Are you better off than you were four years ago? It can be a murky picture for many
  • Yeah, I am, but I don't want to put too much weight on my own experience. I got my PhD last year, so I went from living paycheck to paycheck on a grad student stipend to having a real job making decent money. Many other people are not doing as well as they were, so I don't want my own anecdotal evidence to cloud my perception

  • [ANSWERED: yes they do] Does anyone else find this hard to navigate?
  • I'm a college professor that uses BB and try to make things as easy to access as possible. The same assignments and information can be found in multiple places in the course, i avoid using the jankiest Blackboard applications, I set things up so that text is visible without having to click through another link, etc. But BlackBoard doesn't make it easy. We're switching to Blackboard Ultra this Fall, which I think does have some improvements, especially in the UI department, but I'm doubtful it'll be much better.

  • All humans who have ever lived
  • They're just taking an educated guess. Based on fossil records we've estimated that homo sapiens sapiens emerged about 200k-300k years ago. I'm not sure if they assumed a middle ground estimate of 250k years here, but it was probably something like that. If we're measuring by years, the margin of error is huge, but when we're estimating the total number of people, it doesn't matter that much, because there were so few of us for so long.

  • Who lives in a Pineapple in the Algorithms Library for C? SpongeBob BinaryTreePants!
  • It definitely wouldn't be the left image. With legs like those, you could never pull the pants up past the first (or I guess technically last) level of branching. It would either be the big pants or a large number of seperate, smaller pants on each of the lowest branches.

  • Let's discuss: Stardew Valley
  • To be fair, that's just the culture that's come up around the game. You have to plan how you play if you want to "win" in the first 2 years, but the only thing you get is a few candles lit in your backyard, and you can still "win" in later years if you play more slowly. You absolutely can just plant some stuff around a sprinkler, sleep until they are grown, and do everything you want to do without being at all efficient with it

  • Rockposting
  • Even more accurate is to say that he paid the salaries of a large number of animal "house workers" hence their catchphrase "It's a living!" They all earned their living off of that one guy's income

  • Screw you guys. I cast what I want.
  • You could just get one-star yu-gi-oh card and boom, you've got a 1000/1000 that you can play without tapping anything. Unless your opponent has removal or something, you're winning as soon as it can attack

  • _____ Rule
  • Yeah its a pretty famous demonstration of the fact that we learn grammar seperately from individual words. IE most people add s to the end because thats what we normally do when we have a plural, even though we dont know what a wug is

  • Responsible guidance is a choice
  • Less likely to cause issues, but it might still leave residue on your pipes over time. That said, I also do that. Wipe up what I can with a paper towel, then dilute the rest with hot water and soap

  • Genius or incredibly stupid?
  • I use venmo only sparingly, but whenever I do I take a peek at that page, and see mostly old college friends I no longer talk to paying people I dont know for pizza or rent or whatever. It always feels creepy.

  • In honor of the late William Anders, here's a really great video on the "Earthrise" photo and how improbable it is that we have it at all
  • Basically they weren't originally planning on taking a photo of earth from the moon. The fact that they even had a camera was due to interest from a few astronauts in the earlier missions. The camera had its viewfinder stripped to save weight, so the astronauts couldnt see what they were filming. On that mission they were only planning to take photos of the moon's surface. And then they decided in the moment as the earthrise happened, that it needed to be photographed, and out of tons of shots they only got one clear image.

Maybe a little clickbaity but "It's highly imporbable that they got this shot" doesn't ring the same

  • Free and open-source YouTube clients w/ no ads
  • Well, you still need a client if you're on mobile. I'm not going to watch my video essays through a browser if I can do it through an app. I use libretube which ends up being Piped under the hood, it's just smoother.

I also used to use revanced because it allowed me to keep a few public playlists up to date (something you can only do by interfacing with Youtube). People have their reasons for things.
