  • meanwhile we have to make inferences to the best explanation

This is exactly my point. We don't. We don't need to make inferences beyond how they can be used to help people. We can fairly confidently say that it is harmful and cruel to police gender identity and that affirmation is the best way to handle us. We don't need to bring speculative science into the discussion of how to treat trans people in society, because it just doesn't change much.

Our understanding of ASD and ADHD was changed in my lifetime in a way that has drastically impacted my care. I didn't fit into the old understanding of how it worked because doctors tried to fit me into their limited understanding, ultimately missing how their decisions impacted my life. Their refusal to diagnose me as a kid impacts the services I can receive today, intersecting with socioeconomic factors to limit my treatment based on where I live. Their ideas weren't just theoretical for me, but consequential to my material reality.

I am someone with some experience in psychological research, and one thing people fail to appreciate is how little we actually understand everything. Most psychologists don't even appreciate why or how we can we use our medical model to describe human differences. They don't understand that the way society itself is structured directly determines whether a condition is a disorder. They don't take into account what is necessary to define and what isn't, flopping around in uncertainty in a way that can cause irreparable harm.

My problem isn't with your understanding of gender, but your understanding of psychology. It's fine to think it might work one way or the other, except for the fact that it might actually affect people's lives. When it comes to treatment of trans people, we don't need to make any inferences beyond that we exist and deserve respect. We should be given control of our own bodies and lives; the why is interesting, but not exactly important to that view. How to help people is all our medical model can say about people.

  • Kendrick would probably agree that this changes nothing. He's not a revolutionary, but a humble artist doing what he can. He's not suing the Trump administration (less than a month in) because he's probably looking to fight the battles that matter most to him. He's not a messiah, but who should expect that of him?

I just appreciate that he tried his best to avoid the beef being mutually beneficial for both him and Drake. That's what Drake was expecting, as beefs are usually just a cynical business venture. Instead, he tried his best to do actual damage to Drake, which is seriously refreshing.

  • It's probably because his lyrics are infamously complex and detailed, like poetry that takes time to digest. It also didn't help that he just couldn't say swear words, so what he was saying literally didn't make sense.

The show and lyrics were not very accessible for people who aren't fans of Kendrick, partially because he didn't try to make it accessible. The whole show was intentional minimalistic and counter to the opulent norm of the superbowl. That itself is the statement Kendrick consistently makes as an artist:

Mass appeal is boring, fake, and worthless; be genuine and appeal to those you actually care about. It was a show for the Black community and the people who like his music, and that's a good thing actually.

  • Advertising isn't allllll subconscious, even if mere exposure and priming can be powerful. If ads were all subconscious, they wouldn't try to get your attention and make you actually think about them. On top of that, backfire effects can overwhelm the subconscious approval, as can consciously making note of it.

I actually want to avoid products all together when I see ads. It makes me question whether or not I need it or alternatives, and often times, I decide that I don't. Every ad also represents the entire capitalist system to me. They remind me who the enemy is.

I kinda feel bad for the people who think Trump would only hurt us and not them. At the same time, they'll have a lot of fun harming us.

It's much more likely now that vigilante bigots will feel emboldened, so keep an eye out and never count on anyone to save you. Find allies and avoid being isolated if you live in red country. Groups of fascists will not hold back on killing, and the cops will do more than passively allow it. The danger is very real, and you will not be able to resist multiple people on your own. Fight unfair because they never will. Get every advantage you can.
