rome could fix mistakes they made by mixing marble dust with wax. If a sculptor was especially gifted and made no mistakes that needed fixing, they would market their art as “sin cera”, which means “without wax”, which is where the word “sincere” comes from." (Source: Pooptimist@lemmy.world)
